Never share your recovery phrase or pay an unsolicited person who promises to get your funds back.
First, contain the damage
Treat suspected theft as both a security incident and a possible crime. If an exchange account may be compromised, reach the exchange using its official app or a website address you enter yourself. Follow its account-security and incident-reporting process. Do not use a phone number, link, or contact details supplied in an unexpected message or call: criminals impersonate exchange staff to obtain credentials and steal cryptocurrency, the FBI warns (FBI IC3, August 1, 2024).

- Secure the email account and phone number used to access the exchange, as well as other accounts that share passwords. Use unique passwords and the provider’s available account-protection steps.
- If you still control an account, check for unfamiliar sign-ins, changed contact details, new withdrawal addresses, or other changes, and tell the provider what you find.
- Do not share passwords, one-time codes, private keys, or recovery phrases with anyone claiming to be support or law enforcement.
Identify whether the wallet was custodial or self-custody
The next steps depend on who controlled access to the funds. An exchange account is generally managed by the provider, while a self-custody wallet is controlled through its keys or recovery phrase. Contact only the provider responsible for the affected service, and follow that wallet’s own official instructions.

For a self-custody wallet
A recovery phrase can provide access to and control over a wallet. Never give it to a purported helper or paste it into a website. Coinbase, for example, says it cannot access a Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase or move funds on a user’s behalf; that guidance is specific to Coinbase Wallet, and other wallets may have different official procedures (Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase guidance).

If you think the phrase was exposed, do not rely on generic instructions for another wallet or blockchain network. Check the affected wallet’s official documentation and avoid links sent by strangers.
Preserve evidence before it disappears
Make a dated record of what happened and save copies of relevant messages, account alerts, and transaction details. The FBI asks victims to provide as much information as possible and says to file a report even when some transaction details are unavailable (FBI IC3, FBI Guidance for Cryptocurrency Scam Victims, August 24, 2023).

- Cryptocurrency or token type, amount, and the date and time of the transfer.
- Sending and receiving wallet addresses and the transaction hash or transaction ID.
- The wallet or exchange involved, including any exchange used to send or receive funds.
- How the suspected thief first contacted you, plus relevant websites, app names, domains, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, texts, and social profiles.
- Screenshots, account notifications, communications, and a clear timeline of events.
- Relevant account changes or two-factor authentication events to explain what happened. Do not include or publish your password, private key, recovery phrase, or active authentication codes.
Report the theft
In the United States, the FBI directs cryptocurrency-scam victims to file a complaint with its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). You can also contact a local FBI field office. Include the transaction information and supporting records you have; incomplete details are not a reason to delay filing (FBI IC3 guidance).

Watch for recovery scams
After a theft, you may be contacted by someone claiming to be a recovery agent, investigator, lawyer, or exchange employee. Be especially wary of unsolicited offers that guarantee results, demand upfront fees or additional payments, or ask for identity, account, or financial information. The FBI and FTC warn victims not to pay people who approach them promising to recover lost cryptocurrency (FBI IC3 recovery-company warning; FTC consumer alert).
Private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders. The FBI says exchanges may freeze accounts under their internal processes or in response to legal process; what they can do depends on the circumstances. The FBI reported that victims targeted by fictitious law firms offering cryptocurrency recovery lost over $9.9 million from February 2023 through February 2024. That figure concerns reported secondary victimization, not the total amount of cryptocurrency stolen (FBI IC3, June 24, 2024).

What recovery can—and cannot—be promised
There is no general guarantee that a completed transfer can be reversed or that stolen funds can be returned. The outcome depends on factors such as the recipient, timing, service provider, jurisdiction, and any law-enforcement or legal process. Contacting a provider and reporting promptly are sensible steps, but neither assures recovery. The FBI’s concise advice to victims is: “Do not wait” (FBI IC3, August 24, 2023).
