A student loan denial or a loan that falls short does not automatically mean you cannot attend college. Contact your school’s financial aid office to find out what aid or review options remain, then ask the billing office about payment timing and ways to lower the bill. Your next steps depend on the loan type, the reason for the denial, your school’s policies, and the academic year.
Start by identifying the shortfall
Review your financial aid offer and FAFSA account. Write down which loan was denied or how much is missing, the school bill’s due date, and any documents or tasks still outstanding. FAFSA is free and is used to assess eligibility for grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans; states and colleges also use its information when awarding aid. Ask the lender or school for the denial reason in writing. A PLUS adverse-credit decision, a private lender’s underwriting decision, and a loss of federal aid eligibility are different problems, with different review routes.
Contact the school before the bill is due
Ask financial aid about remaining options
Call or message the financial aid office promptly. Ask whether your offer can be reviewed and whether institutional scholarships, state funds, emergency assistance, or other aid may still be available. If your family’s finances have changed since the information on the FAFSA was reported, explain the change and ask what documentation the school needs for an aid adjustment. A school may use professional judgment to adjust aid in appropriate circumstances, but the school makes that decision; the Department of Education does not hear an appeal of the school’s decision. Ask billing about timing and the cost of attendance
Contact the bursar or billing office separately. Ask whether the school offers a tuition payment plan, what fees and due dates apply, and what happens if an installment is late. Also ask whether changing housing, meal arrangements, or course load could reduce your costs. Confirm any enrollment consequences directly with the school rather than assuming that a payment arrangement protects your registration.
Check deadlines and application status
Check your FAFSA status through your student account and ask the school whether it needs additional documents. Deadlines vary by aid year, state, and college. USAGov lists June 30, 2027 as the federal deadline for the 2026–27 FAFSA, while state and school deadlines may be earlier. Verify the deadlines for the year you plan to attend; dates and program rules can change. USAGov’s FAFSA page provides deadline information.

If a Parent PLUS loan was denied
For a Direct PLUS Loan denied because of adverse credit, the parent borrower may be able to obtain an eligible endorser or appeal the adverse-credit finding. Federal Student Aid requires PLUS Credit Counseling for either route. The school must confirm eligibility, so follow its instructions and provide any requested documents. Ask the financial aid office whether the dependent student can be considered for additional Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds and what amount may be available. These options are specific to a PLUS adverse-credit denial. They do not automatically apply to a private loan rejection or to every other reason a loan may be unavailable. Get the exact reason and applicable reconsideration process from the lender or school.

Ways to close the gap without taking another loan
Request an aid adjustment
If the FAFSA no longer reflects your circumstances—for example, because family finances have changed—ask the school to review your situation. Provide the documents it requests and ask when a decision is expected. An adjustment is not guaranteed, and the outcome is school-specific.
Look for scholarships and other aid
Ask your college about institutional scholarships, state aid, and emergency funds that may still be open. You can also check with your state higher education agency, community organizations, and employers. Confirm eligibility, application requirements, and deadlines with each provider; availability varies.

Consider work and basic-needs support
If you qualify for Federal Work-Study, ask the school about available positions. Campus or other part-time work may also help, but weigh hours against your course workload. Ask student services about food pantries, meal options, health coverage, and public assistance you may qualify for; reducing living expenses can leave more money for education costs.

If you lost federal aid because you did not meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP), read your school’s written SAP policy and ask whether it allows an appeal. Federal rules leave schools to define their processes; an appeal or probation option depends on the institution and your circumstances. The 2026–27 Federal Student Aid Handbook describes school-defined appeal processes and probation.

Compare options before borrowing privately
Federal Student Aid recommends considering federal aid before private student loans. If borrowing still appears necessary, first confirm the remaining amount you actually need. Compare offers and read the written contract for the interest rate, fees, penalties, repayment terms, credit and cosigner requirements, and any satisfactory academic progress requirements. Ask whether payments can be postponed or reduced during hardship and whether forgiveness programs apply; do not assume a private loan offers the repayment flexibility or forgiveness available with some federal loans. When comparing ways to cover the bill, distinguish aid that does not generally need repayment, such as grants and scholarships, from loans that must be repaid. A payment plan spreads an existing bill over installments and may have fees; it is not a loan that creates new aid. For every option, confirm eligibility, timing, total cost, repayment or payment terms, and what happens if you cannot pay on time.
