Start by checking the transaction hash (TXID) on an explorer for the network used. That shows whether the transfer has not yet entered a block, is still accumulating confirmations, or is confirmed. Then check the destination address and network before deciding whether to wait, use a wallet-supported pending-transaction control, or contact the receiving service. A confirmed transfer generally cannot be reversed.
First, find out what happened to the transaction
- Get the transaction hash. Open the transfer in the sending wallet or exchange and copy its TXID. If you are the recipient, ask the sender for it. Coinbase explains how to open the transaction in a block explorer from its transaction details; Uniswap recommends checking the explorer for the network the transaction used.
- Choose an explorer for that exact network. A similar asset name or address format is not enough to identify the right chain. Check the transaction hash on the network where it was sent.
- Read the transaction state. Blockchain.com describes a pending transaction as submitted but not yet included in a block; a confirming transaction is in a block but has not reached the required number of confirmations; and a confirmed transaction has met the relevant service’s confirmation requirement. The threshold varies by blockchain and receiving service.
- Compare the destination details. Check the address and network shown in the transaction against the deposit details provided by the recipient. A transfer can be complete on-chain while the receiving platform is still waiting for its confirmation threshold or for an account requirement to be met.
- Do not send it again just because the balance has not changed. Establish whether the original transfer was broadcast and what its explorer status is first. Resending without checking can create a second transaction or add uncertainty.
Why is my crypto transaction pending?
“Pending” can refer to different stages. The transaction may not yet be included in a block, or it may already be on-chain but not yet credited by the receiving platform. A wallet or exchange status label alone does not distinguish those cases; the TXID and the receiving service’s policy do.
Possible causes of an unconfirmed transaction include network congestion, a low transaction fee, block timing, or temporary synchronization issues. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Inspect the transaction on the correct explorer rather than assuming a particular cause.
Some services also show a deposit as pending until it receives enough confirmations. Coinbase explains that exchange deposits remain pending until the required confirmations accrue. Its Exchange guidance gives two confirmations for BTC as an example in that article; that is a service-specific example, not a universal Bitcoin rule or a current threshold for every asset.

What to do while the transaction is unconfirmed
If the destination is correct
If the explorer shows a valid transaction headed to the intended address, waiting may be appropriate. Some wallets offer a way to speed up an unconfirmed transaction by replacing or resubmitting it with a higher fee; availability and steps vary by wallet and network. MetaMask describes waiting, speeding up, or canceling through supported controls. A higher fee does not guarantee confirmation.
Use only the controls and instructions provided by the wallet or exchange that sent the transaction. Fees and eligibility depend on the platform and network.

If the destination is wrong but the transaction is still unconfirmed
Check whether the sending wallet offers cancellation for that transaction. Cancellation is not available in every wallet or network, and it is different from reversing a confirmed transfer. Uniswap says cancellation may require a higher-fee transaction, incur a network cost, and work only when there are no other pending transactions. Follow the wallet’s own instructions rather than attempting an unrelated replacement or sending another transfer.
The explorer says confirmed, but the recipient has not received the funds
- Compare the confirmed transaction’s destination address and network with the receiving service’s deposit instructions.
- Check that the service supports that asset on that network and has received the required number of confirmations.
- Review any account actions or identity requirements that may affect crediting.
- If the details match and the balance is still missing, contact the recipient’s official support channel. Provide the TXID, asset, network, and relevant deposit details.
A transfer on the wrong network or involving an unsupported asset may be lost, or its recovery may depend on a case-specific process. Policies differ: Coinbase warns that it cannot recover funds in the wrong-network case it describes, while Blockchain.com says it may be able to help with some incorrect or unsupported transfers to accounts it manages, subject to circumstances and its recovery conditions. Do not assume recovery is available.

If the transfer was confirmed to the wrong address or network
A confirmed blockchain transfer generally cannot be canceled or reversed by the sender. Coinbase states: “Crypto transactions are final and cannot be canceled or reversed.”
- You know who controls the address: Contact that person and ask whether they are willing and able to return the funds.
- The address belongs to an exchange or custodial wallet: Contact that platform through its official support route and provide the TXID and the exact network used. The platform may investigate, but recovery is not assured.
- You cannot identify or contact the address owner: Recovery may not be possible.
- The network was wrong: Contact the recipient platform or wallet’s official support with the TXID and network details. Some services may investigate; others state that they cannot recover such funds. Similar-looking addresses do not establish that funds can be retrieved.
Avoid recovery scams
Do not trust unsolicited direct messages or anyone promising guaranteed recovery. Find support details through the provider’s official website or app. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to be support.

Blockchain.com warns: “We will never ask you to deposit significant funds to unfreeze your account or speed up stuck transaction.” MetaMask also warns that people claiming they can recover funds or represent MetaMask may be scammers. A demand to pay a stranger to unlock, trace, or return a transfer is not a safe recovery route.
