A discount label by itself does not establish that the price is a bargain. The checks that matter most then depend on the product: on-road cost and service access for a two-wheeler; dimensions, weight and construction for a suitcase; and capacity, installation and running costs for an appliance.
Start with the deal, not the discount label
A sale offer is useful only if the item suits your needs and the terms work for you. First identify the precise product being advertised: brand, model, variant, size or capacity, and any included accessories. Similar-looking products can have different specifications or contents, so a discount shown for one configuration may not apply to another.

Compare the final amount payable
Write down the amount you would actually pay, including relevant delivery, installation, registration or other fees. For a two-wheeler, compare the full on-road amount rather than a headline price. For an appliance, check whether delivery and installation cost extra. An online checkout or in-store quote may add charges after the advertised price; ask for the breakdown before committing.

For packaged goods, do not pay above the printed MRP. The Department of Consumer Affairs’ Consumer Handbook, “Tips for Smart Consumers”, advises checking the condition of goods, reviewing refund, replacement and warranty or guarantee terms, avoiding payment above MRP and keeping the receipt.
Read the terms before you pay
Check the seller’s written return, refund or replacement policy and the manufacturer’s warranty or guarantee terms. Look for the time limit, conditions, exclusions, process and who to contact. A seller’s return policy and a manufacturer’s warranty are not the same thing: one may govern whether a retailer will accept a return, while the other sets out the manufacturer’s coverage. Do not assume that a sale item has the same return options as another listing, or that a warranty covers every fault or cost.
If buying online, read the information on the specific product and seller listing, including payment and delivery details. Save a screenshot or copy of the listing, offer conditions and relevant policy text before it changes.
Use a common checklist for every category
Consumer Affairs guidance treats safety, information and choice as consumer rights. The Department says, “Consumer should insist on getting all the information about the product or service before making a choice or a decision.” Read the Department of Consumer Affairs’ consumer-rights guidance and ask the seller for missing information before deciding.
- Match the offer to the item. Confirm that the exact model, variant, size or capacity and included items match what you intend to buy. Similar product names or pictures are not enough.
- Check the condition. In store, inspect the product. On delivery, check it before accepting it where the delivery process allows. Look for damage, tampering, missing accessories or anything inconsistent with a new item or its listing. Examine the packaging as well as the product.
- Confirm the paperwork. Match the item’s identifying details to the invoice or bill and keep proof of payment. Retain warranty or guarantee documents and any written terms that affected your decision.
- Resolve uncertainty before purchase. Ask whether a displayed or delivered item is new, what accessories are included, and how damage or a mismatch will be handled. If the answer is material, get it in writing rather than relying on an informal assurance.
For packaged products, read the printed details and look for damaged or tampered packaging. If the item or packaging does not match the offer or appears damaged, raise the issue before accepting it and keep a record of the seller’s response.
A simple way to compare two offers
Put the offers side by side rather than comparing the largest discount percentage. Record five things for each: the total payable price and offer conditions; the exact model or variant and relevant specifications; the item’s condition and included accessories; warranty coverage and access to service; and the written return or replacement terms. If one offer is cheaper because it excludes installation, accessories or another service you need, account for that difference before deciding.

Weight those factors according to the purchase. For a vehicle, routine use and access to service may matter more than a small price difference. For a suitcase, dimensions, weight and durability are central. For an appliance, capacity, installation and the features that affect use and running costs may outweigh a headline discount. There is no single feature or checklist that establishes the best choice for every buyer.

Two-wheeler: check the variant, on-road cost and service plan
A two-wheeler’s sale price is only one part of its cost. The right choice depends on the exact variant and how you will use it, as well as the amount payable to get it on the road and the service available where you live.
Verify the configuration and itemized price
- Confirm the exact model and variant, and which accessories or offer benefits are actually included.
- Ask for an itemized final on-road amount. Check the registration-related charges and any fees, accessories or other additions shown in the quote rather than comparing only the advertised vehicle price.
- Check that the vehicle delivered matches the variant on the invoice and that its condition is consistent with the sale and the seller’s description.
Match specifications to your use
Consider practical requirements such as engine or motor type, range or efficiency claims where relevant, load, comfort, safety equipment and storage. Decide which of these affect your regular journeys and compare the exact variants on those points. A feature list or a higher-priced variant does not establish that it is the better fit for your needs.
Think through your ordinary use before comparing models: the journeys you make, the load you expect to carry, and the comfort and storage you need. For an electric model, pay attention to the range claim and whether it suits your use; for other models, consider the relevant efficiency claim. Treat these as comparison points, not guarantees of the performance you will get in every circumstance. Ask the seller to clarify specifications that are not stated clearly in the offer.
Check service and documents
Read the written warranty, including exclusions, and the service schedule. Check whether an authorized service option is accessible from where you live. Before paying, clarify which documents will be provided and who is responsible for registration-related steps.
Buying used requires a separate, more specific assessment of title, service history and condition. The general consumer guidance cited here does not provide a vehicle-specific inspection procedure, so these prompts should not be treated as a government-prescribed inspection or as a substitute for a qualified assessment of a particular used vehicle.

Suitcase: measure the bag and test its moving parts
A suitcase can look spacious or sturdy in a shop and still be unsuitable for your trip. Compare its own advertised dimensions, capacity and empty weight with your packing needs, and inspect the parts most likely to affect everyday handling.
Check size, weight and construction
- Check the external and internal dimensions, advertised capacity and empty weight. Consider how much space you need and how much the empty bag itself adds to what you will carry.
- Inspect the material and stitching or shell for visible damage or poor condition. Open the case and check its interior and any included compartments or accessories against the listing.
- Move the wheels and handle through their normal range. Check that the zipper runs properly and that any locking features operate as described.
- Ask whether wheels or handles can be replaced and whether repair is practical. Read the written warranty rather than assuming that visible wear or every type of damage is covered.
Check that the size and construction suit the way you expect to use the bag, not just its appearance. If you plan to carry it often, its empty weight and handle and wheel movement are especially relevant. If comparing two sizes, use the stated external and internal dimensions as well as capacity; a capacity figure alone does not show whether the bag will fit your needs.
Check the carrier’s current baggage limits separately
A suitcase’s advertised dimensions are not the same as an airline’s allowance. Check the current carry-on or checked-bag limits for the carrier and route you plan to use; requirements can change. A digital luggage scale is an optional way to weigh a packed bag, not a necessary purchase and not a substitute for checking the carrier’s rules.

Appliance: compare capacity, installation and ongoing use
For an appliance, make sure you are comparing the same model and capacity, then consider whether its features, installation requirements and service arrangements suit the space and purpose you have in mind.
Confirm the model and the full setup cost
- Check the exact model, size or capacity and included accessories on both the offer and the invoice.
- Confirm delivery and installation needs, whether installation is included, and any related fees. Check the conditions that apply to installation before buying.
- Ask how the retailer handles a damaged delivery, a mismatch or a replacement request, and review the written process before paying.
Capacity should match the way you expect to use the appliance; a larger capacity or longer feature list is not automatically better value. Compare features that matter to your use, and include any delivery or installation charges in the comparison. If an installation condition affects the warranty, make sure you understand it before purchase rather than relying on an assumption after delivery.
Assess features and applicable marks
Compare the features that affect your actual use and running costs. Check energy-efficiency or quality marks when they apply to that product category. Not every appliance carries the same mark, and a higher label alone does not prove that a particular model is the right choice. Where relevant, look for product information and quality or guarantee details; the Department’s consumer-rights guidance recommends buying quality-marked products such as ISI or AGMARK where appropriate, not treating either mark as universal to every product.

Check service, warranty and delivery condition
Read the warranty period and exclusions, and check the availability of authorized service where you live. Confirm whether the warranty depends on installation conditions or a particular service process. Inspect the unit and packaging on delivery, and establish that the product is new or clearly described otherwise. If the packaging is damaged or the product does not match, document the issue and use the seller’s stated process before accepting it where possible.

Keep a record of what you bought and what was promised
Save the invoice or bill, payment proof, warranty or guarantee papers, product listing and the offer and policy terms that influenced your decision. A screenshot can preserve online information that may no longer be visible later. Keep notes or messages about any promise that was not reflected in the listing or paperwork.
The National Consumer Helpline recorded 17,71,622 grievances in 2025; 5,11,196, around 29%, related to e-commerce, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs as reported by the Press Information Bureau on 2026-09-10. These are broad grievance figures, not counts of sale-related problems or evidence that a particular seller or sale practice is common. They do show why keeping transaction records can be useful if a dispute arises.

As of 2026-10-13, India’s announced 2026 amendments to the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules have not yet taken effect. A Press Information Bureau release dated 2026-09-10 says they are due to commence on 2027-01-01. The release says the amendments address seller and product information, sponsored listings, price reductions and dark patterns, and specify information including best-before or use-before dates, returns and refunds, warranty, delivery and payment details. Treat this as a future rule change, not a requirement already in force on the date stated here. Check the live listing and written terms for the purchase you are considering.
The release’s grievance figures do not measure sale savings or misleading discounts, nor problems specific to two-wheelers, suitcases or appliances. They cannot establish whether an individual offer is worthwhile; that depends on the item, price, condition and terms.
If there is a problem after purchase
Start with the seller or manufacturer’s documented process, using the invoice, saved listing and any photographs or messages as evidence. For general consumer grievance routes, the National Consumer Helpline’s consumer-rights page lists channels including its online portal, app, UMANG and WhatsApp, and gives helpline number 1915 with operating hours listed as 8am–8pm. Channels and hours can change, so confirm current details on the official page before contacting it.
If the issue concerns a BIS-certified product, BIS says consumers may complain online, through its mobile application or by email. Its consumer-protection page advises including the product name, type, size or grade, source and date of purchase, batch number, and whether the Standard Mark is present. BIS is a route for relevant certification complaints, not a universal channel for every retail dispute.
