The Beach Boys did not sell every right to every recording and song. In February 2021, Iconic Artists Group, the new venture led by music executive Irving Azoff, acquired a controlling interest in a defined group of the band’s intellectual property. Members and heirs retained an interest, and the purchase price was not disclosed.
What did the Beach Boys sell?
On February 18, 2021, TheWrap reported that Iconic Artists Group acquired a controlling interest in selected Beach Boys assets. The reported bundle included sound recordings, the band’s brand, selected musical compositions and memorabilia. Iconic later described the deal in similar terms: master recordings, a portion of publishing, the Beach Boys brand and memorabilia.

“Controlling interest” does not mean that every asset or right associated with the band changed hands. The reports do not provide a complete asset-by-asset schedule, identify every composition or recording in the bundle, or specify the ownership percentages.
Who owns the Beach Boys catalog now?
There is no single owner of all Beach Boys music rights established by these reports. The transaction concerned a controlling interest in selected intellectual property, while Music Business Worldwide reported that much of the band’s 1960s-era catalog remained owned by Universal Music Group. UMG had acquired Beach Boys recordings through EMI’s 2012 sale.

Members and heirs retained an interest in the assets included in the Iconic deal. Music Business Worldwide said that interest was intended to let them share in potential upside from Iconic’s marketing and promotion. The reporting does not state their precise percentage.
| Rights or asset category | What the 2021 reporting says | Ownership detail established |
|---|---|---|
| Sound recordings or masters | Included in the reported bundle of assets acquired by Iconic | Controlling interest acquired by Iconic; members and heirs retained an interest. The reports do not list every recording or state exact percentages. |
| Compositions or publishing | Selected compositions or a portion of publishing were included | The reports do not identify every composition or provide a complete ownership schedule. |
| Band name and brand | Included in the reported bundle | Iconic acquired a controlling interest in the described intellectual property; exact terms were not disclosed. |
| Memorabilia | Included in the reported bundle | The reports do not itemize the memorabilia or specify exact ownership shares. |
| Much of the 1960s-era catalog | Reported as remaining owned by Universal Music Group | Music Business Worldwide does not provide a complete recording-by-recording breakdown. |
The distinction matters because “catalog” can refer to different assets: a recording’s master, the underlying song composition, rights to a name or brand, or physical memorabilia. The cited reporting supports a defined bundle and a separate UMG holding, not a conclusion that all these rights moved together.

What was the sale price?
The price and other terms were not disclosed, according to TheWrap and Music Business Worldwide. Music Business Worldwide relayed a Bloomberg estimate that the assets’ total value was $100 million to $200 million. That was an estimate of asset value reported in 2021—not a confirmed purchase price or the amount paid by Iconic.

The band’s representatives framed the deal as a way to expand opportunities for the brand while preserving the group’s legacy. In a statement reported by TheWrap, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and the Carl Wilson estate said they wanted “a partner to help expand opportunities for our brand, while continuing to preserve our tradition as a band whose music transcends the test of time.” Azoff called the band “an American treasure,” while Chastan said being entrusted with its art and legacy was “both humbling and thrilling.” These were statements from participants in the transaction, not independent assessments of its results.
Where can you find Beach Boys releases?
Current releases do not establish which rights were part of the 2021 deal. For example, Universal Music Japan lists a Pet Sounds vinyl LP released August 26, 2026, and a Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights CD released May 15, 2026. The official Beach Boys website links to merchandise, an Amazon artist store and streaming services. Product editions and availability can vary by country.
