Smithfield Foods transferred about 150,000 breeding sows and related hog inventories to a North Carolina operation associated with Murphy Family Ventures, while keeping a commercial relationship to buy hogs and provide feed and support services. Smithfield also invested $3 million for a 25% minority interest in Murphy Family Farms LLC, the entity named in its filings. The deal reduced Smithfield’s direct ownership of hog production without ending its access to hog supply.
What changed hands
Smithfield’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K says it sold approximately 150,000 sows and related inventories located on company-owned and contract farms in North Carolina. It also says the commercial hog inventories associated with the sows were sold on December 30, 2024. Reuters described the planned transaction as a sale of the sows to Murphy Family Ventures, with Murphy taking ownership of the animals and the market hogs they produced.
Smithfield’s filing identifies the entity it joined as Murphy Family Farms LLC. On December 27, 2024, Smithfield contributed $3 million for a 25% minority interest in that company. Reuters and the headline use “Murphy Family Ventures”; Smithfield’s filing uses “Murphy Family Farms LLC.” The available documents do not explain the precise corporate relationship between those names.
How the supply relationship works
The transaction shifted ownership, but not the commercial connection. Smithfield says Murphy Family Farms supplies approximately 3.2 million hogs annually. Smithfield continues to supply animal feed and other supplies and provide support services to Murphy. In practical terms, Murphy owns the breeding stock and hog inventories described in the filing, while Smithfield retains a supplier relationship and services connected to production.

Why Smithfield made the deal
Smithfield presented the arrangement as part of a shift toward a more streamlined consumer packaged goods company while maintaining hog supply from a family farming operation. CEO Shane Smith told Reuters, “With this agreement, we continue this transformation while ensuring a supply of hogs from a family farming operation.” The transaction therefore reduced Smithfield’s direct ownership of hog production while preserving access to hogs through a supplier relationship.
Smithfield later placed the transaction within its broader “Hog Production Reform,” which it said was intended to reduce the size of its hog operations and improve their cost structure. Reuters reported the sale as another reduction in owned hog production as Smithfield prepared for a U.S. listing. Smithfield’s fiscal 2025 filing says it completed its IPO on January 29, 2025, at $20 per share.
