Start at StudentAid.gov and choose the recovery option that matches the problem: retrieve your username or email sign-in, reset your password, recover the account, or get help with two-step verification. Do not create a second account to replace one you cannot access. Federal Student Aid says each person can have only one StudentAid.gov account; if self-service recovery does not work, use the Federal Student Aid Help Center to find the right contact center.
First, make sure you are trying to access the right account
Go to StudentAid.gov by entering the address yourself rather than following an unexpected message or a link from an unfamiliar sender. Before entering personal information, check that the browser address is on the official StudentAid.gov domain. The username-retrieval form asks for identity information, including a Social Security number (SSN) and date of birth, so take particular care to verify the site before proceeding.

A StudentAid.gov account belongs to one person. A student, parent, spouse, or FAFSA contributor should use their own account rather than sharing credentials. Federal Student Aid says a person can have only one account, and a lost-access account cannot be replaced by making another one. A duplicate may not solve the sign-in problem and can complicate access to aid tasks, records, or required signatures. Use recovery for the existing account.
The account supports FAFSA tasks, access to aid and loan records, repayment tools, and electronic signatures. Federal Student Aid, an Office of the U.S. Department of Education, says: “Your account grants you access to StudentAid.gov and acts as a legal signature for documents.” That is why it matters to recover the correct person’s account instead of trying a family member’s credentials.

Choose the recovery path that matches the problem
| What is happening? | Use this route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot remember the username or email sign-in | “Forgot email address or username?” | The retrieval flow asks for information to confirm identity; the official form includes SSN and date of birth fields. |
| You know the username but cannot remember the password | Password reset | Start from the official sign-in or troubleshooting flow and follow the current identity-verification steps. |
| You cannot complete the second verification step | Try another method already set up, or use the missing-secure-code help route | Possible methods include text message, an authenticator app, a security key, and a saved backup code. |
| The sign-in page says the account is locked or disabled | Follow the instructions shown in that sign-in flow | One Federal Student Aid-branded Nelnet authentication page describes a 30-minute disablement after three unsuccessful attempts; this is specific to that flow. |
| The official self-service steps do not resolve the problem | Federal Student Aid Help Center | Use its account-management area and “Find the contact center that can help me” route. |
Which route should I try first?
Match the route to the part of sign-in that is failing. If you cannot remember the identifier you enter to start sign-in, use “Forgot email address or username?” If you know that identifier and only the password is missing, choose password reset. Those routes address different problems, so starting with the matching one avoids treating a forgotten password as an unknown username.
If your password works but the sign-in flow asks for a code you cannot provide, the issue is two-step verification—not username retrieval. Look for another method you previously configured, or use the separate missing-secure-code help option. Account recovery is the broader route when the usual retrieval, reset, or verification options do not restore access. An explicit locked or disabled notice is different again: follow the instructions shown on that page rather than continuing to guess.
These are official self-service routes, not different accounts or alternate ways to bypass identity checks. Use the one that corresponds to the screen or problem in front of you. If that route does not work, move to account recovery or the Help Center rather than repeatedly submitting guesses or creating another account.

-
Open the official StudentAid.gov sign-in page and select “Forgot email address or username?” Confirm that you are on the official site before entering personal details.
-
Complete the identity questions in the retrieval flow. The official form includes SSN and date of birth fields; enter them only on the verified Federal Student Aid page.
-
Follow the instructions the page provides to identify or retrieve the sign-in information. If the flow cannot verify you or does not resolve the issue, do not create a new account; move to account recovery or the Help Center.
Use this route when the sign-in identifier itself is the problem. If you know the username but have forgotten the password, use password reset instead. These are separate issues with separate official routes.

How do I reset my password?
-
Start at the official StudentAid.gov sign-in page or its account troubleshooting area and choose the password-reset option.
-
Complete the identity-verification steps presented in the live flow. The precise prompts can change, so use the current instructions on the official page rather than an old set of screenshots or directions from a third party.
-
Complete the reset using the page’s instructions, then try signing in with the account’s existing username and the new password. If the sign-in page reports a lockout, follow that flow’s lockout instructions rather than repeatedly trying credentials.
Do not use a password-reset link from an unsolicited email or message. Return to StudentAid.gov directly and begin the reset there.
How can I recover my StudentAid.gov account?
Account recovery is the appropriate route when ordinary username retrieval or password reset does not restore access, or when you cannot satisfy the account’s verification steps. Start from the official account troubleshooting options and choose account recovery. Follow the identity checks and instructions displayed for your situation; the exact prompts are determined by the current official flow.
Keep the recovery attempt tied to the account holder. If you are a parent or FAFSA contributor helping a student, the student should recover their own account. Likewise, a student should not try to sign in with a parent’s account to get around an access problem. The account is personal, and Federal Student Aid’s one-account rule means a second account is not a workaround.
If you cannot get through the recovery flow, write down the point where it stops and any exact error message. That information can help you explain the problem when you contact Federal Student Aid, without repeatedly submitting guesses or starting over with another account.

What if I can’t complete two-step verification?
Two-step verification requires more than the password. If the prompt offers another method you previously configured, try that method instead of repeatedly requesting a code through a device or channel you cannot access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches-
Text message: Use this if the verified phone associated with the account is available and the sign-in flow offers it.
-
Authenticator app: Choose this if you previously set one up and can access it.
-
Security key: Use a key already configured for the account if it is available and accepted by the prompt.
-
Backup code: If you saved the unique backup code, use it when other verification methods are unavailable. Keep the code somewhere secure; it is intended as a fallback, not as information to share with someone claiming to provide support.

These options are useful only if they were set up for the account and the sign-in flow makes them available. If none works, select the official help option for missing secure codes or account recovery rather than creating another account.
The choice among methods depends on what you can access now: a verified phone for a text, an authenticator app you previously configured, a security key already set up, or the backup code you saved. The existence of a method in general does not mean it is available for your account; use only the options shown in your sign-in flow. If you regain access, keep the backup code securely so it remains available if the usual method is lost.

What if I didn’t receive my secure code?
First check whether the sign-in page offers another verification method you previously configured, such as an authenticator app, security key, or saved backup code. If an alternative is available, use it to complete sign-in. If the code is still unavailable and no other method works, follow the separate missing-secure-code help route listed in Federal Student Aid’s troubleshooting options.
Do not assume that requesting more codes will solve a problem with the account’s verification setup, and do not share a code with another person. If the official flow remains blocked, use account recovery or the Help Center’s contact-center finder.

How do I unlock my StudentAid.gov account?
Use the exact instructions on the page that says the account is locked or disabled. One Federal Student Aid-branded authentication page hosted by Nelnet says access is disabled for 30 minutes after three unsuccessful attempts. That page offers waiting, resetting the password for immediate access, or contacting support. The 30-minute period and those choices apply to that particular authentication flow; they should not be treated as a universal rule for every StudentAid.gov access problem.
If your page gives different instructions, follow the instructions displayed there. Avoid repeated guesses while the account is locked. If the page’s stated waiting or reset option does not restore access, use the support route it provides or the Federal Student Aid Help Center.
When to contact Federal Student Aid
Use the Federal Student Aid Help Center if the official retrieval, reset, verification, or recovery routes fail, or if the account’s instructions tell you to contact support. Open the account-management area and choose “Find the contact center that can help me.” This is the official route for identifying the appropriate contact center for the issue.
Contact details and hours can change, so use the live Help Center page rather than relying on a phone number or schedule copied from an older article. When you seek help, be ready to describe the sign-in step you reached and the error wording you saw. Do not send passwords or secure codes in response to unsolicited requests.
If you are helping a family member, make clear whose account is affected and have that account holder follow the recovery process for their own sign-in. Keep the report focused on the route attempted—username retrieval, password reset, second-factor code, account recovery, or lockout—and the message the official page displayed. Do not send credentials or a secure code to someone simply because they claim they can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I can’t access my Federal Student Aid account?
Start at StudentAid.gov and choose the option that matches the problem: retrieve the username or email sign-in, reset the password, address a missing secure code, or recover the account. If self-service does not work, use the Help Center’s “Find the contact center that can help me” route. Do not create a second account.
How do I retrieve my username?
On the official sign-in page, select “Forgot email address or username?” and complete the identity checks in that flow. The official retrieval form includes SSN and date of birth fields, so verify the StudentAid.gov domain before entering them.
What if I didn’t receive my secure code?
Check whether the sign-in prompt offers another method you previously set up, such as an authenticator app, security key, or saved backup code. If no method works, use the official missing-secure-code help route or account recovery.
How do I unlock my StudentAid.gov account?
Follow the instructions on the lockout page. One Federal Student Aid-branded Nelnet authentication flow describes a 30-minute disablement after three unsuccessful attempts and offers waiting, password reset, or contacting support. Those details are specific to that flow, so follow the instructions your page displays.
Can I make a new StudentAid.gov account if I lost access to the old one?
No. Federal Student Aid says each person can have only one account. Use the recovery options for the existing account instead of creating a duplicate.
The Bottom Line
Use the official StudentAid.gov route that matches the specific problem, and keep recovery tied to the account holder. A username retrieval, password reset, second-factor issue, and lockout have different paths. If those options fail, the Federal Student Aid Help Center can direct you to the appropriate contact center. Do not create a second account or share passwords or secure codes.
