If the contribution was deductible for that tax year, the usual fix is an amended federal return on Form 1040-X, filed for that year only. The IRS says Form 1040-X is the form used to correct a federal Form 1040-series return that has already been filed. If the correction also changes how a traditional IRA contribution is treated (deductible or nondeductible), you may also need to revise Form 8606 and file it with the amendment.
Before you prepare anything, two questions decide the outcome: whether that contribution could have been deducted in that year, and whether you are still within the time limit to claim a refund.
Step 1: Confirm the contribution was deductible
Only traditional IRA contributions can produce a deduction. Roth IRA contributions are never deductible, so a missed Roth contribution is not a tax-return error and does not need an amendment. For a traditional IRA, the deduction depends on your filing status, your income for the year, and whether you or your spouse were covered by a workplace retirement plan during that year.
| Situation for the tax year | Deduction treatment |
|---|---|
| Roth IRA contribution | Not deductible under any circumstances |
| Traditional IRA, you are not covered by a workplace plan (and your spouse, if married, is not either) | Generally deductible up to the annual limit, regardless of income |
| Traditional IRA, you are covered by a workplace plan | Full, partial, or no deduction, depending on modified adjusted gross income and filing status; the phase-out ranges are set each year |
| Traditional IRA, your spouse is covered by a workplace plan but you are not | Deduction phase-out applies to the married couple’s income under rules that differ from your own coverage; check the year’s Publication 590-A table |
The IRS deduction-limits page and Publication 590-A contain the phase-out tables for each year. Use the table for the year you are amending, not the most recent one you can find. The IRS publication available at the time this article was prepared is the 2025 revision, while the deduction-limits page displayed 2024 and 2023 tables, so confirm the revision that matches your return. The annual contribution limit is a separate figure. For 2024, the IRS lists $7,000, or $8,000 if you were age 50 or older at year-end, in Publication 590-A (2025). That is the most you can contribute, not the most you can deduct.
Step 2: Check the deadline before you start
Form 1040-X generally must be filed within three years after you filed the original return or within two years after you paid the tax, whichever is later. The IRS Instructions for Form 1040-X (revision dated December 2025) state this general rule, and a separate lookback rule can limit how much of a refund you actually receive. A return filed early is generally treated as filed on its due date for this purpose, so check your original filing date against the due date too. If the window has closed, the deduction cannot be claimed through an amended return, and you should get advice on your options rather than assume a refund is available.
Step 3: Prepare the amended return
Follow the IRS instructions for Form 1040-X, which direct you to show the original amounts, the changes, and the corrected amounts, and to attach any schedules or forms that support the change. The general process looks like this:

- Gather the original return and your records. Keep the Form 1040, its schedules, and your Form 5498 and contribution confirmations for the year.
- Find the deduction line. The traditional IRA deduction is reported as an adjustment to income on Schedule 1 (Form 1040). Compare that line with what should have been reported.
- Recalculate the tax. A higher adjustment lowers adjusted gross income, which can change taxable income, credits that phase out with income, and the resulting tax or refund.
- Complete Form 1040-X for that year only. Use a separate Form 1040-X for each tax year you are amending. Enter the original figures, the net change, and the corrected figures.
- Attach the revised schedules and any Form 8606. Mail the package to the address listed in the Form 1040-X instructions for your state of residence, since e-filing support for amended returns depends on the year and software.
- Keep complete copies. Retain the original return, the amended return, the attachments, and the contribution records.
Step 4: Decide whether Form 8606 must change
Form 8606 tracks nondeductible traditional IRA contributions, known as basis. The IRS Instructions for Form 8606 (2025) state that after you file your return you can generally change a nondeductible contribution to a deductible one, or the reverse, if you make the change within the time limit for filing Form 1040-X. A corrected Form 8606 may be required in that case.
Two practical points follow. First, if the contribution was nondeductible and you claim it as deductible, your basis changes, which affects how future distributions are taxed. Second, if you already filed a Form 8606 reporting the contribution as nondeductible, the amendment should reflect that same change so your records stay consistent. Confirm the current form instructions for the year before filing, because the required entries can differ by year.

Refund amount and the lookback rule
A missed deduction usually produces a refund only if your tax is actually reduced. In some years, the deduction might lower your tax to zero without creating a refund larger than what you already paid, and in other cases the change may only reduce a balance due. The lookback rule in the Form 1040-X instructions can also limit the amount refundable when the claim is filed late. Work through the numbers on the amended return before you assume a specific refund figure.

Forgetting to deduct a contribution is a reporting issue on the return. It does not mean you should withdraw money from the IRA. Withdrawing funds can create taxable income and possible penalties, and it is not the correction for an unclaimed deduction.

A separate question arises if the contribution itself was not allowed, for example because it exceeded the annual limit, or because the contribution was made after a time when you were ineligible under the rules for that year. Those cases involve excess-contribution rules in Publication 590-A, and they are handled differently from a simple missed deduction. Review that publication or consult a qualified tax professional before taking any corrective step.
State returns
This guidance covers federal IRS rules only. Many states have their own rules for IRA deductions, amended returns, and deadlines. If you amend a federal return, check your state tax agency for a separate amended state return requirement, because a federal change can flow through to state taxable income.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim a missed IRA deduction without filing an amended return?
Generally no. Once the original return is filed, the change is made on Form 1040-X for that tax year, with a corrected Form 8606 if the contribution’s deductible or nondeductible treatment changes.
Do I need software or a tax professional to amend?
Neither is required by the IRS instructions cited here. Software or a qualified tax professional may help with calculations and supporting schedules, but you can prepare the amendment yourself using the IRS forms and instructions.
The Bottom Line
If you forgot to deduct a traditional IRA contribution, confirm that it was deductible for that tax year, confirm you are still inside the Form 1040-X window, then file a separate amended return for that year with any corrected Form 8606. Roth contributions do not need an amendment, and a missed deduction is not a reason to withdraw money.
