If GST on an invoice seems wrong, first identify the exact mismatch and check it against the supply, supporting documents and transaction details. Then ask the supplier in writing to explain and correct it. Do not assume a portal entry proves the tax is correct—or that it makes input tax credit (ITC) eligible. The right fix depends on what is wrong, whether the supplier has filed the invoice, whether it is an e-invoice and whether you have claimed credit. This guidance concerns Indian GST; the applicable treatment must be assessed against the transaction and rules in force for its date.
Start by pinning down what appears wrong
An invoice can look incorrect for several different reasons: the GST rate or taxable value may be wrong, the tax amount may not calculate from the stated rate, the tax may be split between CGST and SGST instead of shown as IGST (or vice versa), or an invoice detail such as a GSTIN or place of supply may be inaccurate. A mismatch can also arise from a discount, freight or another charge, the description or classification of the supply, or a later adjustment. These possibilities call for different checks and corrections.

Compare the invoice with the transaction
Keep the original invoice and compare it with the order or contract, the goods or services actually supplied, delivery or service records, and the payment calculation. Check the invoice number and date, supplier and recipient GSTINs, description and quantity, taxable value, rate, tax amount, tax split and place-of-supply details. Recalculate the tax using the invoice’s stated taxable value and rate. That arithmetic check can show whether the amount is inconsistent with the rate printed on the bill, but it does not by itself establish that the rate or classification is legally correct.
Do not decide that a rate is wrong without identifying the actual goods or services, their classification, the transaction facts and the rate applicable to that supply. The documents and official materials covered here do not establish a rate for an unspecified purchase. If the dispute is about classification or the correct rate rather than a clear transcription or calculation error, get a qualified Indian GST professional to assess the transaction before treating one figure as definitive.

Separate the possible error from its evidence
- Rate or tax calculation: Is the printed rate inconsistent with the supply, or does the tax amount fail to match the taxable value and stated rate?
- Taxable value: Does the invoice value agree with the agreed price and the records for the supply, including any relevant discount or additional charge?
- Tax type or place of supply: Do the invoice’s tax split and place-of-supply details fit the transaction facts? Do not infer the correct split from the appearance of the bill alone.
- Identity or invoice details: Are the supplier or recipient GSTIN, invoice number, date, description and quantity accurate?
- Portal or return record: Is the underlying invoice wrong, or does the supplier’s filed record differ from the document you received?
Ask the supplier to explain and correct the invoice
Send a written request that identifies the invoice number and date, the field you believe is wrong, the reason for your concern and the correction you are asking the supplier to make. Attach or refer to the relevant order, delivery or service record, payment calculation, or other supporting document. Ask the supplier to confirm whether it has filed the invoice details in GSTR-1 and whether an e-invoice IRN was generated. That filing and e-invoice status can affect which correction route is available.
Keep your request, the supplier’s reply, the original invoice and any corrected document or note together. A verbal explanation may help resolve a simple query, but written confirmation makes it easier to reconcile the eventual return record and your purchase ledger. If the supplier says it has already corrected the issue, ask what it filed and when rather than relying only on a promise to fix it.
There is a statutory limit on collecting tax: section 32(2) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act states, “No registered person shall collect tax except in accordance with the provisions of this Act or the rules made thereunder.” If the supplier refuses to address a material discrepancy, whether that provision or another legal remedy applies depends on the facts; this sentence alone does not determine the proper outcome of a particular dispute.

Choose a correction that fits the error and filing status
A credit note, debit note, return amendment and portal rejection are not interchangeable ways to handle any invoice problem. Ask the supplier to explain why its proposed correction matches the underlying error and the status of the invoice record.
| Situation | Possible correction or next action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable value or tax charged was higher than the amount payable | Section 34 of the CGST Act provides for a supplier credit note in the circumstances it covers. | Confirm that the note reflects the actual overstatement and that the supplier’s return reporting and any required recipient ITC adjustment align with it. |
| Taxable value or tax charged was lower than the amount payable | Section 34 provides for a debit note where the amount was below what was payable. | Check the revised amount and its supporting calculation, and wait for the supplier’s filing before deciding how to treat the record for ITC. |
| An invoice detail or filed record needs correction | The supplier may need to amend the earlier GSTR-1 record; the appropriate route depends on filing status and period. | Ask whether the record was saved, submitted or filed, and which correction the supplier made. Do not treat a credit note as a universal substitute for correcting an inaccurate invoice record. |
| A record appears in the Invoice Management System (IMS) | Review the record and use only the actions available for that record and status. | Check whether the record is correct and whether the supplier has filed an amendment. IMS actions do not replace the supplier’s responsibility to correct its filing. |
| An e-invoice was generated | The cited IRIS IRP FAQ describes cancellation within 24 hours; it says an e-invoice cannot be amended on the portal. | Confirm the generation time and current portal guidance. After the cancellation window, the supplier should use the appropriate return correction. |
Check what the supplier has filed
GST Portal guidance describes amendments to earlier GSTR-1 records and GSTR-1A as a route for additions or corrections before filing the corresponding GSTR-3B, where available. Availability depends on the filing window and status. Portal screens and functionality can change, so the supplier should check the current instructions for its relevant period rather than rely on a generic promise about a particular button or deadline.
Ask whether the original record was only saved, submitted or filed, and ask for the correction type and filing date. This helps distinguish a document correction from a correction to a return record. A supplier’s corrected paperwork and its reported data need to be reconciled; receiving a revised invoice alone does not establish that the return record has also been fixed.

Use IMS actions carefully
GSTN’s IMS FAQ dated 22 September 2024 describes accept, reject and pending actions for many supplier records. It says a record for which no action is taken is deemed accepted when GSTR-2B is generated. The FAQ dated 17 October 2024 adds that an incorrect invoice should generally be corrected by amending the invoice in GSTR-1 rather than by issuing a credit note instead. It also says a recipient cannot act on an upward amended invoice or debit note until the supplier files it. The FAQs describe special behavior for credit notes: an original credit note cannot be kept pending.

Reconcile the correction before claiming ITC
If you are a registered business recipient, compare the corrected invoice or note and the supplier’s filing with your purchase ledger and GSTR-2B. GSTR-2B is a portal summary of credit information, including available and not-available summaries; it is not, by itself, proof that a claim is legally eligible. The GST Portal cautions that other legal restrictions may affect credit.

Section 16 of the CGST Act sets conditions for ITC that include possessing a qualifying invoice or debit note, receiving the supply, tax being paid to the government and filing the required return. A wrong amount, disputed supply detail or unresolved supplier record can therefore matter even when an entry appears in portal data. Do not claim a disputed amount simply because it is visible in GSTR-2B, and do not assume that a supplier’s correction automatically resolves every condition for your claim.
Practical reconciliation checks
- Match the invoice or correction document to the transaction and the purchase ledger.
- Check whether the supplier’s corrected filing is reflected in the relevant portal information.
- Identify whether you have already claimed ITC on the original amount and whether a correction requires an adjustment.
- Keep the supplier’s written explanation, supporting records and correction documents with the invoice.
For a material amount, a disputed claim or an uncertain eligibility question, seek advice from a qualified Indian GST practitioner or chartered accountant before filing or adjusting ITC. The applicable treatment can depend on the supply, the parties’ registration, the return status and the rules in force for the transaction date.

If the invoice is an e-invoice
The IRIS IRP FAQ says an e-invoice cannot be amended on the portal and describes cancellation within 24 hours of generation. It says that after this window the supplier should make the appropriate GSTR-1 correction, giving a credit note as an example. The FAQ’s publication date is not stated, so check current portal guidance and applicable rules before acting on the 24-hour window.

If cancellation is unavailable because of a technical problem, the IRIS FAQ instructs the taxpayer to send the GST Helpdesk the invoice number and the specific issue. Separate the technical problem from the commercial or legal correction: resolving a portal error does not, by itself, settle what the supplier must report or what the recipient may claim. Keep the technical correspondence alongside the invoice records.
When the supplier will not fix a material error
There is no single universal deadline or escalation route established for every invoice dispute. The next step depends on the recipient’s registration, the supply and state, the amount involved, the filing status, whether an e-invoice was generated and whether the issue is primarily tax-law, commercial or technical. Preserve the documents and written correspondence, and avoid making a disputed tax or ITC decision solely on an informal assurance.
A qualified Indian GST practitioner or chartered accountant can assess the transaction, the law applicable on its date and the supplier’s filing status. If the problem is specifically a technical inability to cancel an e-invoice, the cited IRIS IRP FAQ directs taxpayers to the GST Helpdesk with the invoice number and issue. For other disputes, confirm the appropriate route against current official instructions and the circumstances of the case.
