How the loan became a permanent transfer
Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton on a season-long loan from Manchester City on 1 September 2023. BBC Sport reported that the loan included an obligation to buy if Southampton secured promotion. Southampton’s own announcement later confirmed that promotion activated a clause making the move permanent.
Southampton beat Leeds United in the Championship play-off final on 26 May 2024 to secure promotion. BBC Sport reported that the result triggered the permanent transfer. On 1 July, Southampton announced the completed move and said Harwood-Bellis had signed a four-year contract beginning that day.
What is known about the fee and other terms
BBC Sport reported a £20 million fee in its 26 May 2024 report and described the move as a £20m transfer again on 1 July. Southampton’s 1 July announcement confirmed the permanent transfer and contract but did not state the fee. The £20m figure should therefore be treated as BBC Sport’s reported amount, not as a fee publicly confirmed by Southampton.

BBC Sport also reported that Manchester City had buy-back and sell-on clauses. The reports cited here do not specify their values, percentages, conditions, timing or exercise terms, so they do not establish how much City might have received from a future sale.

Why appearance totals differ
Southampton reported 46 appearances and six goal contributions for Harwood-Bellis in the 2023/24 season. What happened after the Southampton deal
On 1 September 2026, Southampton announced that Harwood-Bellis had moved permanently to Aston Villa for what it called a “substantial fee,” without giving an amount. That announcement does not establish the transfer price or any proceeds for Manchester City under its reported 2024 clauses. Southampton FC
