In the account published by Futurism, Altman said he felt they had harmed him and the company, called the episode unfair, and said he had to clean up the aftermath. The wording describes the headline’s framing; the reporting supports sharp criticism, not a literal outburst.
What did Sam Altman say about the board members?
In a Bloomberg interview reported by Futurism on January 6, 2025, Altman said of former board members: “And all those people that I feel like really fucked me and fucked the company were gone, and now I had to clean up their mess.” He also described the experience as unfair and said it was “a crazy thing to have to go through and then have no time to recover, because the house was on fire.”
Altman’s remarks were a retrospective account of what he felt after the board members’ departure. The available reporting presents forceful language in an interview; it does not establish that he literally exploded in an on-camera or in-person outburst. The Bloomberg interview page was not accessible to the reporting outlet, so the quotations here are those Futurism reproduced, not a complete transcript.
Why did OpenAI’s board remove him?
OpenAI announced Altman’s departure from the CEO role and board on November 17, 2023. In its public statement, the board said it had concluded that Altman was “not consistently candid in his communications with the board,” which it said hindered its ability to exercise its responsibilities. It added: “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

That is the board’s stated rationale. Altman later said he had disagreements with certain board members over conduct he viewed as problematic or as conflicts, and that those members were unhappy with his efforts to remove them from the board. He called the experience a “Lesson learned.” These comments are Altman’s account; they do not independently establish why the board voted to remove him or prove a causal explanation for its decision.

Yes. Altman returned as OpenAI CEO after a five-day standoff, amid a change in the board. PBS NewsHour reported on November 22, 2023, that the initial replacement board included Bret Taylor as chair, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. The return and board change provide the resolution to the leadership crisis, but do not settle which account of the dispute was right.
