Gusto, QuickBooks Workforce, Paychex Flex, OnPay, SurePayroll, and Rippling are candidates to investigate, but the available comparisons are vendor-authored, not independent head-to-head tests. The right fit depends on your business and the exact plan each provider offers.
How to choose an ADP alternative
Start with what you need the service to do, then compare the same requirements across providers. ADP’s small-business guide, which says its information was accurate as of July 22, 2026, suggests weighing payroll confidence, ease of use, support, value, and the ability to adapt as needs change. Those are useful decision criteria, but the guide is published by ADP and is not an independent evaluation.

- Payroll and taxes: Ask what the vendor calculates, files, and pays, and what remains your responsibility as the employer. Confirm how it handles the tax jurisdictions and worker types relevant to your business.
- HR, benefits, and time: Identify which functions are included in the quoted plan and which require separate modules or paid add-ons.
- Support and onboarding: Check how migration assistance works, how to reach a person, and whether support hours or service levels depend on the plan.
- Integrations: Verify that your specific accounting, time-tracking, and other required tools connect on the plan you are considering.
- Growth and complexity: Ask how the service handles additional employees, states, or changing HR requirements before you commit.
- Total cost: Request an itemized quote for your employee count and required services. Include add-ons and any costs associated with support or implementation rather than comparing headline starting prices.

What to know about Gusto’s plans and features

It says plans include unlimited payroll runs, bill for active employees, and are month-to-month, with the ability to upgrade or downgrade plans. The page also lists paid options such as next-day, instant, and same-day pay; time and attendance; and priority support. Fees and feature availability can change, so check the current plan details and quote before deciding.

Gusto says it files federal, state, and local payroll tax forms on a company’s behalf, including forms such as W-2, 1099, 940, and 941. It also lists accounting integrations including QuickBooks and Xero. Its materials distinguish basic online help and business-hours contact from priority and Premium Account support. These are Gusto’s descriptions: verify coverage, responsibilities, integration availability, and support terms for your location and selected plan.
Compare the full quote, not just the base price
Ask each provider to price the same scenario: your current employee count, pay schedule, locations, worker types, and required payroll, HR, time, benefits, and accounting features. Get the quote in writing and ask for a breakdown of recurring charges, add-ons, and any implementation or other fees. That makes it easier to see whether a lower entry price still meets your needs once essential services are included.

ADP says RUN pricing depends on business size, payroll needs, and selected services, and that prospective customers must request a quote. Gusto’s page lists multiple plans and paid options rather than establishing one price for every business. For either service, use a current, business-specific quote instead of assuming an advertised starting figure represents your total cost.
Plan the switch before choosing a provider
Migration is part of the purchase decision. Gusto says it can help transfer payroll data, while ADP says businesses can switch at any time of year. Neither statement guarantees that a particular company’s transition will be seamless. Ask each provider what data it will transfer, what you must supply, who checks the setup, and how it coordinates the first payroll and tax filings. Confirm responsibilities and timing in writing before setting a changeover date.

- If having payroll, tax filing, HR, benefits, and optional tools described together is important, compare Gusto’s plan-level inclusions and add-on costs with your requirements.
- If your accounting workflow is built around QuickBooks, ask about QuickBooks Workforce’s current product details and whether its integration supports the way you work.
- If you want to assemble payroll and HR capabilities à la carte, get an itemized Paychex Flex quote and compare it with complete quotes from other providers.
- If you are evaluating OnPay, SurePayroll, or Rippling, use the same checklist and obtain current first-party details before treating any advertised capability as included.
ADP’s guide includes favorable ADP survey results and customer testimonials, but those are ADP-published marketing material, not independent comparative evidence. They do not establish which alternative will work best for a different business.
