SEGA SAMMY announced on March 28, 2024, that it planned to reduce approximately 240 roles across several European bases as part of a wider restructuring. The company’s announcement does not establish how many of those planned reductions were ultimately implemented, so the figure should not be read as a confirmed final layoff count.
What did SEGA announce, and when?
SEGA SAMMY Holdings said its board had resolved the measures on March 28, 2024. The company described the headcount reduction as a way to optimize fixed expenses while it reviewed its development structure and medium-term lineup. Its notice referred to “approximately 240 roles” at “several bases in the European region,” rather than naming affected employees or allocating cuts by site.
The company had separately said approximately 250 roles were reduced in September 2023 after some projects at European bases were cancelled. That was an earlier reduction, not part of the March 2024 announcement; the two figures should not be combined into a single event. SEGA SAMMY’s March 28, 2024 notice records the announcement and its broad scope.
Why did SEGA SAMMY say it was restructuring?
SEGA SAMMY attributed the decision to a changing consumer-business environment, particularly in Europe. It cited a pullback following the pandemic-era stay-at-home demand and an economic downturn related to inflation, saying profitability had declined. Those are the company’s stated reasons, not an independently established explanation of the causes of its financial performance.

The company presented the planned headcount reduction alongside a review of European development operations and fixed expenses. It was one element of a broader reform package, rather than the entirety of the changes.
What else was included in the reform package?
The March 2024 measures also included a decision to transfer SEGA SAMMY’s shares in Relic Entertainment and a review of the medium-term lineup at European studios. The company said some titles in development would be written down.

In its March 2024 notice, SEGA SAMMY forecast approximately ¥5.6 billion in work-in-progress write-downs to be recorded as cost of sales and approximately ¥6.2 billion in extraordinary losses for the fiscal year ending March 2024. It also forecast that the September 2023 and March 2024 reforms together would curb annual cash outflow by approximately ¥10.0 billion. These were forecasts made at the time, not confirmed realized results.
Which studios or locations were affected?
The announcement identifies several European bases but does not provide a site-by-site breakdown of the planned reductions in the passage available. It does not establish which individual studios or teams had a particular number of roles affected. The Relic share-transfer decision is part of the wider restructuring, but the announcement does not make it a breakdown of the approximately 240 planned role reductions.

Were all 240 planned reductions completed?
The announcement establishes a plan to reduce approximately 240 roles; it does not establish the final implementation count. SEGA Europe Limited’s Companies House filing history and SEGA Careers listings do not resolve that question: filings and open job postings do not show whether the plan was completed, how many people were affected, or whether later hiring offset earlier reductions. The final number therefore remains unconfirmed by the available records.
