What to Do If You Followed Incorrect AI Mortgage Advice

If AI mortgage guidance led you to change a payment, miss a deadline, or dispute an account entry, verify what happened and take the next step through the right institution.

If you acted on AI-generated mortgage guidance and now think it was wrong, first establish exactly what you were told, what you did, and what account, payment, credit report, or deadline may be affected. Compare the advice with your signed loan documents and current account records, then contact the institution responsible for the issue. The AI’s answer alone does not establish that a lender or servicer made an error or that you are entitled to a particular remedy.

Start by identifying the action and the risk

Do not make a second mortgage decision based on another general AI answer. An incorrect instruction can have very different consequences depending on whether you changed a payment, missed a deadline, signed a document, delayed an application, or shared account information. The first task is to separate what the AI said from what actually happened afterward.

Make a short event record

  • Save the AI conversation, including the date, the exact question you asked, and the answer you followed. If the service may delete conversation history, make a copy now.
  • Write down what you did in response, when you did it, and who received any payment, document, or information.
  • Identify the affected loan and the next relevant date: a payment due date, application deadline, response deadline, credit-report update, foreclosure date, or other date stated in a notice.
  • Gather the signed promissory note and mortgage or deed of trust, current statement, payment confirmations, account history, lender or servicer letters, and any application or document involved.

Use the signed loan documents and current records to check the advice. Keep originals and make copies of records you send. If the account history or terms are unclear, ask the servicer to explain the specific entry or provision rather than assuming either that the AI was right or that it was wrong.

Choose the next step based on what you did

The appropriate contact depends on the consequence. A servicing or payment discrepancy belongs with the mortgage servicer; an inaccurate credit entry requires a dispute; a missed payment calls for immediate loss-mitigation contact; and a legal deadline or foreclosure proceeding may require an attorney. If more than one issue applies, handle the most time-sensitive one first.

What happened First contact or action Why it matters
Payment was skipped, changed, or sent incorrectly Call the servicer using the phone number on your current mortgage statement Confirm how the payment was credited and whether the account is past due.
Account history, fees, balance, or servicing appears wrong Ask the servicer to explain the entry; consider a written notice of error or request for information A written notice sent to the designated address can trigger formal response protections.
You cannot make an upcoming payment or are already behind Contact the servicer promptly and a HUD-approved housing counseling agency Options depend on your situation, and waiting can narrow the time available to address it.
Mortgage information on a credit report is inaccurate Dispute with both the credit reporting company and the company that furnished the information Both channels matter for correcting a reported error.
You received legal papers or a foreclosure sale may be near Promptly contact an attorney qualified in your state A complaint to a regulator does not itself pause a court case or sale.

Contact the servicer about a payment or account problem

For a problem with the mortgage account or servicing, call the number printed on the current statement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says: “If you think your mortgage servicer has made an error or you need information about your mortgage loan, you can call or write a letter to your servicer.” Explain the transaction or entry at issue in concrete terms: for example, the payment date and amount, the way it was credited, or the balance or fee you cannot reconcile.

Make the call useful and traceable

  1. Have the loan number, statement, payment confirmation, and relevant correspondence available. Do not share passwords or one-time authentication codes in response to an unsolicited message.
  2. State what you believe is inaccurate, what records you are relying on, and what you want the servicer to explain or correct.
  3. Record the call date, the representative’s name or identifier, any reference number, and the response or next step promised. Note when the servicer says it will follow up.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, follow up in writing. Keep a copy of the letter and evidence, and use a trackable delivery method if appropriate.

A phone conversation can help clarify the account, but it may not provide the same formal protections as a properly submitted written notice. If a payment problem remains disputed, do not rely only on a call log as a substitute for the servicer’s formal error-resolution process.

Send a formal notice when you believe servicing is wrong

For a suspected servicing error or a need for loan information, you can send the servicer a notice of error or request for information. Use the servicer’s designated address for these notices; it may be different from the address where you mail payments. Check the current statement or the servicer’s official instructions for that address and required details. Do not put the notice on a payment coupon.

What to include

  • Your name, property address, and enough loan information for the servicer to identify the account.
  • A clear description of the suspected error or the specific information requested. Include relevant dates and amounts where they help identify the issue.
  • Copies—not originals—of supporting documents such as a statement, payment confirmation, or prior correspondence.
  • A request for the explanation or correction you are seeking, plus your current contact information.

Keep a copy of everything sent and a record of when and how it was delivered. CFPB guidance describes a general five-day acknowledgement period and a generally applicable 30-day response period, excluding weekends and legal public holidays. Exceptions, extensions, and special rules apply, including for certain foreclosure-related errors and payoff-balance requests. These general timeframes are not a guarantee that every type of request follows the same schedule; check the current CFPB guidance and seek individual advice if a deadline is urgent.

Continue making scheduled payments while waiting for the response unless qualified, loan-specific advice tells you otherwise. A notice does not by itself change the payment terms or erase an amount due. A borrower who is uncertain how to handle a disputed amount should ask the servicer and an appropriate housing counselor or attorney rather than relying on an AI-generated instruction.

If the advice led you to miss or change a payment

If you cannot make a payment, expect to miss one, or are already behind, contact the servicer right away. Ask what options may fit your circumstances and what documents it needs to evaluate them. Do not assume that ignoring calls, waiting for a credit report, or continuing to ask AI will preserve your choices.

A HUD-approved housing counseling agency can help you understand the process and work with the mortgage company. CFPB guidance reviewed August 28, 2026, recommends preparing information about why payment is difficult, whether the problem is temporary or permanent, income, expenses, assets, and any relevant military relocation orders. A counselor can help organize that information; the servicer determines what it needs for a particular review.

If you already sent a payment to the wrong place or changed how it was made, tell the servicer exactly what happened and provide the confirmation or transfer records. Ask how the payment was applied and what is currently due. Do not treat a chatbot’s statement about grace periods, late fees, forbearance, or automatic payment pauses as authoritative unless it matches your loan documents and the servicer’s written terms.

Dispute mortgage information that is wrong on a credit report

Check whether the mortgage information has actually appeared on your credit report and whether it is inaccurate. If it is, dispute it with both the credit reporting company displaying the error and the company that supplied the information, such as the servicer. Include the specific account entry you challenge, why it is wrong, and copies of supporting records. Keep the submission and delivery records.

CFPB says a furnisher generally must investigate and respond within 30 days. For a mortgage-payment error reported to the servicer, CFPB also says negative information about that payment cannot be sent to a credit reporting company during the 60 days after the servicer receives the notice of error. This is a limited protection tied to a notice of error about a mortgage payment; it is not a promise that every credit entry will be removed, that other reporting stops, or that a payment may be withheld. Follow the dispute process and continue to monitor the report for the result.

If you signed, sent, or shared something

If the AI advised you to sign or submit a document, first identify what it was, who received it, and whether it changed an application, loan term, or obligation. Compare the signed copy with the documents you were given and ask the lender or servicer to confirm receipt and explain the document’s status. Do not assume a signed document can be canceled simply because the advice that led to it was inaccurate; the effect depends on the document, timing, loan terms, and applicable law.

If you delayed a mortgage application or missed a submission date, contact the lender or broker handling the application immediately. Ask whether the application remains open, what is missing, and whether any deadline can still be met. Preserve the AI answer and the communications showing the date and status. The CFPB sources summarized here do not establish a universal right to reopen an application or extend a lender’s deadline.

If you shared sensitive account or identity information, contact the institution through the number on a statement or its official correspondence to ask what protective steps are appropriate for your account. Do not use a phone number or link supplied in an unexpected message as the only way to verify who is contacting you.

Escalate when the issue remains unresolved or time is short

If a mortgage problem remains unresolved after contacting the servicer, you may submit a complaint to the CFPB. Include a concise timeline and relevant copies so the issue is understandable. A complaint can raise the problem with the company, but it does not itself stop or delay foreclosure, replace a court response, or extend a deadline.

If you have been served legal papers, received a foreclosure notice, or believe a sale may be imminent, promptly seek an attorney qualified in the state where the property is located. State law, the type of loan, the dates, the signed terms, and the stage of a foreclosure can change what options are available. Do not wait for a regulator complaint or a general AI answer before getting advice on a live legal deadline.

HUD-approved counseling is a relevant support path for borrowers working through payment trouble. CFPB warns borrowers to avoid companies that demand advance payment or guarantee they can stop foreclosure. A guarantee of a specific outcome is not a substitute for reviewing your loan and legal situation.

Keep a clean record of what happens next

Maintain one paper or digital folder for the mortgage statement, signed loan papers, AI exchange, payment records, notices sent, delivery receipts, credit disputes, and responses. A simple chronology can help you or a counselor, attorney, servicer, or regulator see the sequence without reconstructing it from memory.

  • Log each contact with date, channel, organization, person or reference number, and outcome.
  • Save complete copies of anything submitted, including attachments and any confirmation of receipt.
  • Track stated response dates and all payment, application, court, or sale deadlines separately.
  • When a representative gives an important instruction by phone, ask for written confirmation and compare it with the loan documents.

These records help establish what was said and done, but they do not decide whether the advice was legally or financially incorrect. That conclusion requires the underlying account facts and, where rights or deadlines are at stake, advice from a qualified professional in the relevant state.
