Compare the exact configuration you can buy—not just the device name. Check its RAM, built-in storage or SSD capacity, final price, seller, warranty and whether storage can be expanded. Memory shortages can lead manufacturers to raise prices or trim specifications, but the market forecasts do not tell you whether a particular laptop or phone is a good deal today.
As of October 2026, analysts forecast continued supply and cost pressure. That makes it especially important to verify the listing’s details and compare devices with the same specifications. It does not mean every product has less memory or that every device will become more expensive.

Why the exact configuration matters
A product-family name can cover versions with different amounts of RAM and storage, and a listing may advertise a starting configuration rather than the version shown in a photo or review. During a shortage, that gap matters: a manufacturer might offer less RAM or storage than a comparable earlier model, keep the specification and raise the price, or change the mix of configurations it sells.

IDC says some new phones may arrive with lower RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices at the same or a higher price, and expects similar configuration reductions in PCs. TrendForce also reports that PC brands are reducing SSD capacities in mainstream models to lower component costs. These are market-level observations, not a claim about every new device or any particular listing.

For a buyer, the practical unit of comparison is the complete offer: exact model and configuration, price, seller, condition, warranty and included items. A familiar model name or a low starting price is not enough to establish value.
That is why two listings with the same product name may not be equivalent. One could be a version with less RAM or storage; another could be a higher-capacity configuration, or a different offer from a different seller. Even if the product photos look identical, the specification and price attached to the exact model identifier are what matter. A review of an earlier model or a page describing the product family may help you understand the range, but it does not confirm what a particular seller is shipping.
Keep the two kinds of memory separate as you compare. RAM is system memory used while the operating system and applications are running. Storage is where the device keeps files and applications: a laptop usually lists this as SSD capacity, while a phone lists built-in storage. A number for one does not tell you the amount of the other. The market forecasts do not establish a universal minimum for either; what suits you depends on your operating system, applications, workload and intended ownership period.

Analysts describe a tight memory market, but their figures are forecasts about components and device markets, not guaranteed price changes for a particular consumer product. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook says suppliers continued prioritizing advanced-process capacity for server products, leaving the overall DRAM market undersupplied. It projects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% over the same period.
Those are contract-price projections for memory components. They are not predictions that every laptop or phone’s retail price will rise by the same percentage. How a component-cost change affects a retail listing is not established by those figures. A device price also cannot be judged from the projected component increase alone: check the actual offer for the configuration you want.
IDC attributes the shortage in part to rapid demand for AI infrastructure and production capacity shifting toward higher-margin products for AI data centers. It expected 2026 DRAM supply growth of 16% year over year and NAND supply growth of 17%, both below historical norms. Those figures are IDC’s expectations, not measured final-year results. In a later 2026 update, IDC said supply challenges could persist through 2026 and likely well into 2027, with prices remaining elevated; that, too, is a forecast.
The numbers describe different parts of the market. DRAM is used for system memory, while NAND Flash is used in storage products. The TrendForce figures are quarter-over-quarter projections for contract prices in 4Q26; IDC’s 16% and 17% figures are expected supply growth over 2026 compared with the prior year. They are not interchangeable measures, and none supplies a direct price quote for the device in your cart.

Device-shipment and retail-price projections also vary by publisher and publication date. Treat them as scenarios, not observed outcomes:
Rank #2
| Publisher and date | 2026 PC shipment forecast | 2026 smartphone shipment forecast | Other relevant projection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gartner, February 26, 2026 | Down 10.4% | Down 8.4% | Consumer PC prices projected to rise 17% and smartphone prices 13% compared with 2025. |
| IDC, later 2026 update | Down 11.3% | Down 12.9% | IDC describes its own market and scenario estimates; the cited figures are not final observed results. |
The estimates differ and should not be blended into a single number. Gartner’s February projections and IDC’s later update reflect separate publisher forecasts, not a consensus measurement. Neither says what a particular buyer will pay for a specific configuration. Gartner’s projected consumer-price increases are also not a promise that every retailer will apply those increases to every laptop or phone.
The useful conclusion is not that a specific device will definitely become more expensive, or that you should rush to buy. Rather, forecasts make it sensible to check specifications and current prices carefully. If a listing changes, compare the new offer on its own exact configuration and terms instead of assuming the change is caused by a particular component-cost forecast.
Check these details on the listing before you buy
1. Confirm RAM on the exact SKU
Read the memory figure on the specific configuration page or seller listing. Do not infer it from a model-family name, a general product page, an image, or an older review. If the retailer’s listing does not clearly identify the configuration, check the manufacturer’s official specifications for that exact model identifier or ask the seller to confirm it before ordering.
RAM is system memory; it is not the same as a laptop’s SSD capacity or a phone’s built-in storage. The right amount depends on your applications, operating system, workload and how long you expect to keep the device. The market forecasts do not establish one universal minimum that suits every buyer.
Record the RAM figure as it appears for the exact configuration, rather than writing down only the shared model name. If one candidate is advertised with a starting price, find out which RAM version that price actually covers. If a listing gives no clear configuration or the description is inconsistent, do not treat a photo or a nearby product-family description as confirmation.
2. Verify storage capacity separately
For a laptop, confirm the advertised SSD capacity as well as RAM. For a phone, check its built-in storage specification rather than relying on the broad family name. A higher RAM figure does not compensate for less storage if your own files and apps need room; they are different parts of the configuration and should be evaluated independently.
This matters especially when comparing a new device with an earlier generation. IDC says some new phones may have less RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices even at the same or a higher price, and it expects similar specification reductions in PCs. That possibility is a reason to look at both figures, not to assume the newest version has been reduced. Check what the exact offer says.
For laptop listings, make sure you are comparing SSD capacity rather than accidentally treating it as system RAM. For phone listings, identify the stated built-in storage rather than assuming that every version in a family has the same capacity. Write the two figures in separate columns if that helps avoid a misleading comparison.

3. Compare the price for the same configuration
Compare like with like: the same RAM and storage, seller, condition, warranty and included items. A low price for a lower-capacity version is not directly comparable with a more expensive listing for a higher-capacity version. Check the price of the exact configuration in the cart or checkout as well as the advertised starting price.
IDC and TrendForce describe market-wide supply and cost pressure; they are not live surveys of individual retail offers. Their forecasts alone cannot tell you whether a device is fairly priced today. Base that judgment on the actual configuration and current offers you can verify.
Do not compare a new device with a refurbished or second-hand one as if price were the only difference. Note the condition, seller, warranty and included items for each offer, then consider whether the trade-off makes sense for you. Gartner has noted that some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones, but that does not establish that any particular used listing is good value.

Match the configuration first, then compare the complete terms. The market forecasts are context for possible pressure, not a substitute for checking the price available to you.
4. Check whether storage is expandable
If you may need more space later, verify expandability for the exact model in its official specifications. Do not assume that another version in the same family, an older model, or a product image proves that storage can be expanded. This is a model-specific question; the market analysis does not verify expandability for any particular laptop or phone.
Make this a separate check rather than assuming an upgrade is possible because the storage figure seems low. If expandability matters to your decision but the official model specifications do not make it clear, treat it as unconfirmed until the manufacturer or seller verifies the exact model. If storage cannot be expanded, or if that is not established, compare the built-in capacity against what you expect to need during the time you plan to own the device.
5. Pay extra attention to entry-level configurations
IDC says lower-end devices have less room to absorb rising memory costs and could face specification cuts or higher prices. Use that as a reason to inspect the exact configuration carefully, not as a rule that every budget device is a poor purchase. Decide whether the listed RAM and storage meet your own needs before treating a low headline price as a bargain.

A practical comparison process for two or more devices
- Write down the exact model and configuration. Record the SKU or other model identifier, RAM and storage for each candidate. For laptops, list system RAM and SSD capacity separately; for phones, note RAM and built-in storage separately. If the listing shows only the product family or a starting configuration, identify the specific version before moving on.
- Verify each specification against an official model page. Use the exact model identifier where available. If a retailer’s description and the manufacturer’s specifications do not match, do not assume which one is correct—ask the seller to clarify before buying. Do not use a product image or an older review as a substitute for confirmation.
- Record the complete offer. Note the price for that exact configuration, seller, new or refurbished/used condition, warranty and included items. Compare the same terms across candidates. Check that a displayed starting price corresponds to the configuration you actually intend to purchase.
- Check expansion only if it matters to your decision. Confirm the exact model’s official specifications rather than assuming storage can be added later. If expansion is important and the information is unclear, treat it as unconfirmed when comparing.
- Match the specification to your use and ownership period. Consider the applications, operating system and workload you expect to use, plus how long you plan to keep the device. The sources do not provide a universal RAM or storage threshold, so this part of the comparison depends on your requirements.
- Compare current offers, not market forecasts. Once configurations and terms match, compare the prices you can actually purchase them for. Analysts’ component forecasts provide context for market pressure, not a substitute for checking today’s listing.
A compact comparison table can make the differences visible. Use one row per candidate and columns for exact model/SKU, RAM, SSD or built-in storage, expandability if confirmed, price, seller, condition, warranty and included items. Mark an unknown specification as unconfirmed rather than filling it in from another version. If two candidates do not have the same capacity, note that difference explicitly instead of comparing only their headline prices.
Then apply your own requirements. Think about which applications and tasks you need to run, which operating system you use, and how long you expect to keep the device. Those factors determine what configuration is suitable; the market outlook cannot turn them into one universal recommendation. If a particular specification is essential to you, confirm that the exact offer includes it before deciding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy now or wait?
Start with the condition of your current device and whether it can meet your needs. Gartner’s February 2026 release forecast longer device lifetimes as prices rise. That supports considering whether a replacement is necessary now, but it does not mean you should delay a replacement you need.
If you can wait, you may choose to monitor exact configurations and offers rather than assume prices will move in one direction. The forecasts point to elevated costs and possible ongoing supply challenges, but they do not establish what a particular model will cost later or whether its specification will change. If your existing device is no longer suitable, compare what is available now using the checklist above.
There is no forecast here that resolves the timing question for an individual buyer. Gartner’s and IDC’s shipment projections differ, and component-price or supply forecasts are not a guarantee of what a retailer will charge. Waiting could leave you with a different set of offers, but the available estimates do not say which exact model will be cheaper or better configured at a future date.
Refurbished or second-hand phones may also be an option for some entry-level buyers; Gartner noted this possibility. That does not establish that any particular used offer is good value. If you consider one, assess its condition, seller, warranty and included items alongside the configuration and price, and compare it on those terms with new devices. Do not treat the lower price alone as proof that the alternative meets your needs.
Keep forecasts in perspective
Gartner’s Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst, forecast that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” This is a forecast, not a confirmed future event or a statement that all lower-priced PCs will vanish. It should not replace checking the specific products and prices available to you.

The useful buying decision is narrower than the market outlook: determine what the exact listing includes, whether that configuration suits your needs, and how its complete offer compares with alternatives. Market forecasts explain why configurations and prices deserve close attention; they cannot decide whether a particular device is right for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could a laptop or phone have less memory for the same price?
It is possible, but not certain for every model. IDC says some new phones may arrive with lower RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices at the same or a higher price, and expects similar configuration reductions in PCs. Check the exact listing rather than assuming a product family has unchanged specifications.
Do the shortage forecasts mean retail laptop and phone prices will rise by the same amount?
No. TrendForce’s 10–15% DRAM and 15–20% NAND Flash projections for 4Q26 are quarter-over-quarter component contract-price forecasts, not retail price predictions for every device. Check the actual price for the exact configuration you can buy.
How much RAM or storage should I get?
There is no universal minimum established by the market forecasts. The suitable configuration depends on your applications, operating system, workload and how long you expect to keep the device. Compare RAM separately from a laptop’s SSD capacity or a phone’s built-in storage.
Can I assume storage is expandable?
No. Confirm expandability in the official specifications for the exact model. Do not infer it from a different version in the same product family, an older model or a product photo.
Should I wait to buy?
That depends on your current device and needs. Gartner forecast longer device lifetimes as prices rise, which supports considering whether replacement can wait, but it is not a reason to delay a replacement you need. Forecasts do not establish what a particular device will cost later.
Is a refurbished or second-hand phone a better deal during the shortage?
Not automatically. Gartner noted that some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones, but no particular offer is evaluated here. Compare its exact configuration, condition, seller, warranty, included items and price with a new device.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, verify the exact SKU and its RAM and storage, confirm any expandability you care about, and compare the complete price and terms with equivalent offers. Analysts forecast ongoing memory supply and cost pressure, but those forecasts do not tell you whether one specific laptop or phone is a good deal—or whether you should replace a device you still need.
