That is a broad planning guideline—not a legal requirement, a 401(k)-only rule, or a personalized recommendation. Your appropriate rate depends on when you started saving, when you expect to retire, other income such as a pension, and the spending level you want in retirement.
What percentage should you contribute?
Use a percentage of gross, or pretax, pay rather than a fixed dollar amount. A percentage automatically rises when your income rises and makes it easier to compare your saving with employer contributions and other retirement accounts.

Fidelity’s general planning guideline is to work toward 15% of pretax income annually for retirement, including your own workplace-plan contributions and employer contributions. The figure is a broad benchmark from a financial-services provider. It is not an IRS requirement and does not mean every worker should put 15% into a 401(k) alone.

The 15% target can be too high for someone handling essential debt or a very recent emergency, and too low for someone starting late, retiring early, lacking other income, or expecting unusually high retirement spending. Conversely, a pension, rental income, or other reliable retirement income may reduce the amount that must come from personal accounts. Treat the benchmark as a direction for planning, then test it against your own retirement date, savings history, and expected expenses.

How your age changes the decision
Age does not produce a single required contribution percentage. It changes the number of years your contributions can compound and the time available to correct a shortfall. The practical question at each stage is how to capture available plan benefits, build the savings rate gradually, and check whether your accumulated balance is keeping pace with your intended retirement.
| Career stage | Primary contribution decision | Progress check |
|---|---|---|
| Early career | Start with an amount your budget can sustain, then increase it as pay rises. If the plan matches contributions, work toward the rate that receives the full match. | Confirm that saving has begun, the full match is being captured when available, and automatic increases are scheduled if your plan permits them. |
| Mid-career | Compare your total retirement saving—employee contributions, employer money, and IRA saving—with the broad 15% guideline. Increase gradually if a large one-time jump would strain cash flow. | Compare your account balance with the age-based salary milestones and reassess the intended retirement age. |
| Age 50 and older | Review whether the plan permits catch-up contributions and whether a savings gap warrants a higher rate. | Check the applicable annual employee limit, catch-up limit, plan terms, and any Roth catch-up rule that applies to higher-paid participants. |
| Ages 60–63 in 2026 | If eligible and the plan offers it, use the larger age-specific catch-up opportunity instead of assuming the ordinary age-50 catch-up applies. | Verify the year you turn each age, payroll implementation, and the plan’s adoption of the relevant provision. |
Early career: secure the match before optimizing everything else
Starting early gives contributions more time to compound, so a sustainable first contribution is more valuable than waiting for an ideal income or budget. Begin with a rate you can maintain while covering essential expenses, then raise it after a pay increase, debt payoff, or other budget change.
Your first checkpoint is the employer match. If the plan offers matching contributions, contribute enough to receive the full match whenever your cash flow allows. Read the plan’s formula carefully: a match may be calculated per paycheck or annually, and the percentage needed to obtain the maximum can differ by plan.

Mid-career: measure the whole retirement system
In your 30s and 40s, look beyond the payroll percentage shown on your 401(k) election. Compare that total with the 15% planning guideline, while recognizing that the guideline includes employer money.

If your total is below the benchmark or your balance is behind the milestones, a series of modest increases can be more workable than a single large reduction in take-home pay. For example, you might raise the contribution after each annual pay review and direct part of future raises to the plan. This is a budgeting approach, not a promise that a specific increase will produce a particular investment result.
Also revisit your intended retirement age. Someone planning to stop working before 67 generally has fewer saving years and may need a different rate from someone planning to work longer. A pension or other dependable income can change the amount that must be accumulated in investment accounts.

Once you are eligible, check whether your plan accepts catch-up deferrals and whether your household’s savings gap makes them appropriate. The IRS allows eligible participants to make catch-up contributions within statutory and plan limits, but payroll systems and plan documents determine how you actually elect them.
Catch-up contributions are an opportunity, not an instruction to sacrifice emergency reserves or high-priority debt payments. If you can afford them, they can increase the amount saved during the years when retirement is closer and the remaining time to accumulate assets is shorter.
2026 401(k) employee limits
For 2026, the IRS announced a standard employee elective-deferral limit of $24,500 for most 401(k) plans. Eligible participants age 50 or older generally have an additional $8,000 catch-up limit, allowing up to $32,500 in employee deferrals when the plan permits the catch-up.

A special higher catch-up applies to participants who turn 60, 61, 62, or 63 during 2026. Their catch-up limit may be $11,250 instead of $8,000, subject to eligibility and plan terms. The maximum employee deferral in that circumstance can therefore be $35,750 ($24,500 plus $11,250), assuming the plan offers the provision and the participant satisfies the rules.
| Participant situation in 2026 | Standard employee deferral | Additional catch-up | Potential employee total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most eligible employees | $24,500 | None | $24,500 |
| Eligible participant age 50 or older | $24,500 | $8,000 | $32,500 |
| Participant who turns 60–63 in 2026 | $24,500 | $11,250 | $35,750 |
These are employee elective-deferral figures, not a guarantee that your plan accepts every amount. Your plan may impose operational limits, and total-plan limits can involve employer contributions as well. Confirm the current limit, eligibility, and payroll treatment with your plan administrator before changing elections.
The 2026 Roth catch-up rule for certain higher-paid participants
Beginning in 2026, certain participants whose wages from the plan sponsor exceeded $150,000 in the applicable prior year must make catch-up contributions on a Roth basis when the plan offers the required Roth feature. This is not a rule for every employee age 50 or older. Whether it applies depends on the specified wage year, the participant’s status, and the plan’s Roth capability.
Ask payroll or the plan administrator which prior-year wages they use, how the $150,000 threshold is applied, and whether the plan has implemented the required Roth option. Do not assume that an ordinary pretax catch-up election will remain available to a participant covered by this rule.
Use salary milestones as a progress check—not a contribution formula
Fidelity’s age-based milestones are expressed as accumulated savings relative to salary: about six times annual salary by age 50, eight times by age 60, and 10 times by age 67, assuming retirement at 67. These are rough balance targets, not required contribution percentages for a particular year.

| Age milestone | Illustrative accumulated-savings target | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 6× annual salary | Assess whether your balance is broadly on track, then investigate the reasons for any gap rather than changing the payroll rate blindly. |
| 60 | 8× annual salary | Recheck retirement timing, expected spending, other income, and catch-up eligibility. |
| 67 | 10× annual salary, assuming retirement at 67 | Use the milestone only under the stated retirement-age assumption; a different retirement date changes the planning question. |
A salary multiple can move even when you make no contribution: a promotion raises the denominator, while investment gains or losses change the balance. The milestones also do not account for every household’s pension, Social Security claiming strategy, debt, health costs, or desired lifestyle. Use them to prompt a fuller review, not as a pass-or-fail test.
How to choose your rate in practice
- Write down your gross annual pay. Use the compensation figure to which your payroll contribution percentage applies, and check whether bonuses or irregular pay are treated differently by the plan.
- Record your current employee rate. Separate pretax and Roth 401(k) elections if your plan offers both, and note whether automatic escalation is enabled.
- Add employer contributions. Convert the match formula into an annual percentage of pay and identify any employer contribution that is not immediately vested.
- Add other retirement saving. Include IRA contributions and other dedicated retirement deposits when comparing your household total with the 15% guideline.
- Check your age milestone. Compare your retirement-account balance with the six-times-at-50, eight-times-at-60, and 10-times-at-67 reference points, using the retirement-age assumption that actually fits your plan.
- Set the next affordable increase. If you are below your desired total, choose a step that fits your budget and schedule a review after a raise, annual enrollment, or debt payoff.
- Verify statutory and plan limits. For 2026, check the $24,500 standard limit and the applicable catch-up amount, along with the plan’s own eligibility, Roth, and payroll rules.
- Reassess when facts change. A new job, a change in match, a planned early retirement, a pension decision, or a major spending change can justify a new rate.
Employer matching: the first checkpoint, not the whole plan
Capturing the full available match is often the most immediate improvement because it adds employer money to your retirement saving. Fidelity reported that 81.2% of its 401(k) participants saved enough to receive the full employer match in the second quarter of 2026. That statistic describes Fidelity’s plan participants, not all U.S. workers, and it is not a recommended contribution rate.
Check four details in your own plan:
- Formula: Determine how much you must contribute to receive the maximum match.
- Timing: Find out whether the match is calculated each paycheck or reconciled annually.
- Vesting: Confirm when employer contributions become fully yours.
- Eligibility: Check service, hours, employment-status, and enrollment requirements.
A match does not make a low personal rate automatically sufficient. Once the full match is captured, compare your combined employee and employer saving with your broader retirement objective.
What current participant data can—and cannot—tell you
Fidelity reported an average 401(k) savings rate of 14.4% in the second quarter of 2026. The total consisted of a 9.6% average employee contribution rate and a 4.8% average employer contribution. These figures describe Fidelity’s participating plans and are useful context, but they are not a target for an individual and do not predict your account outcome.

When the 15% guideline needs adjustment
You started saving late
A later start leaves fewer years for compounding. Compare your balance with the relevant milestone and consider a gradual increase, catch-up contributions when eligible, or a later retirement date. The correct response depends on how large the gap is and how much of your desired retirement income must come from investments.
You plan to retire before 67
The 10-times-by-67 milestone assumes retirement at 67. Retiring earlier can require more assets, a bridge to other benefits, or a different withdrawal plan. Recalculate the target around your actual date rather than treating the age-67 figure as universal.

You have a pension or other reliable income
Other income can reduce the portfolio amount needed to cover retirement spending. Include the expected income, its start date, and its reliability when deciding whether the broad 15% benchmark fits your household.
Your budget cannot support a large increase
Do not abandon saving because you cannot reach a benchmark immediately. Capture the full match if possible, choose a sustainable rate, and direct part of future raises or completed debt payments to the plan. Revisit the decision on a defined schedule rather than relying on willpower.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating 15% as a law: It is a broad provider benchmark that includes employer contributions.
- Confusing balance targets with annual rates: Six, eight, and 10 times salary are accumulated-savings milestones, not age-specific payroll percentages.
- Ignoring the match formula: A contribution rate below the required threshold can leave employer money unclaimed.
- Overlooking vesting: An employer contribution may not be fully owned until service requirements are met.
- Using the wrong limit: The 2026 age-50 catch-up and the larger age-60–63 catch-up are different provisions.
- Assuming the Roth catch-up rule applies to everyone: The 2026 requirement is tied to specified prior-year wages, age-based catch-up eligibility, and plan features.
- Copying an average participant: Fidelity’s reported rates describe its own participants, not your household’s needs.
A practical verdict
Start by contributing enough to receive your full employer match, then work toward a total retirement-saving rate near 15% of pretax income, counting employer contributions and other retirement accounts. Use the salary milestones—six times pay by 50, eight times by 60, and 10 times by 67—as rough progress checks rather than instructions for this year’s payroll election. If you are 50 or older, review catch-up availability; if you turn 60–63 in 2026, check the higher limit. Finally, adjust for your actual retirement date, other income, savings history, and expected spending. Those factors determine whether a general benchmark is conservative, aggressive, or about right for you.
