What changed—and what did not
Skydance announced on October 6, 2026, that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions were met. The transaction brings Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming business into Skydance’s portfolio, which includes Paramount+. The company identifies HBO Max and Discovery+ among the services in that broader portfolio.

For viewers, the key distinction is between a completed corporate transaction and a future product change. The ownership change is complete. The HBO Max Help Center’s company-update FAQ says that, for now, there are no immediate changes to the Paramount+ or HBO Max apps, libraries, subscriptions, prices or access. That means the deal’s closing does not itself require you to download a replacement app, move an account or switch plans.

Do you need to do anything as an existing subscriber?
No. The FAQ answers that question directly: “No, you don’t need to do anything right now.” It also says that people subscribed to both services can keep using each as they do today. No account migration or new subscription is required under the current guidance.
The FAQ is published on HBO Max’s Montenegro help-center page and directs people in other locations to choose their country. Its general company-update guidance is useful, but it does not establish every territory’s account or billing procedures. If your subscription is billed outside the service itself—through an app store, telecom provider or another billing partner—check notices from that provider and your local service help center before making account changes. The FAQ does not specify how third-party billing would be handled if plans change later.
There is no merger-related need to buy new hardware or replace a working streaming device. The current instruction is to keep using the services as usual. If either app has an ordinary technical problem, treat it as a service or device issue rather than evidence that your account must be migrated because of the acquisition.

Will Paramount+ and HBO Max be bundled or moved into one app?
Not immediately, according to the FAQ: it says there are no immediate bundle or app changes. It says it will be updated if bundle options or app changes are announced. Separately, the Associated Press reported on October 7, 2026, that Skydance plans to unify its streaming products into a single service over time.
Those statements describe different time horizons, not a contradiction. The company has indicated a future direction, while the current subscriber guidance says no product change is in effect now. The sources do not establish the future service’s name, launch date, app design, subscription tiers, account-conversion steps or whether customers will be able to keep services separate. Do not treat a prospective unified service as an existing bundle or assume that one subscription will automatically replace the other.
David Ellison, Skydance’s chairman and CEO, told AP earlier in 2026, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” He also said that combining platforms could help the content reach a broader audience. That is a leadership view reported before the acquisition closed, not a final specification for how the apps, brands or plans will work.

What happens to your bill?
The stated current position is no immediate price change. The HBO Max FAQ says the company will communicate future price changes in advance. It does not provide a future price, effective date, shared billing plan or estimate of how a unified service might compare with paying for two subscriptions.

For a household deciding what to keep today, use the amounts actually shown on your own bills. Add the current recurring charges for Paramount+ and HBO Max, including any taxes or billing arrangements shown by your provider, and compare that total with what you would spend if you kept only the service you use. The merger does not yet give you a reliable future bundle price against which to make that calculation.
A useful decision is therefore based on current viewing, not a predicted deal: how often household members use each service, whether they value access to both libraries, and each subscription’s actual billed cost. If one service is not worth its current cost to you, that is a present-day budget choice; there is no confirmed future bundle or price outcome that makes cancellation or retention the universally better move.

Do not infer a coming increase from the size of the combined company or from discussion of its debt. AP reported concern that debt could put pressure on prices, but that is a concern, not a confirmed increase or a reliable forecast for an individual subscriber. Conversely, the Department of Justice’s competition conclusion is not a promise that prices will fall. No source establishes a realized change in a household’s streaming bill from this transaction.

On June 12, 2026, before the acquisition closed, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said it had completed an eight-month investigation. Based on the evidence it reviewed, DOJ concluded the proposed deal was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in subscription video-on-demand, linear television, or theatrical film production and distribution. The agency said its analysis suggested the combined company could be a more robust competitor to larger subscription streaming services.

That is DOJ’s assessment of competition in specified markets, not a consumer price guarantee, a finding that every subscriber will benefit, or a promise about a particular title’s availability. DOJ also said it saw no evidence that Paramount’s historical practice or incentive to license content would end after the transaction. This is narrower than saying a particular show or film will remain on a specific service: licensing terms can expire, and the agency’s statement does not settle any title’s destination.

AP reported that Paramount+ and HBO Max together account for roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, citing JustWatch. That is a reported market-share estimate, not a share of subscribers or a company-reported count. Separately, Skydance said it has more than 200 million streaming subscribers across its platforms. That company-reported portfolio figure is not an estimate of unique people or of combined Paramount+ and HBO Max accounts. These measures describe different things and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.
What UK subscribers should know
The UK government described commitments offered by Paramount after the Culture Secretary raised concerns involving media plurality, children’s programming, editorial independence and news. The commitments are specific to the UK. Among other things, the government said the combined group would not consolidate its UK linear channels with on-demand services, would preserve distinct editorial identities for those services and children’s channels, and would continue original UK children’s content. It also described protections for specified Channel 5 and news arrangements.
The government said the commitments generally take effect on completion and last five years; the Channel 5 commitments run through December 31, 2034. Its page was published on August 6, 2026, before the deal closed. These undertakings concern UK services, channels and programming. They do not establish a global app design, streaming bundle, subscription price or account-migration rule, and they should not be applied to subscribers in other countries.

- Check what you currently pay. Use the amount and billing frequency on your latest statement or provider account, rather than assuming a merger-related price has already changed.
- Identify who bills you. If a third party collects payment, look for notices in that provider’s account or communications as well as in the streaming service’s local help center.
- Decide based on current use. Consider the shows and films your household watches now and whether each service is worth its current billed cost. A future combined price and catalog have not been specified.
- Do not switch because of an assumed migration deadline. The current FAQ says no immediate action, app change or bundle change is required. No migration date or process has been announced in the sources available as of October 13, 2026.
- Recheck official notices if plans change. The FAQ says it will be updated if bundle or app changes are announced and that future price changes will be communicated in advance. For territory-specific details, choose your country’s service help center.
What is still unknown
The available announcements leave important consumer details open. They do not say when the planned unification will happen, what the resulting service will be called, how much it will cost, whether current plans will remain available, how existing accounts will transfer, or what will happen to each service’s individual app and catalog over the longer term. They also do not announce a new common billing arrangement or a specific bundle.
Until the company provides those details, treat the present arrangement as the one that applies: separate services that remain usable, with no immediate change to the apps, content, subscriptions, pricing or access under the FAQ’s current guidance. Make subscription decisions using your actual account and current viewing needs, not a guessed future price or product design.
