Rising Treasury yields can put pressure on Bitcoin, stocks and other risk assets by making interest-bearing assets more attractive and tightening financial conditions. But a yield increase is not a reliable sell signal: its effect depends on whether yields are rising because of real interest rates, inflation expectations, longer-term risk compensation or changing growth and policy expectations.
Why rising Treasury yields can pressure risk assets
Treasury yields influence the returns investors can seek from relatively low-risk, interest-bearing assets. When real yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding assets without contractual cash flows—such as Bitcoin—increases. Investors may also demand higher potential returns before buying riskier assets. These are plausible market channels, not a rule that Bitcoin or stocks must fall on any day yields rise.
Borrowing costs and asset valuations
Higher market rates can raise financing costs for households and businesses. For equities, higher discount rates can also reduce the present value of expected earnings, particularly for companies whose profits are expected far in the future. The effect depends on actual borrowing and credit conditions, not just the 10-year Treasury yield. The Atlanta Fed’s financial-conditions measure tracks Treasury, mortgage and corporate yields alongside equity and house prices and the broad dollar: Atlanta Fed financial-conditions index.
The dollar and global risk appetite
A stronger dollar can make dollar-denominated borrowing more burdensome and affect global portfolios, but the dollar does not move mechanically with Treasury yields. Tighter conditions may also lead investors to reduce risk. In some episodes, demand for long-term Treasuries as a safe asset pushes their yields down while risk assets fall. In others, yields rise even as stocks weaken because different forces dominate.

First identify what is making yields rise
A nominal Treasury yield combines more than one market force. The Federal Reserve’s June 2025 Monetary Policy Report discusses short- and medium-term yield changes in terms of real yields and inflation compensation, and longer-term changes in terms of risk compensation. A headline such as “the 10-year yield rose” does not, by itself, tell you which force changed. Federal Reserve, June 2025 Monetary Policy Report.
- Real yields: A rise can increase the relative appeal of interest-bearing assets and raise discount rates. This is the clearest version of the opportunity-cost channel for assets that do not pay interest.
- Inflation compensation: A rise may reflect greater expected inflation rather than a comparable increase in real returns. Inflation expectations can also affect expectations for monetary policy, so the implications are not identical to a real-yield increase.
- Term or risk compensation: Investors may require more compensation for holding longer-term debt. Long yields can therefore rise even if near-term policy expectations do not rise by as much.
- Growth and policy expectations: Markets may reprice expected economic activity or future policy. The same move in the 10-year yield can accompany different outlooks for corporate earnings, inflation and risk appetite.
For current interpretation, compare nominal Treasury yields with real yields and inflation-compensation measures, including Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). Also compare short and intermediate maturities with the 10-year and longer end: the yield-curve slope can help show whether the move is concentrated in policy expectations or longer-term compensation.

What the evidence says about Bitcoin
Bitcoin can trade like a risk asset, but the evidence does not establish a stable, stand-alone relationship between Bitcoin and Treasury yields. An August 2026 Chicago Fed working paper estimates that Bitcoin’s exposure to equities increased over time and became statistically above zero around 2020. Its estimated beta to 10-year Treasury bond returns, however, was not distinguishable from zero. The paper is unedited, and its authors say its opinions and errors are their own. Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago working paper, August 2026.
Other evidence highlights how much results depend on the period and method. A 2023 New York Fed staff report, using an intraday event study, found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news. That does not directly contradict the Chicago Fed’s longer-run estimate of increasing equity exposure: the studies examine different samples and measures. Taken together, they caution against treating a yield move as a dependable Bitcoin forecast. Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report, 2023.

Bitcoin trades continuously and can respond to crypto-specific flows and events as well as macroeconomic news. Its relationship with equities or rates can change across periods and market conditions; it is not necessarily either a safe haven or simply a technology stock.
Why yields and risk assets can move in the same direction
There is no universal pattern in which Treasuries rise whenever stocks fall. In early April 2025, the 10-year Treasury yield rose while stock prices fell sharply and volatility increased—a departure from the usual flight-to-safety pattern. The Federal Reserve’s account is a reminder to examine the inflation, growth, policy and term-premium context rather than assume that bond prices must rise when risk assets sell off. Historical stress evidence also does not support assuming Bitcoin will protect a portfolio when markets are unsettled. A Kansas City Fed study examining stress periods through March 2020 found that Bitcoin did not exhibit safe-haven behavior in those periods. That is a historical finding, not a verdict on every market episode since then. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City research on Bitcoin as a safe haven.
A practical checklist for reading a yield move
- Check real yields and inflation compensation. Determine whether the nominal move reflects higher real yields, inflation compensation or both.
- Compare maturities. Look at short- and intermediate-term yields alongside the 10-year and longer-term yields. Consider the yield curve rather than treating one maturity as the whole rate outlook.
- Check whether financial conditions are tightening broadly. Compare Treasury yields with mortgage and corporate borrowing rates, credit spreads, equity prices and the broad dollar. A change in one yield alone may not describe conditions facing borrowers or investors.
- Look for market stress and liquidity effects. If yields rise while stocks fall, consider whether inflation concerns, growth expectations, policy repricing or longer-term risk compensation may be outweighing typical demand for safe Treasuries.
- Put Bitcoin beside equities and crypto-specific developments. Compare its performance with a broad equity benchmark, while accounting for crypto-specific flows and events. Do not infer causation from a same-day correlation.
How to use current data without mistaking expectations for outcomes
Market context changes quickly, and the available dated figures are snapshots rather than live October 2026 readings. In its July 2026 Monetary Policy Report, the Federal Reserve said federal funds futures implied that investors expected the policy rate to rise about 30 basis points above the then-current effective rate, to around 4% by year-end 2026. That was a market-implied expectation reported using July data—not a Fed forecast, a promise or an observed year-end outcome. Federal Reserve, July 2026 Monetary Policy Report.

The same report noted that core PCE goods inflation was 2.4% over the 12 months through May 2026, compared with 0.6% a year earlier. That is inflation context, not evidence about Bitcoin’s response to yields. The Atlanta Fed’s August 2026 analysis, meanwhile, reported that its monetary policy index fell from 1.85 to 0.92 by May 2026 and that its financial-conditions index had eased to around its March 2022 hiking-cycle starting level. Those are constructed index readings through the period covered by that analysis, not yield levels or live October readings. Atlanta Fed analysis, August 2026.
