Do not assume that “connect” means read-only or that a product is safe because it uses a familiar brokerage login. The permission screen and the providers’ current terms—not a general claim about AI—determine what this particular connection allows.
What can the AI connection access or change?
Read the authorization screen before approving anything. Check whether the service can see holdings, balances, transactions, identity details, linked accounts, or account documents. Then look separately for permissions to change profile or account settings, place trades, or transfer money or assets.

Ask both the AI provider and brokerage to explain the exact permission scope. Do not infer that access is limited because the feature is described as an account connection or analysis tool. The available permission options vary by product, and there is no basis for assuming every brokerage offers a read-only connection.

Find out whether you authenticate on the brokerage’s own site or app, or whether the AI provider asks you to enter and share your brokerage credentials. Ask what permissions authorization grants, how long it lasts, and where to disconnect the service. Know how to revoke access at the brokerage as well as within the AI product, if both offer a control.

Use a verified route to sign in. The SEC warns that impostor investment websites can steal usernames, passwords, multifactor authentication codes, and one-time passcodes. Do not follow login links from an unverified advertisement, message, or email; navigate to the brokerage’s known site or app instead. SEC guidance on avoiding investment fraud
What data is collected, retained, shared, or used to train models?
Ask what happens to account data, prompts, AI responses, and service logs. Find out how long each is retained, whether you can delete it, whether it is shared with subprocessors, and whether it may be used to improve or train models. Check the current privacy notice and terms for both providers; the answers depend on those product-specific disclosures and any applicable agreement.
Financial data privacy and governance are recognized AI concerns. FINRA’s June 27, 2024 Regulatory Notice 24-09 discusses accuracy, privacy, bias, intellectual property, and exploitation risks in the context of member firms’ use of generative AI; it does not certify consumer tools or establish the terms of a particular connection. How does it show errors, uncertainty, and stale information?
Ask whether the tool timestamps holdings and prices, flags incomplete or delayed account data, and explains the basis for its answers. If it cannot tell you when account information was last updated or what information it used, do not treat a confident-sounding answer as proof that it reflects your current portfolio.
Verify important figures and activity against brokerage statements and records. FINRA identifies accuracy, bias, and misleading-data risks; its industry report also notes that market conditions outside a model’s training can undermine predictions. AI output is not a substitute for checking account records or seeking appropriate professional advice. FINRA report on technology-based investment tools
Can it trade, transfer assets, or act without your approval?
Ask directly whether the integration can place trades, transfer funds or assets, or change account settings. If it can take any action, establish whether every action requires your explicit approval, what limits apply, how actions are recorded, and how to stop the integration quickly.
Autonomous trading calls for particular scrutiny. FINRA’s industry report describes AI uses in brokerage account management, portfolio management, and trading, including potentially autonomous systems; those examples describe industry activity, not an endorsement of consumer services. The report cautions that unusual circumstances not captured in model training can produce unreliable predictions and unwanted trading behavior. FINRA report on AI in the securities industry

How will you monitor the account and respond to a problem?
Before connecting, learn how to reach the brokerage through a verified channel and where to report unauthorized access or activity. Turn on available alerts for logins, profile changes, trades, and transfers. Use multifactor authentication, a unique password, and a passkey if the brokerage supports one. Alert and authentication options differ among firms. SEC guidance on protecting online investment accounts

If something looks wrong, contact the brokerage using its official site or app, not a link or phone number sent by an unexpected message. Revoke the AI service’s access using the available brokerage or provider controls, then follow the brokerage’s instructions for securing the account and reviewing recent activity.

Compare the services on the same practical points rather than relying on labels such as “secure,” “smart,” or “read-only.” Regulatory guidance identifies issues worth asking about, but it does not rank consumer AI products or verify a specific integration.
