How to Compare Radeon GPUs With Nvidia Alternatives When Stock Is Limited

When your preferred GPU is unavailable, compare exact in-stock Radeon and GeForce models against your games, workloads, system and actual checkout budget.

Compare the exact Radeon and GeForce cards you can actually buy—not brand names or MSRP—using matched tests for your games, resolution and settings. Then weigh ray tracing, upscaling, VRAM, workload software, power and system fit against each card’s current checkout price. If your first choice is unavailable, the better substitute is the in-stock card that meets your needs at a price you can accept; there is no universal brand winner.

Start with the card you can buy and the job it must do

Before comparing performance charts, write down five constraints: your target resolution, the games or applications you use, your maximum spend, any display or feature requirements, and the exact in-stock card and seller you are considering. A broad ranking cannot tell you whether a particular card is a good substitute for your use.

Compare exact SKUs, including VRAM capacity and the specific board partner model where relevant. A GPU name alone does not establish the card’s dimensions, cooling, power connectors, warranty or current price. Confirm those details in the manufacturer’s specifications and the retailer’s listing.

Compare gaming performance with matched tests

Use your resolution, games and image settings

Look for benchmarks of both GPUs in the same games, on the same test system, at your target resolution and settings. A 1440p result does not answer a 4K question, and a chart using different presets or test methods is not a clean comparison. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU Benchmarks Hierarchy 2026 covers multiple generations of AMD and Nvidia cards, as well as Intel Arc B-series; use its results as a starting point, then check whether its games and settings resemble yours.

Check average frame rates and 1% lows

Average FPS indicates overall throughput, while 1% lows can reveal dips that affect perceived smoothness. Tom’s Guide says its GPU testing uses one common system and reports average frame rates and 1% lows across multiple titles. Its published results are testing from that outlet, not tests performed for this article. See its graphics-card guide for methodology and model-specific results.

Do not assume a small lead in one game will hold in your whole library. Compare several titles you care about, and give more weight to the ones you play most.

Treat ray tracing as a separate comparison

Rasterized performance and ray-tracing performance are distinct. If you play games with ray tracing, compare the same game at the same RT preset on each candidate. Check results without reconstruction first, then with the relevant upscaling feature enabled. Do not infer the outcome from shader counts, product tier or brand alone; performance can shift between raster and RT workloads. Tom’s Hardware discusses these feature differences in its AMD-versus-Nvidia GPU comparison.

Evaluate upscaling and frame generation in the games you play

DLSS and FSR can render a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstruct the output; frame generation creates additional displayed frames. Their usefulness depends on game support, implementation, GPU generation and your tolerance for image-quality or latency trade-offs. Check whether the specific games you play support the feature on the candidate card, and compare image quality and responsiveness where reviews test them.

Generated frames are not equivalent to native-rendered frames and do not repair an inadequate base frame rate. Give priority to a card that performs well enough before these features are enabled, then treat supported upscaling or frame generation as an extra. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 graphics-card buying guide discusses DLSS, FSR and frame-generation context.

Check VRAM against resolution, settings and workload

Compare the memory capacity of the exact card and consider the games, texture settings, resolution and non-gaming tasks you expect it to handle. Capacity alone does not determine speed, and a larger VRAM figure does not guarantee better performance or longevity.

Tom’s Guide describes 12GB as a sensible starting point for 1080p or 1440p gaming and says 16GB offers more comfortable headroom for demanding games, higher textures and 4K ambitions. Treat that as the guide’s heuristic, not a universal minimum or guarantee; actual needs vary by title and workload.

For example, Tom’s Guide lists the Radeon RX 9070 GRE as a 12GB card aimed at 1440p. That is a model-specific specification and positioning, not proof that every 12GB card suits every 1440p game. Check the exact SKU and relevant benchmarks.

Separate gaming from creator and AI workloads

A gaming hierarchy does not settle which GPU is better for video editing, rendering or AI. If you use a named editor, renderer, AI framework or other application, compare benchmarks for that software and task, and check its supported features and GPU compatibility. A card’s gaming FPS is not evidence that it will lead in your work software.

Compare the real offer, not a headline price

When stock is limited, compare the checkout total for an exact card that is marked in stock, including shipping and any relevant taxes. Confirm who sells and ships it, the return window and warranty terms. An MSRP, historic low or search-result deal is not necessarily an offer you can buy today.

Price trackers can help locate listings, but their entries are snapshots and may include out-of-stock cards. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU price tracker includes out-of-stock models. PC Gamer explains that its graphics-card price watch reports lowest available prices rather than average prices and notes that memory shortages have changed the price picture. Neither a low listing nor a single retailer’s stock on one day establishes which brand is generally easier to buy.

For a fair value comparison, note the country, retailer, date checked, card condition (new or used) and full checkout price for each candidate. Recheck before buying because availability and listings change.

Make sure the available card fits your system

A faster card is not a substitute if it cannot be installed or powered safely in your PC. Before purchase, verify the specific card’s dimensions, required power connection and manufacturer-recommended PSU capacity, plus case airflow and display outputs. Compare the manufacturer specifications for each exact model; the benchmark sources do not establish a complete compatibility checklist for your build.

Use a practical substitute rule

  1. Define the need: choose a target resolution, settings, games or applications, feature requirements and spending limit.
  2. List buyable candidates: record the exact Radeon and GeForce SKUs, seller, stock status and checkout total. Exclude out-of-stock listings from the purchase decision.
  3. Match the evidence: compare multiple relevant games at the same resolution and settings, including average FPS and 1% lows; add RT tests if ray tracing matters.
  4. Check the non-FPS trade-offs: verify supported upscaling and frame generation in your games, VRAM against your settings, workload-specific software results and system compatibility.
  5. Choose the offer that clears your requirements: if both do, compare their total cost and features; if only one does, decide whether its live price is acceptable or wait for another listing.

Current guides include examples such as Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 XT, and GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and RTX 5070 Ti. They are comparison candidates, not a universal shortlist: confirm local availability, exact specifications and current prices before treating any as an alternative. Tom’s Guide discusses the RX 9070 XT alongside RTX 5070 Ti-class performance, but that pairing does not replace matched tests for your games and settings.
