1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo calculate Bitcoin’s return after fees, taxes, and inflation, first subtract eligible transaction costs from what you receive and compare the result with your total purchase outlay. Then account for the actual tax attributable to the sale, if known, and adjust dollar values for inflation using a consistent CPI basis. These are separate calculations: investment return is not the same as U.S. federal taxable gain.
Start with the return you want to measure
For one purchase followed by one sale, use the same currency and include the costs that belong to each trade. The following is a transparent performance calculation; it is not an IRS-prescribed investment-return formula.
- Total acquisition outlay = purchase cost + acquisition fees included in the calculation.
- Net sale proceeds = sale proceeds − selling costs.
- Pretax net profit = net sale proceeds − total acquisition outlay.
- Simple holding-period return = pretax net profit ÷ total acquisition outlay.
Multiply the result by 100 to express it as a percentage. For example, if the outlay is $1,000 and net proceeds are $1,250, pretax profit is $250 and the holding-period return is 25%. Use your actual trade costs rather than a generic fee estimate.
Annualized return is a separate measure
For one starting outlay and one ending value, annualized compound return = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years held) − 1. State the dates and label the result “annualized”; it answers a different question from total return over the full holding period.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Multiple purchases or partial sales need transaction-level records
Do not apply the one-purchase shortcut to an account with recurring buys, partial dispositions, multiple lots, or fees paid in BTC. Use dated transaction records and the applicable basis-identification method. If money entered or left at different times, disclose the cash-flow dates and whether the calculation is time-weighted or cash-flow-weighted.
Calculate U.S. federal taxable gain separately
For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property and applies general property tax principles. Its FAQ says: “Your gain or loss on the sale of your digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency will be the difference between your adjusted basis in the digital assets and your ‘amount realized’ on the sale.” See the IRS Frequently asked questions on digital asset transactions, FAQ 52.
Taxable gain is not simply your investment profit under the return formula above. For a sale, amount realized includes cash and the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by allocable digital-asset transaction costs. Adjusted basis is a tax calculation. The IRS says basis for a cash purchase includes the cash paid for the asset plus cash paid for transaction services that effect the purchase; costs paid for services that effect a sale may reduce amount realized.

Classify fees by what they paid for
The IRS describes transaction costs as amounts paid for services to effect a purchase, sale, or disposition, with examples including commissions, transaction fees, gas fees, and transfer taxes. The FAQ excludes costs for transferring assets between accounts or wallets you own from that definition. Do not automatically treat every custody, network, or movement fee as an includable basis cost or deductible sale cost; classify the actual charge under the rules applicable to the trade and tax year.
Holding period affects tax character, not your investment-return formula
The IRS says the holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the date of sale or exchange. A digital asset held one year or less has short-term gain or loss treatment; a holding period longer than one year has long-term treatment. That distinction does not establish your tax rate or tax due: those depend on your circumstances, the transaction, and applicable law. See the IRS digital asset FAQ for its holding-period guidance.
Do not estimate after-tax return with a generic tax percentage
If you know the actual tax attributable to the disposition, you can show an after-tax performance calculation: after-tax proceeds = net sale proceeds − that tax; after-tax return = (after-tax proceeds − total acquisition outlay) ÷ total acquisition outlay. If the tax amount is not known, do not present a made-up percentage as the reader’s after-tax return. Taxable gain and the tax attributable to it are not interchangeable figures.

Adjust for inflation using a common dollar year
Nominal return compares dollar values as recorded at the time. Inflation-adjusted return compares purchasing power by converting values to the same dollar year. To express the ending value in the initial year’s dollars, use:
Inflation-adjusted ending value = ending nominal value × (CPI in initial year ÷ CPI in ending year).

Compare that converted ending value with the starting outlay expressed in the same base-year dollars, then calculate return. Keep the nominal and inflation-adjusted results separate so the effect of inflation is visible. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation Calculator adjusts dollar amounts between years; it does not provide Bitcoin prices or calculate tax.
If exact intra-year alignment matters, state which CPI observations you used. The BLS calculator is year-oriented and may not match the dates or timestamps of individual Bitcoin trades. CPI-adjusted performance is not “realized after-tax return” unless the tax amount and its timing are also included.

The IRS page states that Form 1099-DA reporting applies to covered broker transactions from 2025, while basis reporting applies to certain transactions from 2026. These dates concern the reporting described on that page; check current IRS instructions for the filing year. Broker forms do not remove the need to keep your own records.
