Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →GST on an online marketplace purchase in India is generally determined by the product or service you buy—not by the fact that you bought it online. The supplier usually accounts for GST on the sale. A marketplace may separately collect tax at source (TCS) on qualifying sales, but that is an operator-side tax collection and reporting mechanism, not a second GST charge to add to your order.
Is GST charged separately on online shopping in India?
There is no universal GST rate for online shopping. The rate depends on the classification of the particular good or service, as in an offline purchase. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) lists rates by goods and services classifications in its GST goods and services rate reference. Check the classification and invoice for a specific transaction; a marketplace listing alone may not establish the correct rate.
The tax may appear as a separate line on the invoice, or the displayed price may already include it. To understand what was charged, check the tax invoice for the taxable value, rate and tax amount rather than assuming that a checkout total represents an extra marketplace tax.
Who accounts for GST on a marketplace order?
Ordinary marketplace sales
An electronic commerce operator is a person that owns, operates or manages a digital or electronic platform for electronic commerce. For an ordinary taxable sale by another supplier, the supplier’s GST liability on the underlying supply is distinct from any TCS the operator collects. CBIC explains that when the operator collects consideration for qualifying supplies, it collects TCS on the net value of taxable supplies and reports and remits that collection under the GST framework. See CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs on Electronic Commerce and Tax Collection at Source.

#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
Notified services under section 9(5)
There is a limited exception for service categories specified by notification under section 9(5) of the CGST Act. For those notified services, the operator pays GST as if it were the supplier. This exception does not mean that a marketplace pays GST on every product sold through it. The applicable provision is in the Central Goods and Services Tax Act.
What the marketplace’s TCS does—and does not do
TCS is associated with the operator’s collection and accounting for qualifying supplier sales. It is not a second consumer GST line to add automatically to the price of an order. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ states a 1% TCS rate for the cases it describes, split as 0.5% CGST and 0.5% SGST for intra-State supplies, but the FAQ contains legacy material and does not establish that this rate remained operative on 7 October 2026. Do not treat that figure as a verified current rate; the applicable notification must be checked.

How to check GST on your invoice
CBIC’s tax invoice rules list particulars that can include the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and issue date; HSN or accounting code; description; quantity for goods; total and taxable values; tax rate and amount; and place-of-supply information in applicable inter-State cases. Other recipient details may depend on registration status and transaction value.
- Find the tax invoice. An order confirmation or payment receipt may not contain every invoice detail. Use the order record or platform support to locate the invoice.
- Identify the supplier. The supplier named on the invoice is the starting point for questions about GST on the underlying sale; the platform may have a separate TCS role.
- Compare the transaction details. Check the description, taxable value, displayed rate and tax amount against the order. For a rate question, use the goods or services classification and the CBIC rate reference rather than assuming all marketplace purchases share one rate.
What happens to GST if you return an online order?
CBIC says returned supplies are adjusted when calculating an e-commerce operator’s net value of taxable supplies for TCS. That is an operator-side calculation; it does not prescribe exactly when or how every consumer will see the GST component reflected in a refund. Keep the platform’s refund record and any credit note or updated invoice, and compare them with the original invoice to see how the transaction was recorded.

How to compare GST across marketplace transactions
| What to compare | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Goods or service classification | The applicable GST rate depends on the actual supply and its classification, not simply on the marketplace used. See CBIC’s rate reference. |
| Supplier named on the invoice | It helps identify who made the underlying supply; the operator’s TCS role is distinct. See CBIC’s invoice rules and e-commerce FAQ. |
| Invoice tax particulars | Compare description, taxable value, tax rate, tax amount and supplier GSTIN. See CBIC’s invoice rules. |
| Transaction type | Only a service in a notified section 9(5) category places GST liability on the operator under that exception; do not apply it generally to marketplace goods. See the CGST Act and CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ. |
| Return status | Check whether a credit note or amended invoice records the return and how the platform reflects the refund. See CBIC’s invoice rules and e-commerce FAQ. |
This is a general explanation, not item-specific tax advice. For a particular order, the invoice and the rate applicable to that good or service are the practical starting points.
