Sam Altman said he planned to donate $1 million personally to Donald Trump’s 2025 inaugural fund. The other $1 million contribution was announced by Amazon—not established as a personal donation from Jeff Bezos. Amazon also planned a separate Prime Video broadcast contribution, reported as an in-kind gift worth $1 million.

Who was reported to be donating the money?

In reports published December 13, 2024, the two $1 million cash contributions had different donors:

Contribution Donor and capacity What was reported
Planned $1 million cash gift Sam Altman personally The Associated Press reported that Altman planned to contribute personally and said an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the plan. The report quoted Altman saying he wanted to support President Trump’s efforts to keep the United States ahead in AI. Associated Press, Dec. 13, 2024.
$1 million cash gift Amazon, the company Amazon confirmed its corporate contribution to the fund. The reporting does not establish that Bezos personally donated this amount. Axios, Dec. 13, 2024.
Broadcast contribution, reported as worth $1 million Amazon, in kind Axios reported that Amazon planned to broadcast the inauguration on Prime Video and valued that separate contribution at $1 million, attributing the detail to a source close to the company. It was not described as a second $1 million cash donation. Axios, Dec. 13, 2024.

Did Jeff Bezos personally donate $1 million?

The cited reports do not establish a personal $1 million donation by Bezos. They identify Amazon as the donor of the cash contribution. TechCrunch’s headline grouped Altman and Bezos as prominent technology figures, but its article clarifies that Altman’s donation was personal and attributes Amazon’s contribution to the company. TechCrunch, Dec. 13, 2024.

That distinction matters: a company’s donation should not be presented as its executive chairman’s personal gift unless reporting establishes that attribution. In this case, the reported Amazon amount was corporate.

What does an inaugural fund support?

Inaugural funds support activities related to the inauguration ceremony, according to TechCrunch. The cited reports concern announcements and plans made in December 2024; they do not provide transaction-level confirmation of final payments or a full accounting of the fund’s eventual receipts and spending. A later letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office discusses Big Tech donations, but it does not substitute for a complete fund accounting. U.S. Senate, Jan. 2025.

What the reported $1 million figures do—and do not—show

  • Altman’s $1 million was reported as a planned personal contribution, confirmed by an OpenAI spokesperson; it was not reported as an OpenAI corporate donation.
  • Amazon’s $1 million cash contribution was confirmed by the company and attributed to Amazon.
  • The additional $1 million valuation for the Prime Video broadcast was a separately reported in-kind contribution, attributed by Axios to a source close to Amazon.
  • The reports establish announcements and plans, not independently audited final payments or the fund’s complete spending.

These reports do not establish that either contribution purchased a policy outcome or prove a motive beyond the explanation Altman gave publicly.
