If you own more than one S&P 500 ETF, first confirm that each fund tracks the same benchmark and compare its current holdings, costs, and role in your accounts. Funds following the same capitalization-weighted index will generally give you substantial exposure to the same companies; a second fund usually does not add a new asset class. But owning both is not automatically a problem, and there is no universal rule to sell one. The right next step depends on why you hold them, the costs involved, and the consequences of changing your position.
What owning multiple S&P 500 ETFs means
An ETF is an investment wrapper that holds a portfolio of securities. An index ETF aims to track a benchmark, but it may not hold exactly the same investments in exactly the same proportions as that index. The SEC describes an index fund as “a type of mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the returns of a market index” in its Index Funds guidance, dated August 6, 2018.

That distinction matters when you compare funds whose names or descriptions mention the S&P 500. Confirm each fund’s stated benchmark and objective in its current disclosure rather than assuming the names mean the portfolios are identical. A similarly worded or custom benchmark may differ in its rules. Even when two ETFs track the same index, their actual holdings and implementation can differ.

Holding both generally means owning more exposure to many of the same companies, not adding a separate asset class. The exact degree of overlap depends on the specific funds and their current holdings; without a dated comparison of those holdings, an overlap percentage would be misleading.

Review the funds before deciding what to do
Use a side-by-side review, not the ticker symbols or recent returns alone. The comparison should establish what each fund is designed to track, what it currently owns, what it costs, and why it sits in your portfolio.
1. Identify each fund and its benchmark
Write down the ticker, fund name, account where it is held, and the fund’s stated investment objective. Check the current prospectus for the named index and its methodology. Verify that both funds actually track the same benchmark; “S&P 500” in a product description is not a substitute for checking the fund’s own disclosure.
Also note whether the fund says it seeks to replicate or sample its index, if that information is provided. Different implementation choices can affect how closely the fund follows its benchmark. Do not treat a shared index name as proof that every other feature is the same.

2. Compare current holdings and exposure
Look at each fund’s published holdings, using the same or nearby dates where possible. Compare the companies represented and the weight each holding receives. The purpose is to see whether the two ETFs substantially duplicate one another, not to infer a precise overlap figure from their names.
Holdings can change, so use current fund information rather than an old list or a third-party summary with no clear date. If the portfolios are very similar, describe the practical effect accurately: the second fund increases exposure to much of the same basket. It does not, by itself, diversify the portfolio into a different type of investment.
3. Compare costs beyond a headline fee
Check each prospectus expense ratio and any transaction or account-level charges that apply to your situation. The expense ratio is one part of the comparison, not the whole decision. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on mutual fund and ETF fees and expenses explains that fund expenses and other costs can affect an investor’s returns.

The SEC’s conditional guidance is useful: “If the holdings of two funds have identical performance, the fund with the lower cost generally will generate higher returns for you.” That statement assumes identical performance from the holdings; it is not a guarantee that the fund with the lower expense ratio will be the better choice in every circumstance. Compare the actual funds and costs relevant to your account, rather than relying on a general rule.

4. Consider tracking and implementation
A fund’s objective is to follow an index, but its results may differ from the benchmark. Review information about tracking behavior and implementation in the prospectus and latest shareholder report. Sampling, portfolio adjustments, and other implementation differences are reasons to look beyond an expense ratio. Do not assume that a short stretch of better recent performance proves one ETF is the better long-term holding.

5. Establish why you hold both
There may be a practical explanation that has nothing to do with trying to diversify. One position might be a legacy purchase, the result of an account transfer, or held in a different account type. You may also have an operational reason to keep the positions separate. The holdings alone cannot tell you why you bought or retained both, so identify the reason before deciding whether it still matters.
Use this decision framework
| What you find | What it may mean | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Both funds track the same capitalization-weighted S&P 500 index and have very similar current holdings. | You likely have substantial overlap rather than two distinct sources of broad diversification. | Compare costs, tracking behavior, account location, and the reason for holding both before considering a change. |
| The benchmark names or methodologies differ. | The funds may not provide identical exposure, even if their descriptions sound similar. | Read both current prospectuses and compare the published holdings and objectives. |
| One position has a specific account or operational purpose. | Keeping both may make sense for that purpose, even if their equity exposure overlaps. | Decide whether the purpose is still useful and weigh it against the costs and consequences of changing the position. |
| You cannot establish a meaningful difference or reason for the second fund. | The extra holding may simply be an unintentional duplicate, but that alone does not determine whether to sell it. | Review fees, transaction costs, account-specific consequences, and your broader plan before acting. |
This framework identifies questions to answer; it is not a ranking of any particular ETFs. No tickers or account details are specified here, so there is no basis to calculate a current overlap percentage, name a fund to keep, or make an individualized recommendation.
What to consider before selling or consolidating
Do not turn “these funds overlap” into an automatic sell order. First establish which account holds the shares and what could happen if you sell or move them. Tax consequences and transaction costs depend on your jurisdiction and individual circumstances. The SEC materials cited here do not determine your personal tax outcome.

- Account context: Identify the account holding each position and check the rules or costs that apply to that account before making a change.
- Tax consequences: Ask a qualified tax professional if you need advice about the effect of selling in your jurisdiction or circumstances. Do not assume that two holdings can be consolidated without tax implications.
- Transaction costs: Check for any applicable account-level transaction fees and other costs of changing the position. A lower fund expense ratio does not automatically make a sale worthwhile if changing the holding brings costs that outweigh the benefit.
- Your plan: Consider whether keeping both serves a deliberate purpose and whether any change would fit your investment plan. The fact that funds overlap does not, by itself, establish what allocation is appropriate for you.
If you decide to consolidate after reviewing those issues, make the decision fund by fund and account by account. The objective is not to minimize the number of tickers at any cost; it is to understand what you own and whether each position still has a reason to be there.
Where to verify the details
Use primary fund documents because a fund’s objective, holdings, expenses, or implementation details can change. The prospectus describes the fund’s objective, benchmark, and costs; the latest shareholder report provides additional fund information. Check the current holdings directly through the fund sponsor as well, and note the date of any holdings file you use.
The SEC’s Updated Investor Bulletin: Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), dated February 23, 2023, provides general ETF information. Pair it with the current documents for the specific funds you own; general investor guidance cannot establish whether two particular ETFs are equivalent or which one suits your circumstances.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting two similar ETFs as two kinds of diversification. If both track the same capitalization-weighted index, the portfolios are likely to expose you to many of the same companies.
- Assuming identical exposure from similar names. Verify the benchmark methodology and actual holdings in current fund disclosures.
- Using an undated overlap estimate. Holdings change, and an overlap figure is meaningful only when it is calculated from the specific funds’ holdings for a stated date.
- Choosing solely by recent performance. Compare the benchmark, costs, tracking behavior, implementation, and reason for holding each fund; recent returns alone do not resolve those questions.
- Selling solely to simplify. Account, tax, and transaction consequences may matter. Investigate them before changing a position.
- Treating a lower expense ratio as a complete verdict. Costs matter, but the SEC’s lower-cost guidance is conditional on identical holdings performance, and other implementation and account factors may be relevant.
The practical outcome is a documented comparison: what each ETF tracks, what it currently holds, what it costs, how it follows its benchmark, and why you own it. Once those facts are clear, you can decide whether both positions still serve a purpose without mistaking duplication for diversification or assuming consolidation is always beneficial.
