In a December 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Sydney Sweeney said, “I’m against hate and divisiveness,” and acknowledged that her silence about the American Eagle campaign controversy had “only widened the divide, not closed it.” Her comments followed months of debate over the retailer’s “Great Jeans” campaign and its play on the words “jeans” and “genes.”
What Sweeney said
Sweeney told PEOPLE in December 2025: “I’m against hate and divisiveness.” She also explained why she had decided to address the controversy after not responding earlier:
“In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.”
Those remarks addressed her approach to the dispute. They did not, in the quoted statements, spell out a detailed interpretation of the campaign or endorse either side’s reading of it.

What sparked the controversy
American Eagle’s denim campaign featured Sweeney under the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The argument centered especially on a teaser that used “genes” as a wordplay hook, discussing inherited traits such as hair and eye color before connecting the copy back to blue jeans.
Some viewers said that the genetic language and imagery, alongside Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes, evoked eugenics and racialized beauty standards. Other commenters saw a straightforward jeans pun and argued that critics were reading too much into it. Those are competing interpretations; the campaign’s wording alone does not establish that it promoted eugenics or that this was the company’s intent. How American Eagle responded
On August 1, 2025, American Eagle said on Instagram that “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” “is and always was about the jeans,” adding that it would continue to celebrate how people wear AE jeans with confidence. That is the retailer’s stated position, distinct from how some viewers interpreted the teaser. The reported brand statement and campaign coverage document the response.
The Associated Press reported that American Eagle’s chief marketing officer described the campaign as using “clever, even provocative language” and said it was “definitely going to push buttons.” That supports describing the planned tone as provocative; it does not prove the company intended the eugenics interpretation or anticipated that specific reaction. The Associated Press report attributes those remarks to the marketing chief.
