Live Sports Streaming Services Compared: Choose by League, Price, Local Coverage, and Devices (2026)

The best sports streaming service depends on your games and market. Learn how to compare league rights, local and out-of-market coverage, real recurring costs, blackouts and device compatibility.

The best live-sports streaming service is the one that carries the specific games you watch in your ZIP code at a sustainable recurring price. Start with your leagues and teams, separate local, national, and out-of-market rights, then verify blackouts, channels, device support, and simultaneous-stream limits. No single subscription reliably includes every major league game.

What is the best streaming service for live sports?

There is no universal winner. Sports rights are divided among league services, broadcast networks, national cable channels, regional sports networks (RSNs), and live-TV bundles. The right choice depends on the games you actually watch rather than on a broad “best sports service” ranking.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use this order when comparing services:

  1. List the leagues, teams, and events you follow. Include regular-season games, playoffs, championship events, and special games.
  2. Classify each game as local, national, or out-of-market. A service that carries a national broadcast may not carry your local team’s regional feed, and an out-of-market package may exclude games in your home territory.
  3. Check your home ZIP code. Local affiliates and RSNs vary by market. A channel advertised nationally may not be available at your address.
  4. Add the actual recurring cost. Include required add-ons, seasonal subscriptions, and the price after any introductory promotion.
  5. Confirm the exact device and stream rules. An app may work on one television model but not another, and simultaneous-screen limits can affect a household’s value.

This process usually produces a combination of services rather than one subscription. For example, a football fan could need a local broadcast route, a national-game service, and an out-of-market package for Sunday afternoon games.

Why sports streaming rights are fragmented

Leagues sell different packages to different partners. The NFL’s official viewing guidance identifies separate routes through NFL+, CBS/Paramount+, ESPN, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube or YouTube TV. That list is not a promise that any one service carries all NFL games; it illustrates how a single league’s schedule can be split across several outlets.

Rights can also differ by geography and game window. A local affiliate may show a game in the team’s home market while a national network shows another game elsewhere. An out-of-market package can provide games unavailable on local television, yet still exclude local games because of territorial restrictions. Postseason and special-event rights may follow different rules from regular-season games.

The Federal Communications Commission’s March 4, 2026 notice describes major league media-rights arrangements involving broadcast, streaming, and league direct-to-consumer services. Treat those arrangements as a reason to verify the current schedule, not as a substitute for checking a particular game.

Which streaming service has the league or team games you want?

Use the league’s current “where to watch” information first, then test the candidate service against your market and device. The following examples show how the main categories fit together.

NFL: local, national, and out-of-market routes

What you want to watch Route identified in current NFL guidance Important limitation
Local and primetime games on a phone or tablet NFL+ NFL+ describes live local and primetime games on mobile; this is not the same as complete TV-connected coverage.
NFL Network, RedZone, replays, audio, and on-demand features NFL+ or NFL+ Premium, depending on the feature Check the current feature list and whether the device you use is eligible.
Local CBS games Local CBS coverage, including the route identified by the NFL as Paramount+ Availability is market- and schedule-dependent.
Sunday Night Football NBC or Peacock Verify the current plan and local availability before subscribing.
Thursday Night Football Amazon Prime Video Requires the applicable Prime Video access.
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV This is a separate out-of-market package; it does not turn every other NFL window into one subscription.

NFL support’s price page, updated January 27, 2026, lists NFL+ at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year and NFL+ Premium at $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year. The service is U.S.-only and unavailable in U.S. territories. Those prices are service-page figures for that date, so check checkout for current terms.

YouTube TV’s help information says its base plan includes many nationally and locally carried games, while NFL Sunday Ticket adds out-of-market Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games. If “every game” is your goal, map the schedule to each right instead of assuming that NFL+, a regular live-TV package, or Sunday Ticket alone is comprehensive.

MLB: league packages versus team and regional services

MLB’s 2026 package page lists MLB.TV, MLB+, and market-specific options including Detroit Sportsnet, SNLA+, SNY, and MASN+. SNLA+ is described as streaming more than 140 Dodgers games in the team’s home television territory. The same page notes national exclusivities and other conditions for certain offerings.

That distinction matters for a local fan. A league package may be strongest for out-of-market games, while a team or regional service may be the relevant option inside the team’s home territory. Territorial eligibility and national exclusivity can remove games you expected to receive, so check the specific team, ZIP code, and game date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A February 10, 2026 Associated Press report listed seasonal MLB.TV pricing of $149.99 for non-ESPN Unlimited subscribers, $134.99 for ESPN Unlimited subscribers, or $29.99 per month, with a free month of ESPN Unlimited under the described offer. This is dated secondary reporting and promotional pricing may change; verify the current official checkout page.

Can you watch local games without cable?

Often, but not automatically. Local access depends on your home market, the station carrying the game, the service’s affiliate agreements, and any blackout or exclusivity rule.

  • Identify the local station or RSN first. Search the league schedule for the game’s designated broadcaster, then see whether that channel appears in the service’s ZIP-specific lineup.
  • Distinguish local from out-of-market. An out-of-market package is designed for games outside your home territory and may intentionally block your local team’s games.
  • Check national exclusivity. A game may be removed from a team package because it is carried nationally elsewhere.
  • Recheck before opening day or playoffs. Rights, channels, promotions, and local agreements can change during a season.

YouTube TV specifically directs customers to check regional availability by ZIP code for local affiliates and RSNs. MLB’s listed team services likewise include territorial and national-exclusivity conditions. Do not rely on a national channel list without entering your address.

Compare service types before comparing brands

Service type Best fit Questions to ask Typical limitation
League or team subscription Fans who follow one league or club, especially out of market Are local games blacked out? Are national games excluded? Is the package seasonal or monthly? May not include local or nationally exclusive games.
Broad live-TV bundle Households needing several national networks, local affiliates, and general entertainment Are the required channels in your ZIP code? What is the post-promotion price? Are RSNs included? Higher recurring cost and possible add-on fees.
Single-network or event service Viewers who need one specific game window or network Does it carry the local feed, and does the app work on your television? Coverage is narrow and may not solve the rest of the schedule.
Mobile-focused league service Viewers who primarily watch on a supported phone or tablet Are TV-connected devices allowed? How many live windows and replays are included? Mobile availability may not equal living-room availability.

Hulu + Live TV as a detailed comparison example

The Hulu page reviewed showed an ad-supported Live TV promotion of $49.99 for the first month, followed by a regular price of $99.99 per month. Its premium option displayed $109.99 per month. The page advertised more than 100 live channels, sports access, Disney+ and ESPN Select components, and unlimited DVR. Promotions and terms can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its listed sports availability included college football and NFL coverage through ESPN, ABC, BTN, FOX, FS1, CBS, ACC Network, SEC Network, NFL Network, and other channels. Local availability varies, so those channel names do not guarantee that every affiliate or RSN is available at your address.

Hulu states that two simultaneous streams are included by default. Its Unlimited Screens add-on allows unlimited screens at home and three on the go. Compare that rule with the number of people who watch at the same time; a cheaper plan can become poor value if the household immediately needs an add-on.

Devices listed for Hulu

The reviewed Hulu page listed support for Apple and Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, web browsers on Mac and PC, selected LG and Samsung televisions, Nintendo Switch, Roku, Xbox, Android TV, PlayStation 4 and 5, and selected Vizio models. Device support is model-specific and can change. Check Hulu’s current compatibility list before subscribing, especially for an older smart TV.

How to compare price honestly

Use the recurring cost after the promotion, not the teaser displayed on the landing page. Write down each required service and calculate the cost for the period you will actually watch.

Cost item What to record
Base subscription Current monthly or annual price after the introductory period.
Required add-ons Sports tiers, extra screens, premium channels, or regional packages needed for your games.
Seasonal package League or team subscription price and whether paying annually is cheaper for your viewing period.
Promotion conditions First-month price, eligibility, auto-renewal date, and the standard rate that follows.
Switching cost Early cancellation rules, equipment charges, or a missed promotional window.

For the Hulu example, a first month at $49.99 followed by $99.99 monthly is not a $49.99 service. For NFL+, compare $49.99 annually with twelve months at $6.99, while remembering that the cheaper annual option still has the service’s mobile and coverage limits. For MLB.TV, compare the seasonal price with the number of months you would otherwise pay monthly, then account for blackouts.

Device and household checks

Before paying, make a device checklist:

  • Television: Identify the exact operating system and model year, not merely the manufacturer.
  • Streaming player: Confirm that the app is available in its current app store.
  • Mobile use: Check whether a league service permits live viewing on phones and tablets and whether casting is supported.
  • Computer: Verify supported browsers and whether your browser blocks required playback features.
  • Simultaneous streams: Match the allowance to the number of people watching at home and away.
  • Network capacity: A compatible device still needs a stable connection for high-definition live video.

Do not buy hardware automatically. If your television already supports the needed app, an additional streaming device may add cost without improving coverage. An HDMI cable is useful when connecting a computer directly to a television, but it is unnecessary for most app-based setups.

A practical decision procedure

  1. Create a game list. Write the teams, leagues, preferred games, and whether you need regular season, playoffs, or both.
  2. Mark each game’s distribution. Label it local, national, or out of market and record the announced network or league service.
  3. Check official league guidance. Use the current schedule and “where to watch” information rather than an old comparison article.
  4. Enter your ZIP code on each candidate service. Confirm local stations, RSNs, and territorial restrictions.
  5. Build the minimum combination. Add only the services required for the games on your list; do not pay for a broad bundle that does not solve a coverage gap.
  6. Calculate the post-promotion total. Include add-ons and annual or seasonal charges, then compare the total for the months you will watch.
  7. Test device fit. Confirm the exact television, player, phone, tablet, browser, and stream limit.
  8. Record cancellation dates. Put the end of a season or promotional period on your calendar so an unwanted renewal does not become part of the cost.

Common failure points and fixes

“The channel list says my game is included, but I cannot see it.”

Check your ZIP-specific lineup and whether the game is subject to a local blackout or national exclusivity. Then verify the game’s date, start time, and alternate broadcaster.

“I subscribed to a league package and local games are missing.”

That can be an intentional home-territory restriction. Look for the team’s regional service or local broadcaster instead of assuming the league package is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The advertised price doubled after signup.”

Review the promotion’s end date and regular rate. Compare the recurring price, not the first billing cycle, before deciding whether the service fits your budget.

“The app works on my phone but not my television.”

Mobile and TV-connected rights can differ. Check the service’s supported-device list for the exact television model, then use a supported streaming player or browser-to-TV connection only if the service permits it.

“Two people cannot watch at once.”

Check the plan’s simultaneous-stream allowance. Hulu, for example, states two streams by default and offers a separate Unlimited Screens add-on with different home and away limits.

Decision examples

You follow one NFL team in its home market

Start with the local affiliate and the team’s schedule. Add a live-TV bundle only if it carries the required local and national channels in your ZIP code. NFL+ may help for mobile local and primetime viewing, but it is not a replacement for every TV-connected window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You live outside your favorite NFL team’s market

Check whether the Sunday afternoon games are available through NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV. Separately account for Thursday night, Sunday night, Monday night, and any local games, because those windows follow different rights.

You follow an MLB team from another state

Compare MLB.TV with the team’s listed regional service. Confirm that your location is outside the team’s home territory and check national exclusivity before paying for a full season.

Your household watches several sports and local news

A broad live-TV bundle may reduce the number of separate subscriptions if its ZIP-specific lineup includes the necessary affiliates, national networks, and RSNs. Calculate the post-promotion price and stream limit against the cost of assembling league services individually.

Final checklist before subscribing

  • Have you named the exact teams, leagues, and games?
  • Did you identify local, national, and out-of-market status?
  • Did you enter your home ZIP code and review blackout language?
  • Did you check postseason and special-event rights?
  • Did you calculate the recurring price after the promotion?
  • Did you include add-ons, seasonal fees, and extra-screen costs?
  • Does the exact TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, or browser support the service?
  • Does the simultaneous-stream allowance fit your household?
  • Do you know when the promotion or season ends so you can cancel or reassess?

Recheck official checkout pages, channel lists, device support, and ZIP-code tools immediately before purchase. Prices, rights, local affiliates, RSNs, promotions, and blackout rules are volatile, and a service that fits one market or season may not fit the next.
