Sam Altman’s sister, Annie Altman, sued him in January 2025, alleging he sexually abused her during their childhood at their family home in Missouri. Sam Altman denies the allegations. In March 2026, a judge dismissed her sexual assault and battery claims as expired but allowed her to amend her case under Missouri’s childhood sexual abuse law. The court also allowed Sam Altman to try to prove a separate defamation counterclaim; it did not find that the allegations were false.
What does Annie Altman’s lawsuit allege?
Reuters reported that Annie Altman filed a civil suit against her brother in January 2025. She alleges sexual abuse at the family home in suburban Clayton, Missouri, between 1997 and 2006. In Reuters’ March 2026 report, her allegations were described as beginning when she was three and Sam Altman was 12. Sam Altman denies the allegations; they have not been established as fact by a court.
Reuters’ March 20, 2026 report, republished by Investing.com, describes the initial ruling and the competing claims.
What did the judge decide?
On March 20, 2026, U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone in St. Louis dismissed Annie Altman’s sexual assault and sexual battery claims as expired. He allowed her to amend the complaint under Missouri’s Childhood Sexual Abuse statute. That permission was procedural: it did not determine whether the alleged abuse occurred.

The judge also allowed Sam Altman to try to prove his defamation counterclaim, which concerns his sister’s social media statements. Reuters reported that the judge said the statements could “require only a reasonable inference” for the claim to proceed. That is not a finding that the statements were false or defamatory; it means the counterclaim was allowed to be pursued.
What happened after the March ruling?
An amended complaint
Reuters reported that Annie Altman filed an amended complaint on April 1, 2026. Sam Altman continued to deny the allegations. Reuters’ April 1 report, republished by Investing.com, covered the filing and the denials.
A further dismissal request
On April 15, Reuters reported that Sam Altman sought dismissal of punitive-damages claims and renewed his request to dismiss the lawsuit. His argument was that the statute limited recovery to damages for injury or illness. The report describes a motion and his position, not a ruling on that request. Reuters’ April 15 report, republished by Investing.com covers the motion.
Lawyers sought to withdraw
On April 27, Reuters reported that the two law firms then representing Annie Altman asked to withdraw, citing a breakdown in the attorney-client relationship. The report records their request, not a later court decision on it. Reuters’ April 27 report, republished by Fidelity describes the request.

What is the lawsuit’s status?
The accessible Reuters reports establish developments through April 27, 2026, but do not establish the case’s docket posture as of October 8, 2026. A search result published around October 7 claimed there had been a deposition-video release and that Annie Altman had new counsel, but the page could not be opened to verify those details. They should not be treated as confirmed updates or as proof of a change in the case’s status.
