Its games-specific Standard is publicly available, but it is guidance, not a law, certification, or guarantee of regulatory compliance.
What is the Sustainable Games Alliance?
SGA is a member-governed cooperative formed by game companies, trade associations, entrepreneurs, and sustainability researchers. It announced its launch in Helsinki on August 14, 2024, with the ambition of making the games industry a sustainability leader. The Alliance says its approach is to develop common standards and practical methods to measure, understand, and reduce the sector’s environmental footprint.
The problem it is trying to address is not limited to electricity used in a studio. Games rely on a chain of activities—from design and development to advertising, distribution, online services, devices, and player use. A shared accounting approach can help companies see impacts across that chain instead of relying on incompatible estimates.
What does the SGA Standard measure?
The Standard is designed for the games sector and is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, with methodologies and boundaries adapted to game-industry activities. SGA’s published materials cover, among other areas:
#1 Best Overall
- Studio operations: office energy use, including Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
- Purchased services: examples include digital advertising and data centres, which can fall within Scope 3.1.
- Distribution and product use: game installs and updates, downstream distribution, end-user devices, and use of mobile, console, and PC products, including activities associated with Scope 3.9 and Scope 3.11.
Those categories matter because a studio’s direct fuel or electricity use may be only part of the footprint associated with making and playing a game. The Standard gives companies a common framework for identifying relevant activities and reporting them. The applicable boundary and data requirements still depend on the organization and the reporting context.
How the framework can inform practical changes
SGA presents measurement as a starting point for decisions, not an end in itself. Once a company can identify where energy or emissions occur, it can investigate changes to operations and products. The Alliance’s materials connect developer efficiency with energy use, game performance, player experience, and cost efficiency.
For example, a company might examine server infrastructure, the energy implications of product features, or how advertising and data services are procured. SGA also points to optimization plugins and tools as part of its work. These are intended to help developers improve efficiency; the public materials do not establish that using the tools has already delivered a particular, independently measured reduction.

Energy efficiency can also matter directly to players and businesses. Lower demand may support longer battery life on portable devices and reduce electricity use, while performance improvements can have commercial as well as environmental value. Those are potential benefits to evaluate in a specific product, not guaranteed outcomes for every optimization.

SGA’s application materials illustrate different levels of effort and specificity with digital advertising. One option is a basic estimate based on spending. Another uses automated supplier data aligned with Ad Net Zero’s GMSF V1.2 specification.
A spend-based estimate may be easier to assemble when detailed activity data is unavailable, but it is a proxy. Supplier or activity data can provide a more specific view and may be more useful for identifying changes, although it can require access to supplier information and different software or implementation work. Companies should choose an approach that fits their reporting boundary, data access, time, and applicable obligations rather than assuming the most detailed method is always immediately available.

How SGA develops and updates the Standard
SGA describes the Standard as a set of components that are developed and updated iteratively. Members, reporting experts, and research partners can contribute to methodologies, data formats, and boundaries. Near-final components are reviewed by experts in carbon accounting and public-standard development through the STRATEGIES project’s WP3; members can then provide final feedback, and the SGA Board approves new versions.
The intended users include game developers, publishers, operators, sustainability managers, and service providers. SGA says its published components, methodological specifications, and input sheets can be viewed, downloaded, and applied. Its application page instructs users to make a copy of the input sheets and enter organizational data.

Is the Standard free, and does using it meet reporting rules?
SGA makes its Standard materials and application sheets publicly available. The Alliance also offers reporting support, worksheets, guidance, and training, and says its initial regulatory focus includes the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

Using the Standard does not by itself establish that a company complies with CSRD, ESRS, or any other law. SGA describes it as a sector-specific reporting framework and support resource, not a regulator or legal certification. Whether a particular company has reporting duties depends on its facts and jurisdiction; it should assess those separately and seek appropriate professional advice where needed.

What the available emissions figures do—and do not—show
SGA’s Standard page reports emissions totals for a dozen of the largest game companies and a broader total that includes technology companies. However, the passage presenting those totals does not clearly identify the reporting year. Without a clear year and supporting boundaries, they should not be treated as current annual industry statistics or compared as if they cover the same set of activities.
Likewise, the 2024 launch release describes the industry as generating “almost 200 billion in annual revenues” but does not establish the currency or provide an underlying source in the passage. That figure is not a sufficiently specified current market statistic for financial comparisons.
What this means for studios and the wider industry
SGA’s contribution is a shared measurement framework aimed at making sustainability work more comparable and useful to decision-makers. Its Standard covers activities beyond studio offices, while its broader services include benchmarking, research, collaboration, and developer-efficiency support. Public access lets organizations explore the materials without first becoming members; membership is a separate route for organizational participation and services.
The intended result is better-informed decisions about reporting and resource use. Whether those decisions reduce emissions depends on the quality of company data, the changes organizations make, and how outcomes are measured over time.
