A photograph shared publicly in February 2024 shows FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried with several other inmates at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), including a man identified in contemporaneous reporting as G Lock, a former Bloods member. The image is historical: later reporting in June 2026 placed Bankman-Fried at a federal prison in Lompoc, California.
What does the Sam Bankman-Fried jail photo show?
The image depicts Bankman-Fried posing with several inmates. One man in the photograph is identified as G Lock in contemporaneous reporting and in the image’s Wikimedia Commons file description. Those sources describe G Lock as a former Bloods member; that characterization is attributed to them, not independently established here.
Wikimedia Commons file information assigns the photograph a date of December 17, 2023, and identifies its location as MDC Brooklyn. These are repository metadata, not details independently confirmed in a public statement from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
How the photograph became public
On February 20, 2024, Futurism reported that journalist Tiffany Fong shared the photograph and obtained it through G Lock, described as a fellow inmate. The Commons file credits the source as Tiffany Fong via G-Lock, lists the photographer as unknown, and names the Federal Bureau of Prisons as the photographer’s organization. That repository credit does not establish that the agency released or verified the image.

The exact chain of custody, the original photographer, and official confirmation of the image’s date and location are not established by the cited accounts.
Why the image should not be read as current
The photograph is presented as a snapshot from Bankman-Fried’s reported time at MDC, not as evidence of his current facility or condition. A June 16, 2026 New York magazine feature described him as incarcerated at a federal prison in Lompoc, California, and recalled G Lock among people who overlapped with him at MDC. That is later feature reporting, not a live official custody record.

What was said about the photo
Protos attributed two remarks to people connected with the image. It quoted Fong as saying, “My intent in posting the photo is not to piss Sam off or make fun of him,” and attributed to G Lock the remark, “Sam is more gangster than (American rapper) Tekashi 69.” These are reported quotations; the cited account does not provide an independently verified recording or transcript.
