What to Check in a Company’s Quarterly Results Beyond Revenue Growth

Revenue growth is only the start. Check whether it is comparable, profitable, cash-generative, and supported by a resilient balance sheet and credible outlook.

Revenue growth tells you whether a company sold more, but not whether that growth was profitable, produced cash, or improved the business’s financial position. To read an earnings release well, compare growth on a like-for-like basis, inspect margins and cash flow, check debt and segments, and read the outlook alongside its assumptions.

Start by checking whether growth is comparable

Compare the quarter with the same quarter a year earlier; use sequential comparisons as additional context, especially when seasonality affects sales. Then distinguish reported growth from organic or constant-currency growth. Acquisitions, divestitures, business closures, foreign-exchange movements, and changes in price, volume, and product mix can all affect the headline.

Read the company’s definition of “organic” and “constant currency” rather than assuming it is standardized. For example, W.W. Grainger reported Q2 2026 sales growth of 10.3%, versus 13.7% on a daily, organic, constant-currency basis after accounting for its U.K. exit and foreign-exchange impact. Those are company-reported figures illustrating how portfolio changes and definitions affect comparisons, not a formula to apply to every company. Grainger’s Q2 2026 release explains the calculation.

Check whether sales growth is becoming profit

Look at gross profit and margin, operating income and margin, net income and margin, and diluted earnings per share (EPS). Compare both dollar amounts and margins with the year-earlier quarter. A growing company can report higher sales while margins shrink, so ask what management says is driving the change.

  • Gross margin: Consider the company’s explanations of pricing, product mix, input costs, and freight.
  • Operating margin: Check operating expenses and whether higher sales are spreading fixed costs across a larger base.
  • Net income and EPS: Look for the effects of interest, taxes, and share-count changes as well as operating performance.

Grainger said its Q2 2026 operating margin rose 120 basis points year over year, attributing the improvement to gross-margin gains, sales leverage in one segment, and its U.K. exit. It also said EPS reflected fewer shares and a higher effective tax rate. The example shows why a reported change and the company’s stated drivers belong together; it does not establish that the same factors explain another issuer’s results. Grainger’s release provides the details.

Test whether accounting earnings turn into cash

Compare cash from operating activities with net income. If the two move differently, read the working-capital discussion: changes in receivables, inventory, and payables can shift cash between quarters. Distinguish timing effects management identifies from any longer-running trend, without assuming that a quarterly difference will automatically reverse.

Then consider capital expenditures (capex), which are cash spent on property and equipment. Subtract capex from operating cash flow as a simple analytical step, and review what the company reports as free cash flow (FCF). Also see how cash was used—for example, for debt repayment, acquisitions, dividends, or share repurchases.

Grainger reported Q2 2026 operating cash flow of $444 million, capex of $111 million, and FCF of $333 million; it said unfavorable working capital partly offset operating cash flow. These are company-reported figures for that quarter, not a general expectation. Its earnings release gives the accompanying explanation.

Read the issuer’s free-cash-flow definition

FCF is not a uniformly defined GAAP line item in these examples. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K defines it as operating cash flow less capex and cautions that the result does not represent residual cash available for discretionary spending because it does not deduct obligations such as credit-facility principal payments. Avantor’s Q2 2026 release uses a different definition, adding certain acquisition-related transaction costs and taxes to cash from operations less capex. Read the issuer’s definition and reconciliation before comparing FCF across companies: the same label may describe different calculations.

Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its measure and caveat; Avantor’s July 29, 2026 release describes its calculation.

Assess financial resilience and capital allocation

Review cash, debt, liquidity measures, leverage, maturities, and other commitments the company discusses. Then consider whether cash is going to investment in the business, acquisitions, debt reduction, dividends, or buybacks. A single leverage ratio cannot settle whether a balance sheet is safe: companies may define adjusted leverage differently, and the cited evidence establishes no universal threshold.

Avantor reported cash of $306.8 million, gross debt of $3,715.4 million, and adjusted net leverage of 3.3x as of June 30, 2026. These figures describe Avantor at that date; use its definitions and reconciliation rather than treating the ratio as a benchmark for another issuer. Avantor’s release sets out the figures.

Look inside segments and operating indicators

Consolidated results can mask different conditions in separate businesses. Compare segment sales and margins with the prior-year period, and read management’s explanations for changes. Where the company reports them, add indicators suited to its business, such as orders, bookings, backlog, customer retention, or unit volumes; do not treat an indicator as interchangeable with revenue or profit.

Read guidance together with its assumptions

Compare the new full-year outlook with the previous range, noting which figures are GAAP and which are adjusted. Check the assumptions management provides about currency, tax, restructuring, capex, or demand. Ask whether the reported quarter supports or conflicts with the outlook, and how much of the year remains; one quarter alone does not confirm that an annual forecast will be met.

In its July 29, 2026 release, Avantor raised its organic revenue growth and adjusted EPS outlook, listed assumptions, and warned that certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures could not be reconciled without unreasonable effort. GE Vernova also raised its 2026 revenue and FCF guidance in its Q2 results. These are dated company announcements, not current forecasts or recommendations. See Avantor’s release and GE Vernova’s Q2 2026 results exhibit for their respective outlooks and qualifications.

Use adjusted metrics as supplements, not substitutes

For adjusted EPS, adjusted EBITDA, organic growth, adjusted leverage, or FCF, check the reconciliation to the closest GAAP measure, which items the company removes or adds, and whether its definition has changed. These figures can add context, but similarly named measures may not be comparable between companies.

Innovex says its non-GAAP calculations may differ from those of other companies. Avantor says non-GAAP measures should not be considered in isolation or as substitutes for reported GAAP results, and encourages review of its SEC-filed financial statements. A sound comparison starts with the reported results, then uses adjusted measures with their definitions in view. See Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K and Avantor’s Q2 2026 release.

Compare companies carefully

Start by comparing one issuer with itself over time using consistent definitions. Peer comparisons are more useful only after checking that reporting periods, business mix, segment definitions, and non-GAAP calculations are sufficiently similar. There is no single metric or target level that ranks every business: growth quality, profitability, cash conversion, financial resilience, segment performance, and outlook each answer a different question.
