If it is still unconfirmed, a wallet may support a chain-specific replacement or fee bump; if it is confirmed, you generally cannot cancel it, and recovery depends on the recipient or service controlling the destination. Do not share your recovery phrase or pay anyone who contacts you promising to get the funds back.
Start by identifying the transaction
- Save the details. Record the asset and amount, sending wallet or exchange, destination address, network selected, approximate send time, status or error message, and transaction hash if one is available. A transaction hash identifies a transaction record; it is not the same as a wallet address. Hash and address formats vary by blockchain. The FBI’s IC3 examples illustrate the difference.
- Open the send record in the app or website you used. Follow its block-explorer link, if provided, and check the recorded destination, network, status and confirmation count. Coinbase recommends checking the transaction status and explorer record; for a send pending at zero confirmations, it advises contacting Coinbase support. Use the service’s official app or website, not a link sent by a stranger. Coinbase’s troubleshooting guidance
- Ask the recipient to check the same network. Some assets can be sent over more than one network. The recipient needs to look for the transfer on the network actually used, not just search for the asset name. Coinbase warns that it cannot recover funds sent on the wrong network. Coinbase’s guidance on crypto sends
If an exchange facilitated the transfer, the record may still be internal to that platform rather than on a public blockchain. The IRS distinguishes on-chain transactions from off-chain exchange transactions. Ask the sending platform for the transfer’s status and whether a transaction hash exists. If the transaction is still pending
Pending generally means the transaction has not yet been included in a block. It may confirm later, remain unconfirmed, or be replaced if the blockchain, wallet and transaction state allow it. A low fee can contribute to a delay, but there is no universal cancellation button or guaranteed confirmation time. Bitcoin.org says Bitcoin blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average; block discovery is probabilistic, so that is not a promise of when a particular transfer will confirm. Bitcoin.org: What you need to know
Before trying to change anything, check the wallet’s own instructions for that chain and transaction. Some supported Bitcoin or Ethereum wallets provide replacement or fee-bump procedures. They are conditional, can involve an additional fee, and must match the wallet’s supported method and the transaction’s current state.

If the transfer was sent from an exchange, do not try to use a self-custody wallet’s replacement steps on it. Contact the exchange through its official support channel; Coinbase, for example, advises contacting support when a send remains pending with zero confirmations. Coinbase’s guidance on crypto sends
If it is confirmed but went to the wrong address or network
Once a transaction is confirmed, the sender generally cannot reverse it. Bitcoin.org says confirmed Bitcoin sent to a wrong address can only be refunded by the recipient; Ethereum.org likewise states an Ethereum transaction is irreversible. - If you know the recipient: Contact them using a trusted channel and ask whether they can return the funds. A return is a new transaction, not a reversal.
- If the address belongs to an exchange or service: Contact that provider through its official app or website and give it the transaction hash and other details. It may be able to explain whether its own recovery process applies, but support cannot override blockchain consensus.
- If the destination is a smart contract: Check the contract’s official documentation for any recovery or withdrawal function. Do not trust someone who claims they can unlock funds just because they know the transaction details.
- If the address is unknown or inaccessible: Recovery may not be possible. An address that looks familiar does not establish who controls it or whether anyone can access funds sent there.
Wrong-network outcomes depend on the receiving address and provider; do not assume the asset can be recovered simply because the address format looks compatible. Coinbase says it cannot recover funds sent on the wrong network. Policies differ: Blockchain.com describes limited recovery attempts for certain unsupported or incorrect transfers to its own accounts, while warning that ordinary network transfers are irreversible. Check the receiving provider’s current policy rather than assuming its exception applies to your transfer. Blockchain.com: Recovering unsupported crypto deposits Coinbase’s guidance on crypto sends
Contact support and report suspected fraud safely
Use the official support channel for the wallet, exchange or service involved. Provide the transaction hash, destination, network and a concise description of what happened. Preserve relevant messages and records if you suspect fraud. Support may inspect platform records or explain a provider-specific policy; it cannot guarantee a refund or undo a confirmed on-chain transfer.

People who have already lost funds may be targeted by scammers posing as recovery experts, lawyers or law enforcement. The FBI says these operators advertise online, contact victims directly, make false legal or law-enforcement claims, and seek upfront or additional fees. Exchanges may freeze accounts under their own processes or legal process, but a private recovery company cannot order a seizure. FBI IC3: Cryptocurrency recovery scams
