One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments have not resumed after release from incarceration, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) and report your release. Ask whether your case needs reinstatement of suspended benefits or a new application, and have official release papers ready if you have them. The next step depends chiefly on which program you receive and how long you were confined.
Contact SSA and ask what is holding up your benefits
Do not assume payments restart automatically when you leave an institution. Tell SSA that you have been released and that your payments have not resumed. You can contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213. SSA lists this number for reporting incarceration or release; service is available in most U.S. time zones Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours and office availability can change, so check SSA’s current contact information before relying on a particular schedule.

Have your release papers available if you have them. If you do not, still contact SSA rather than waiting indefinitely to obtain a document. SSA staff instructions say that, for a Title II reinstatement request without official papers, staff should ask for the last incarceration date and the institution. Explain what documentation you cannot provide and ask what SSA can accept for your record.
During the conversation, ask SSA to identify the program and status on your record, whether a reinstatement request or a new application is required, what evidence is missing, the effective month for any resumed benefit, and the status of any payment. These questions help separate an unrecorded release or incomplete evidence from a case that requires a fresh eligibility decision. SSA must confirm the answer using your individual record.

First identify which benefit was stopped
People often use “Social Security” to mean any payment from SSA, but retirement, survivors, and disability benefits under Title II follow different incarceration rules from SSI. If you are unsure which program you receive, ask SSA to identify it before assuming that a simple restart request is enough.
| Situation | Likely route | What to verify with SSA |
|---|---|---|
| Title II retirement, survivors, or disability benefit suspended during confinement | Request reinstatement and provide release information. | Whether SSA has recorded the release, what evidence remains outstanding, the current suspension status, and the effective month for your case. |
| SSI stopped after a shorter confinement | Ask SSA whether payments can resume under your existing eligibility record. | Whether eligibility remains active and whether current financial, living-arrangement, or identity information is needed. |
| SSI recipient confined for 12 consecutive months or longer | File a new SSI application and receive a new eligibility decision. | How to file, what medical and nonmedical evidence is needed, and whether prerelease steps are still possible. |
| You have not yet been released | Ask about prerelease coordination and prepare documents and an appointment. | Whether facility staff can coordinate with SSA and what to prepare before release. |
How the rules differ for Title II and SSI
Title II retirement, survivors, and disability benefits
SSA describes the Title II suspension threshold as a conviction followed by confinement for more than 30 continuous days. After release, the relevant process is generally to request reinstatement of the suspended benefit and provide release information. SSA’s public materials do not use identical language about the first month for which benefits may be payable: its reentry guidance says benefits can be reinstated starting with the month of release, while its prisoner brochure says the month following release.
Because those general descriptions differ, do not budget on the assumption that a particular month will be payable. Ask SSA to state the effective month for your record and whether it has recorded your release. The date and nature of confinement, conviction status, and release arrangement can affect how SSA handles the case.

Supplemental Security Income
SSI payments are not payable for a full calendar month spent in a public institution. In some cases, payments may resume in the month of release. However, if confinement lasts 12 consecutive months or longer, SSI eligibility terminates; you must apply again and be approved. A long-confinement SSI case is therefore not necessarily a routine reinstatement, even when the person previously received SSI.
For a shorter confinement, ask whether your eligibility record remains active and whether SSA needs updated information about your finances, living arrangement, or identity. The payment interruption alone does not tell you what information is outstanding or whether eligibility is still in place.
Benefits on your record for eligible family members
Eligible spouses or children receiving Title II benefits on a confined beneficiary’s record may continue to receive their benefits while that beneficiary is confined. If a family member’s payment has also stopped, ask SSA to check that person’s record rather than assuming the beneficiary’s suspension explains the change.

What to have ready when you contact SSA
Gather what you can before calling or visiting. The most helpful release document is one that identifies you, the institution, the release date, and an authorized official. SSA’s internal processing instructions describe those details as useful, but they should not be treated as a universal published checklist or a reason to postpone contacting SSA if a paper is unavailable.

- Your official release papers, if available.
- The date you left the institution and the institution’s name. If you lack release papers, give SSA these details as accurately as you can.
- Your current mailing address and contact information so SSA can reach you about an interview or missing evidence.
- Any notice or correspondence SSA has sent about the suspended benefit or a request for information.
- The name of the benefit you believe you received—retirement, survivors, disability, or SSI—or a request for SSA to identify it.
At the end of the conversation, make a note of the date, how you contacted SSA, what the representative said you need to do, and any next step or appointment. If you are asked to submit evidence or attend an interview, follow the instructions and respond promptly. A current address matters because a request sent to an outdated address can leave you unaware that SSA needs more information.
A step-by-step plan after release
- Report the release. Contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213. State clearly that you have been released and that payments have not resumed.
- Confirm the program. Ask whether the interrupted payment was Title II retirement, survivors, or disability, or SSI. If you do not know, ask SSA to check your record.
- Ask which process applies. Find out whether SSA can reinstate suspended benefits or whether you need to submit a new application. This distinction is especially important for SSI after a long confinement.
- Provide release details and evidence. Supply release papers if you have them. If not, explain why and provide the last incarceration date and institution; ask SSA what it can accept in your case.
- Update your contact information. Give SSA your current mailing address and phone number, and attend any interview or appointment it schedules.
- Get the unresolved items stated clearly. Ask what evidence or information is still missing, the effective month SSA has determined, and the status of any payment. If SSA cannot yet give a payment date, ask what decision or step must happen first.
- Complete the next required step. Submit requested material or file the new application if SSA says one is required. Keep track of the response or appointment so you can follow up on the specific outstanding item.
If release papers are missing or your release arrangement is unusual
Missing paperwork does not, by itself, establish that you cannot request reinstatement. Tell SSA what you have and what you cannot obtain. For Title II requests made without official release papers, SSA’s staff instructions call for asking about the last incarceration date and institution. SSA will advise what documentation it can accept for that record.

Describe the exact way your confinement ended. SSA operating procedures address official release, parole or pardon, and certain home-confinement arrangements in connection with Title II reinstatement. That does not mean every form of monitoring, community placement, or release condition receives identical treatment. Give SSA the details rather than assuming that a particular arrangement automatically counts as a release for benefit purposes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you are still incarcerated or helping someone prepare to leave
For SSI, SSA’s 2026 prerelease guidance describes applying several months before an anticipated release when the person is likely to meet SSI eligibility requirements. A facility may have a formal or informal prerelease agreement with SSA, but an SSI prerelease application can be filed even when no agreement exists. Facility staff can alert SSA, provide medical and nonmedical information, share the anticipated release date, and report the actual release.

Title II benefits cannot be reinstated until the institution releases the person. The field office and institution can still prepare in advance: they can identify documents, update the person’s address, and schedule an appointment shortly after release. If you are assisting someone, ask facility staff or SSA whether coordination is available rather than waiting until after release to begin preparing.

What you can—and cannot—conclude from a delay
A delay does not establish that SSA denied eligibility, that a particular document is the only acceptable proof, or that a payment will arrive by a standard number of days. The relevant details include the benefit program, the length and status of confinement, whether release has occurred, the evidence available, and whether SSA has an active eligibility record. The SSA guidance described here does not establish an average restart time or guarantee an individual deposit date.
This process guide covers U.S. Social Security and SSI after correctional confinement. It cannot determine an individual’s eligibility, benefit amount, reason for a case-specific delay, or first deposit date. Those answers depend on SSA’s review of the person’s facts and record, so request the effective month and outstanding requirements directly from the agency.
