Start with the exact games you need, then verify that those games are live in your country and local market, available on your actual screen, included in the plan, and affordable after add-ons and renewal charges. Sports rights are split across broadcasters and services, so a service associated with your league may still miss the games that matter to you.
Use the checklist below before entering payment details. It is designed to prevent the most expensive mistake: paying for a service that technically carries your sport but cannot show your team’s game live on your television.

1. List the games before you compare services
Create a short must-watch list before looking at plans. Include the sport, team or athlete, competition, season, and specific games or event stages you cannot miss. Separate must-watch games from occasional interests; that distinction determines whether one subscription is enough or whether you would be paying for a second service unnecessarily.
Check the rights holder’s schedule for your market
Use the league or broadcaster’s current schedule and rights information for your country and, where relevant, your local market. Rights can be divided among local broadcasters, national networks, league packages and event-specific services. In the United States, for example, the NFL’s access guide lists regular-season games across local broadcasters, ESPN and ABC, Amazon Prime Video, NFL Network, YouTube, Netflix and Sunday Ticket, with access depending on location and subscription: NFL access guide.

Record the source that carries each must-watch game. A league logo on a service’s homepage is not proof that every game, playoff round or local broadcast is included.
Make a rights worksheet
- Event: the exact game, match, race or tournament round.
- Date and start time: include the time zone.
- Live outlet: the broadcaster or service named by the current schedule.
- Replay timing: when a replay becomes available if live viewing is restricted.
- Market note: local, national, international or location-dependent.
Save the schedule page or note the date you checked it. Rights and schedules change during a season, and an answer that was correct last year may not apply to the next one.
2. Confirm that the game is actually live and check blackouts
A plan can include a game’s replay, highlights or radio feed while excluding the live broadcast. Look for an explicit live designation for every must-watch event. Ask whether local games, nationally televised games, playoffs, finals or special events are delayed or excluded.

Understand local and national blackouts
Blackouts can apply even when your subscription is active. NBA League Pass, for example, publishes blackout rules for the United States and Canada and separate rules by country and event in its League Pass Blackout Guide. The guide states that certain U.S. nationally broadcast games become available at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time the next day, while locally broadcast blackouts can make the replay available three days after the local broadcast. Treat those timings as the NBA’s stated rules for the applicable markets and events, not as a general rule for every sport.
ESPN likewise says blackout decisions can depend on the location from which you access the service and on the relevant league’s policy for third-party league content. Its current explanation is in the ESPN blackout policy.

Find the alternative outlet before paying
If a game is blacked out, identify where it is legally shown live in your market and whether you already pay for that outlet through a television or streaming package. A cheap league package can become the expensive option if a second subscription is required for local or nationally televised games.
3. Verify country, local market and current location rules
Availability is determined by more than your billing address. Services may use your current device location or IP address to decide which games are available. The NBA says blackout determination can use device location and IP information and can change when your viewing location changes. ESPN also requires location access and uses location verification in its blackout rules.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check eligibility while physically in the place where you will watch. A plan that works at home may show a different catalog while you travel, attend school in another region or use a mobile connection across a market boundary.
- Confirm the country in which the subscription is sold.
- Check whether local-market restrictions apply to your team.
- Ask how travel or a change of viewing location affects live access.
- Do not assume that changing location settings or using a VPN is an authorized way around rights restrictions; it may violate service terms and can cause verification failures.
4. Check the exact screen and whether live viewing works on it
Finding an app in your television’s app store is only the first test. Confirm that the live event, not merely replays, works on the device you intend to use. Read the service’s device-support page and check your exact operating system, model family and country.
Why device support can be misleading
NFL+ illustrates the distinction. NFL support says live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games are available only on phones and tablets under the relevant subscription, and games limited to those devices may not be cast. Replays are available on connected TVs. The service’s device explanation is here: NFL mobile, computer and television guide.

That means a television app or a phone-to-TV casting function does not automatically provide live television access. Test the specific event type you plan to watch.
Check supported platforms and casting limits
The NBA’s FAQ lists iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV or Fire Stick, with Roku and consoles available only in select countries. See the current NBA League Pass FAQ for the country-specific list. Compatibility with one service does not establish compatibility with another, and support can differ by app version.
If your television lacks the required app, a compatible streaming device may solve the app-availability problem, but it cannot remove a league blackout or a plan’s mobile-only live restriction. Confirm the target service’s own device list before buying an accessory.
5. Compare household features, not just the headline plan
Two plans with similar prices can have very different practical value. Compare the features that affect how your household watches.
| Feature | Questions to ask | Why it affects value |
|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous streams | How many devices can play at once, and are they required to be in one household? | A single-stream plan may not work when two people watch different games. |
| Ads | Are live broadcasts, replays or premium feeds ad-supported? | A higher tier may reduce ads but still not remove them from the live feed. |
| Replays | When do replays appear after a blackout or live broadcast? How long do they remain? | Delayed access is not equivalent to live access if you follow scores or participate in live discussion. |
| Downloads | Are downloads available, on which devices, and for how long? | Downloads may help travel, but they do not solve a live-rights restriction. |
| Alternate feeds | Does the plan include home, away, language or data-focused feeds? | These features can justify a premium tier only if you will use them. |
| Multiview | Is multiview included, and does it work on your television platform? | A feature listed on the service page may be unavailable on some devices or markets. |
The NBA FAQ states that standard League Pass permits one device at a time, while Premium permits up to three simultaneous devices. Those are NBA plan and market-specific terms, not a universal standard for sports subscriptions.

6. Calculate the real cost for the season
Use the cost of obtaining your must-watch games, not the lowest advertised monthly number. Compare monthly, seasonal and annual billing where offered, and include every required add-on.
Build a total-cost calculation
- Write the subscription price and billing frequency shown for your country.
- Multiply a monthly plan by the number of months you realistically need it.
- Add a second service or event pass if any must-watch game is unavailable on the first service.
- Add a television-provider package if live viewing requires authentication through that provider.
- Include taxes or mandatory fees shown at checkout.
- Subtract only discounts you can actually use; do not treat a short promotion as the recurring price.
Prices vary by package and region. The NBA directs customers to check pricing in their own market rather than relying on one captured price. NFL guidance also notes that live games on connected television or desktop can require signing in with a cable or streaming provider. Verify the final checkout total and the authentication requirement before subscribing.
Compare effective cost per must-watch game
Divide the season’s total cost by the number of must-watch live games the plan actually delivers in your location. This is not a quality score; it simply exposes a low monthly price that covers very few of the events you care about. A plan with fewer games may still be sensible if you value its replays or other features, but make that a deliberate choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Read renewal and cancellation terms before checkout
Many sports plans renew automatically, and a season-long subscription can renew for another season unless you cancel in time. Find the renewal date, notice period, cancellation deadline and refund policy before entering payment details.
Cancel through the channel where you subscribed
NBA guidance says cancellation must occur before the next billing event and directs subscribers to cancel on NBA.com or through the relevant app store, depending on the purchase channel. A subscription bought through an app store may not be cancellable from the service’s website. Save the confirmation email or cancellation screen.

Match the billing term to your viewing calendar
Monthly billing offers flexibility but can cost more over a full season. Season-long or annual billing can reduce interruptions but creates a larger commitment and a renewal risk. Put the cancellation deadline on your calendar immediately after subscribing, especially when the service describes renewal notices for season billing.
8. Use one comparison table for every viable option
After checking rights and your market, fill in the same fields for each remaining service. A blank or “not stated” cell is a reason to verify the terms, not permission to assume the best case.
| Comparison field | Service A | Service B |
|---|---|---|
| Must-watch games available live | List each event and market | List each event and market |
| Local and national blackouts | State exclusions and replay delay | State exclusions and replay delay |
| Country and local-market eligibility | Record the rule and date checked | Record the rule and date checked |
| Television, streaming device and browser support | Confirm the exact model and live-event support | Confirm the exact model and live-event support |
| Casting or mobile-only limits | State any restriction | State any restriction |
| Concurrent streams | State the plan limit | State the plan limit |
| Replays, downloads, alternate feeds and multiview | List only included features | List only included features |
| Total cost for your intended season | Include add-ons and authentication | Include add-ons and authentication |
| Renewal and cancellation | Record renewal date and cancellation channel | Record renewal date and cancellation channel |
Do not score an option until every must-watch event has a live-availability answer. If a provider cannot state a blackout rule, device restriction or renewal term clearly, treat that uncertainty as a cost and service risk.

10. Common mistakes and how to recover
You bought a league package but the local game is blacked out
Check the league’s blackout guide and identify the local or national broadcaster carrying the live event. Do not buy another package until you know whether your existing television or streaming plan already authenticates access.
The app works on your TV but the live game does not
Check whether the plan limits live viewing to phones or tablets, whether casting is prohibited and whether the event is replay-only on connected TVs. If the service permits cancellation, follow the channel-specific instructions before the next billing event.
A second household member cannot watch
Check the plan’s simultaneous-stream limit and household rules. Upgrading may be worthwhile only when the additional access costs less than maintaining a second subscription.
You are charged after you thought you cancelled
Locate the original purchase channel, verify the cancellation timestamp and contact that platform with the confirmation record. Cancellation made after the renewal event may not reverse the charge, depending on the stated terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line: pay only after four answers are clear
Subscribe only when you can answer “yes” to all four questions: Does the plan carry my must-watch games live in my market? Can I watch those live events on my actual screen without an unapproved workaround? Does the plan’s stream limit and feature set fit my household? Have I calculated the full seasonal cost and recorded the renewal and cancellation date? If any answer is uncertain, keep the money in your account until the provider or rights holder clarifies it.
