A GIFT City account is not one standard product: it may give access to unsponsored depositary receipts, international investments through a Global Access Provider, or units in a managed fund. Those are different legal and service arrangements, with different costs and terms.
First check your residency status and funding route
If you are resident in India, confirm that your investor category can use the particular product and that the proposed remittance is permitted under the applicable FEMA framework. IFSCA’s portfolio-manager rule says an individual resident in India must be eligible under FEMA and is limited to the amount allowed under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). The applicable limit and your remaining allowance depend on current rules and your own remittance history; check both with your bank and provider before sending money.
Ask the provider and remitting bank to confirm in writing which remittance purpose and documents apply, how much of your annual allowance the transfer uses, and how existing overseas remittances are counted. RBI material describing permissions is not a substitute for checking current directions with your bank. Do not assume that a provider’s reference to LRS establishes your personal eligibility or available balance.
Find out what you will legally own
“U.S. stocks” can describe exposure to U.S.-listed companies without meaning that you hold the companies’ shares directly in a U.S. brokerage account. Ask for the precise instrument, its issuer, where it is recorded, and who holds the underlying asset. Get the answer in the account documents, not just in a product summary.
| Route | What the cited provider describes | Questions to resolve before opening |
|---|---|---|
| NSE IFSC Receipts | Anand Rathi describes unsponsored depositary receipts based on selected U.S.-listed shares, listed and settled in GIFT City. Its product description refers to a demat account and corporate-action handling. | Which underlying shares and receipt issuer or custodian are involved? How does each receipt relate to the underlying share? How are voting and other corporate actions handled? What are the fractional-unit, transfer, exit, and fee rules? |
| Global Access Provider route | Geojit describes an introducing-broker model: it introduces clients to Global Access Providers and says it does not itself execute, clear, settle, or custody those investments. | What is the legal name and jurisdiction of each firm in the chain? Do you acquire shares directly or another instrument? Where is the account held and in whose name? Which assets and order types are available, and how do funding, withdrawals, statements, tax records, and disputes work? |
| Managed fund | DSP describes a global-equity product through an IFSC retail FME and currently states that it is available only to HDFC bank account holders. That is a provider-specific availability statement, not a general rule for IFSC funds. | Is the fund currently open to your investor category? What is its portfolio and benchmark? What are the fund and underlying costs, dealing and redemption terms, and applicable fund and investor tax treatment? |
These descriptions come from provider materials and can change. Verify the live product terms and availability directly before applying. Do not treat a receipt, brokerage-held share, ETF, or fund unit as interchangeable: the instrument affects what rights you have and which documents govern the investment.
#1 Best Overall
Map the firms that execute, settle, and hold assets
Ask the provider to draw or name the full service chain. Depending on the route, the entities may include an introducing broker, Global Access Provider, execution broker, custodian, clearing and settlement firms, an international partner, receipt issuer, or fund manager. For each, record its legal name, jurisdiction, role, and the agreement that governs its relationship with you.
Geojit’s description is a useful reminder that the brand through which you begin an application may not be the firm executing trades or holding assets. Do not infer from an account’s GIFT City branding that the account, custody, or dispute process is located there. Confirm the recordkeeping account, account title, custody location, and the party responsible for statements and error resolution.

- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Calculate the full cost for a realistic transaction
Request the current tariff and calculate a complete buy, holding, dividend, and sale scenario using the amount and instrument you expect to use. Include every applicable layer rather than comparing headline brokerage alone:
- Currency conversion, bank and remittance costs.
- Brokerage, exchange, regulatory, clearing, settlement, and pass-through charges.
- Custody, demat, account-maintenance, or other account fees.
- Fund expenses and underlying investment costs, if using a managed fund.
- Any costs connected with dividends, corporate actions, transfers, or withdrawals.
Ask how charges are calculated, in which currency they are collected, and whether they recur. Provider pages and tariffs are date-sensitive; a fee or instrument list shown at application time may differ from an older description. Obtain the current schedule and save a copy with the account documents.

Check product availability, dealing rules, and onboarding requirements
Confirm the current list of available instruments and the rules for placing and exiting orders. Ask whether fractional units are supported, what order types are accepted, when trades can be placed, and what happens if an instrument is suspended or no longer offered. The cited provider descriptions do not establish a universal list or common dealing rules across these routes.
Get the exact KYC checklist for your own investor category. Anand Rathi’s receipt-onboarding page lists PAN, masked Aadhaar, bank proof, signature, nominee PAN, and a W-8BEN form. Treat that as an example of one provider’s stated requirements, not a checklist for every GIFT City account; other products, providers, and customer categories may differ.

- How are dividends, corporate actions, and other investor notices processed?
- What statements and tax-reporting support will you receive, and from which entity?
- How do withdrawals and transfers work, and what timelines or restrictions apply?
- Who handles an error, complaint, or dispute, and what regulator complaint route applies?
- What terms govern custody and customer assets, including what happens if a provider or other entity in the service chain becomes insolvent?
The cited provider and regulatory descriptions do not establish your individual tax outcome or the insolvency and investor-asset protections attached to a particular account. Those depend on the product, legal ownership, custody chain, investor residence, and current documents. Exchange-level descriptions of taxes or transaction fees do not determine your personal income-tax position. For cross-border tax, reporting, or estate questions, consult an appropriately qualified adviser rather than relying on a provider’s general marketing language.

A practical pre-opening sequence
- Confirm eligibility. Establish your FEMA/residency status and investor category, then ask the provider whether the exact product accepts you.
- Confirm funding capacity. Ask your bank and provider about the applicable remittance purpose, required documents, current LRS rules, and how existing transfers affect your remaining allowance.
- Name the instrument and asset holder. Obtain written confirmation of whether you will hold a share, depositary receipt, ETF, or fund unit; identify its issuer, recordkeeping account, and underlying-asset holder.
- Identify every service provider. Record the legal names, jurisdictions, and responsibilities of the introducing firm, broker, access provider, custodian, clearing and settlement entities, and any international partner.
- Price the whole lifecycle. Use the current tariff to calculate a representative buy, hold, dividend, and sale, including currency, bank, trading, custody, settlement, and fund charges where applicable.
- Verify operations and protection terms. Review KYC, dealing and exit rules, statements, tax documents, withdrawals, complaint handling, and custody terms before transferring funds.
A product is not fully understood until you can explain both what you own and which entity is responsible at each step. If the provider cannot document that clearly, pause the application and resolve the gaps before remitting.
