Dietitians’ Costco picks are practical staples that can work across meals: oats, plain Greek yogurt, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds, fish, frozen berries, vegetables, and convenient proteins. The best choice is not automatically the biggest package or a particular branded product—it is food your household will use before it spoils, in portions that fit your budget and storage space.

How to choose Costco foods that are worth buying

Think of these recommendations as flexible shopping ideas, not a ranking or a prescribed diet. A useful bulk purchase combines nutrition, convenience and a realistic plan for using it.

  • Check what the food adds. Protein and fiber can help make meals more satisfying; also consider the type of fat and how the food fits with the rest of the meal. Read the current label rather than relying on a product description or an old nutrition figure. Food Network’s dietitian and chef panel discusses these considerations.
  • Look for more than one use. Chickpeas can go into salads, soups and grain bowls; frozen berries can top oatmeal or yogurt, go into smoothies, or be used in baking. Versatility makes it easier to finish a large package.
  • Match the package to your household. Consider the use-by date, household size, freezer capacity and whether you can divide the food into smaller portions. Buying more fresh food than you can eat can erase the value of a bulk purchase.
  • Choose food you will actually enjoy. Convenient, good-tasting ingredients are more likely to become part of a routine. As chef Duran told Food Network: “I’m a chef, not a martyr! If the healthy version tastes like the packing material, I’m eating something else. Give me real food that tastes good and keeps me satisfied and makes it easier to cook at home.”

Costco products and selection vary by location and can change. Treat the products below as examples, and check your local warehouse or Costco’s current listings before planning around a particular item.

Dietitian-recommended Costco foods to consider

Oats and plain Greek yogurt

Oats are a flexible source of soluble fiber, while plain Greek yogurt can add protein to breakfast or snacks. WeightWatchers’ guide gives an example of nonfat Greek yogurt at about 133 calories and 23 grams of protein per cup. That figure is the publication’s reported example, not a guarantee for every brand or product; check the current container for serving size and nutrition information. WeightWatchers’ Costco guide features these staples.

Beans and lentils

Canned chickpeas are ready to add to salads, soups and grain bowls. Good Housekeeping reports 6 grams of protein per half cup of chickpeas. Its guide also recommends Tasty Bite Madras Lentils as a convenient meal component, reporting 6 grams each of protein and fiber per serving. Those figures are from the publication’s 2026 guide; product formulations and serving sizes can change, so use the package label when comparing products. Good Housekeeping’s Costco food guide includes both examples.

Canned fish

Canned sardines can be added to salads, grain bowls or pasta when you want a convenient fish option. Good Housekeeping dietitian Valerie Agyeman recommends them as an easy way to include fish in meals. Consider how you like to serve them and check the label for sodium and other details that matter to you.

Nuts, seeds and hemp hearts

Cashews, pistachios and pumpkin seeds can work as snacks or toppings for salads and other dishes. Hemp hearts are another versatile topping for yogurt, oatmeal or salads. Good Housekeeping reports 10 grams of protein and 12 grams of polyunsaturated fats per 2 tablespoons of Kirkland Organic Hemp Hearts. The reported values are serving-specific and may change; confirm them on the current package. Buy a quantity you can store well and use regularly.

Frozen berries

A frozen berry blend can be a practical alternative when fresh fruit may spoil before you finish it. Food Network and Good Housekeeping both include Kirkland Three Berry Blend as an example. Add frozen berries to oatmeal, yogurt or smoothies, or use them in baking. Frozen fruit still needs freezer space, so make sure you can store the package safely and reach it easily.

Quick proteins, vegetables and smaller portions

Good Housekeeping’s examples include canned chicken, egg-white frittatas and salad kits; its 2026 guide reports 70 calories and 5 grams of protein per serving for Veggies Made Great spinach egg-white frittatas. Food Network also highlights cauliflower-crust pizza as a quick meal option. These convenience foods can make a meal easier to assemble; add vegetables or another food group when that would make it more satisfying. Nutrition figures are publication-reported examples, not independent tests, and current labels should take priority.

For foods that are easy to waste once opened, portion size matters as much as price. WeightWatchers recommends single-serve hummus for people unlikely to finish a large tub before it spoils. Smaller packs may suit some households better even when a larger container seems like the better bulk buy.

Make a bulk purchase work for your budget

For a personal-finance decision, compare what you will actually consume—not just the package price or apparent cost per unit. A low unit price is not a saving if part of the food goes unused.

  1. Estimate use before buying. Think through meals or snacks where the item will fit during its usable life.
  2. Check the storage plan. Make room in the pantry, refrigerator or freezer, and decide whether you can portion the package after opening.
  3. Compare like with like. Check unit price, serving size, ingredients and nutrition labels against alternatives you would genuinely buy. A bulk package is useful only if its quantity and contents suit your household.
  4. Account for household needs. Allergies, dietary preferences, kitchen space and how many people will eat the food all affect whether a large pack makes sense.

There is no established overall statistic showing that Costco’s food assortment is healthier or better value than other stores. The recommendations here are individual examples from dietitian interviews and shopping guides, not evidence that every Costco product is a good deal.
