Target’s Día de Muertos shop groups seasonal products into decor and tabletop, arts and crafts, and collectibles. The retailer frames the assortment as a way to honor loved ones, but the observance is more than a set of themed products: it centers remembrance and family relationships with the dead. Here’s what Target lists and how to understand it in cultural context.
What is in Target’s Día de Muertos collection?
Target’s Día de Muertos shop presents a changing seasonal assortment, with examples including a Mini Wood Ofrenda Set, a 36-by-48-inch table cover, a wooden ofrenda painting activity kit, faux marigold garland, and figurines. Listings and availability may change.
Target’s shop says, “Honor your loved ones with pieces that celebrate family, tradition & memories.” It also invites shoppers to look for an icon in product details to identify and support Latino-owned brands. That icon is a product-discovery signal; it does not mean every item in the collection is Latino-owned.
Product examples are tied to specific years
Seasonal offerings change, so a product example should not be mistaken for a permanent part of the shop. Target’s cited listing is for the 2025 Barbie Signature Día De Muertos doll. Target describes it as wearing a cream gown with cempasúchil (marigold) detailing and a calavera face design, and including a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity. Target’s product description says its marigold motifs draw on flowers traditionally used to adorn altars and graves.

What is an ofrenda, and what goes on one?
An ofrenda is an offering or arrangement associated with remembering deceased loved ones. It belongs to a living practice of remembrance, not simply a decorative display. UNESCO describes Indigenous communities’ observance as commemorating the temporary return to Earth of deceased relatives and loved ones. Its account describes families laying flower petals, candles, and offerings along a path from cemetery to home during festivities from late October to early November.

- WAX-LIKE FLICKERING CANDLELIGHT: The warm white glow and ivory wax-look body resemble a traditional candle from across the room, while the melted-edge design adds realistic detail up close; bring a formal candlelit look to wedding tables, memorial arrangements, vigils and Christmas villages
- 40X LONGER-LASTING GLOW: Each tea light comes with a pre-installed 240mAh CR2032 battery, ready to glow right out of the box; it delivers 200+ hours of flickering light—about 40 times the runtime of a typical 5-hour wax tea light—helping decorations last through weddings, parties and holidays
- SET THE SCENE IN SECONDS: Slide the switch on the base and the warm flicker starts instantly. The compact design fits easily into holders, lanterns and centerpieces, while the replaceable CR2032 battery lets you reuse each tea light for future celebrations and seasonal displays
- PEACE OF MIND AROUND KIDS & PETS: Enjoy the glow without the worry of open flames, smoke or dripping wax, even if a candle is knocked over. Made with virgin polypropylene and a secure two-step battery compartment tested to meet UL 4200A requirements, each tea light is designed with everyday safety in mind
- FITS HOLDERS AND FORMAL DECOR: At 1.5 in dia x 1.3 in H, each tealight fits most standard tea light holders, votive cups and wall sconces; use for wedding centerpieces, memorial services, church vigils, formal dinners and Christmas villages; suitable for outdoor displays and light rain or splashes, but do not submerge
Those details describe practices in the communities covered by UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage listing; they are not a universal checklist for every family or every observance. The meaning and form of an ofrenda can be personal and rooted in family tradition.
Is Día de Muertos the same as Halloween?
No. The sources describe Día de Muertos as a remembrance observance centered on deceased loved ones and family practices. Halloween may share the calendar period and some visual motifs, but treating Día de Muertos as Halloween—or reducing it to skeleton imagery—misses the observance’s focus on remembrance and relationships with the dead.

What do community perspectives say about commercialization?
There is no single community view on the growing visibility and sale of Día de Muertos-themed goods. In Associated Press reporting published November 1, 2025, Sehila Mota Casper, director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, warned that businesses can prioritize profit over culture and said the observance is “beginning to get culturally appropriated by other individuals outside of our diaspora.”
Cesáreo Moreno, chief curator and visual director of the National Museum of Mexican Art, described Día de Muertos as a cultural expression with a role in grieving, while also discussing how popular culture has broadened awareness. Salvador Ordorica, a first-generation Mexican American quoted in the same report, said traditions can change if their core remains. These are distinct perspectives, not a consensus statement on behalf of all Mexican, Mexican American, Indigenous, or Latino communities.

What Target’s Latino-owned badge does—and does not—tell shoppers
Target says the icon appears in individual product details to help shoppers identify and support Latino-owned brands. It does not establish the ownership of every product in the Día de Muertos shop, nor does the shop information identify the designers or cultural advisers behind the assortment.
Target’s 2023 Latino Heritage Month fact sheet describes a separate assortment created with Latino artists and creators, as well as year-round Latino-owned brand discovery. That initiative does not document who designed or advised the current Día de Muertos assortment. See Target’s fact sheet, updated September 15, 2023, for the scope of that separate effort.

How to shop with the context in mind
- Check the individual listing. Product details can show whether an item carries Target’s Latino-owned brand icon and whether it is currently available.
- Consider what an item represents. A craft kit, tabletop item, or collectible can be part of a retail assortment, but no purchase is necessary to observe or honor the holiday.
- Keep the observance distinct from its imagery. Flowers, candles, offerings, and ofrendas have meaning in family and community practices; they are not interchangeable with generic seasonal decorations.
