Before moving your banking, check how the account works, what it costs, which everyday services it includes, how eligible deposits are protected and how the switch will affect your regular payments. Islamic current and savings accounts can use different structures, and the provider’s agreement—not the account label alone—sets the terms.
Understand how the account works
Current accounts
A Sharia-compliant current account does not pay interest. One structure is qard: your deposit is treated as an interest-free loan to the bank, which may use the funds in its operations. Read the account agreement to see how deposits are held, how you can access them and what the bank may do with the funds. The Bank of England explains Islamic finance, including common account structures.
Savings accounts
A savings account may invest deposits in Sharia-compliant activities and return a share of any profit. Examples include wakalah, where the bank acts as an agent, and murabahah, a commodity purchase-and-resale structure. MoneyHelper describes the advertised return as an “expected profit rate,” not an annual interest rate. An expected rate is not automatically guaranteed: check what the contract says about calculation, payment frequency and whether the return is expected or guaranteed.
Compare the rate alongside the conditions that affect access and returns: minimum balance, notice period or fixed term, and any consequences for withdrawing early. MoneyHelper’s guide to Sharia-compliant savings also lists providers, but availability and product terms can change.

Check Sharia oversight and product disclosures
Look for the named Sharia Supervisory Board or adviser, published governance information and product documentation. Check whether the oversight applies to the specific account and the investment activity behind it, rather than assuming a bank-wide statement answers every product question.
Oversight arrangements vary by provider. For example, AUB’s 2024 conversion materials described an independent Sharia Supervisory Board made up of experts in Islamic law and finance, with responsibility for reviewing products, services and activities. Treat that as a dated provider example, not a description of all Islamic banks. Review the selected provider’s current disclosures and account terms.

Compare everyday banking features
Sharia compliance does not by itself tell you whether an account suits your day-to-day banking. Compare the actual service and tariff for the specific account.
- Eligibility: check residency, identity verification, credit checks, minimum balance and any product-specific conditions.
- Costs: compare account fees and charges for the services you expect to use.
- Payments and access: check card availability, transfers, payment limits and cut-off times, cash deposits and withdrawals, app and branch access, customer support and statement options.
- Shortfalls and overdrafts: ask whether an arranged overdraft is offered, what happens if a payment would take you below zero, and how missed payments are handled. Do not assume there is an overdraft or equivalent buffer.
The FCA’s payment-account rules aim to improve fee transparency and set minimum standards for switching accounts within their scope. Read the provider’s current tariff and account terms; not every banking product or customer necessarily falls within every switching protection. See the FCA’s Payment Accounts Regulations information.

Check deposit protection and the banking group
For eligible deposits, FSCS protection is up to £120,000 per person per PRA-authorised firm for failures from 1 December 2025. The limit is aggregated across accounts with the firm, including brands that share its banking authorisation; it is not a separate allowance for each account or brand. Check the legal entity named in the account documents and whether other banks or brands where you hold deposits share that authorisation.
The FSCS says repayment is made within seven working days in most bank-failure cases. Eligibility has exceptions, and complex ownership arrangements may be treated differently. Check the FSCS deposit-protection guidance for the rules that apply to your circumstances.

Plan the switch before moving income and payments
- Open the new account and confirm it is usable. Make sure you can access the account and its payment services before redirecting income or bills.
- Make a payment inventory. Include salary, benefits, direct debits, standing orders, card subscriptions, linked savings and any overdraft balance or other borrowing.
- Ask what the switching service covers. Confirm whether the account is eligible, which payments and balances will transfer, the scheduled switch date, and how failed or misdirected payments are handled.
- Coordinate any borrowing or shortfall. Agree how an existing overdraft or other balance will be dealt with, and make sure important payments can still be met under the new account’s terms.
- Check payments after the switch. Review incoming payments and bills around the changeover and contact the payer or provider if anything has not moved as expected.
FCA rules set minimum switching standards for covered payment accounts, but the precise service and eligibility should be confirmed with both providers. The FCA’s payment-account rules overview describes the scope and purpose of those rules.

You do not have to be Muslim to use Islamic finance products and services, according to the Bank of England. You still need to meet the provider’s usual identity, residency, credit, balance and account-specific requirements.

Use the same checklist to compare providers
When weighing up accounts, compare the terms that affect both religious compliance and practical use:
- Account structure and the provider’s Sharia governance disclosures.
- How and when you can access current-account funds or savings, including notice, fixed-term and early-withdrawal conditions.
- Expected profit rate and its calculation and payment terms, where relevant.
- Fees, minimum opening or ongoing balance, and payment, card, cash and digital-service features.
- Overdraft availability and what happens when a payment cannot be covered.
- Eligibility requirements, the legal entity holding deposits and how FSCS limits aggregate across its brands.
Use the current account agreement and tariff for specific product facts. A provider listing or a general description of Islamic banking cannot establish today’s fees, eligibility or service features for an individual account.
