A new Invisalign aligner can cause mild pressure or tightness for a day or two. Sharp or severe pain, a tray that stays loose or will not seat, or an aligner that is damaged is different: do not force it or change trays on your own. Check the tray and contact the orthodontist supervising your treatment for instructions. Sudden severe pain with facial swelling, fever, or signs of infection needs urgent attention.
What to do when an aligner hurts or does not fit
- Check the aligner. Look for cracks, sharp edges, or obvious distortion. Do not keep wearing a tray that is sharp, painful, or badly distorted; the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) specifically advises against wearing one.
- Notice whether the sensation is mild and temporary. New-tray pressure or tightness can be expected. If the pain is sharp, severe, persistent, or worrying, contact your orthodontist rather than trying to push through it.
- Call the treating orthodontist if the tray remains loose or will not seat. A short description cannot establish why a tray feels loose or fails to fit. Your provider can assess the fit and tell you what to wear next.
- Follow the provider’s instructions about your current or previous tray. Do not force the new tray, file or reshape it, or independently advance, backtrack, or stop your aligner sequence.
For sudden severe pain accompanied by facial swelling, fever, or signs of infection, seek urgent care. These symptoms are not routine new-tray tightness, according to the AAO’s orthodontic-emergency guidance.
How to tell normal pressure from a problem
Mild tightness after starting a new tray
Invisalign says a new aligner applies pressure and that many people notice tightness or slight discomfort, which “usually only lasts a day or two.” Its guidance also recommends raising concerns with your orthodontist. That is general manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee about how long discomfort should last in an individual case.
Pain that is sharp, severe, or persistent
Do not treat sharp or severe pain as ordinary adjustment discomfort. Contact the clinician overseeing your treatment for advice. If severe pain occurs with facial swelling, fever, or signs of infection, seek urgent attention rather than waiting for a routine check-in.

A loose tray or one that will not seat
A loose feeling or a tray that does not fit can have different explanations; the symptom alone does not show whether treatment is off track. If the fit problem persists, ask your orthodontist to assess it instead of trying to correct the fit yourself.
Can you wear your previous aligner?
Possibly, but do not decide on your own. The AAO says an orthodontist may advise temporarily using the previous aligner if it still fits comfortably while arranging a replacement. Ask your treating orthodontist what to do with both the current tray and the previous one; do not assume the older tray is appropriate if it is uncomfortable or does not fit.

Should you use chewies?
Use chewies only if your own orthodontist has recommended them and explained how to use them. A dental practice’s patient instructions describe chewies as a seating aid and advise contacting the office when trays are not tracking, but that is practice-level advice, not a universal Invisalign or AAO protocol. Chewies are not a substitute for professional assessment of a tray that remains loose or will not seat.

Invisalign treatment is directed by a trained dental professional, and the provider monitors progress through check-ins. The manufacturer advises patients to discuss concerns with their orthodontist; see its guidance on provider oversight and finding a doctor and on discomfort during treatment. Your clinician—not a general wear-time rule—should tell you whether to continue with the current tray, use a previous one temporarily, or arrange a replacement.
