The $30-a-user-per-month figure refers to Microsoft 365 Copilot—not the separate chat product announced alongside it in 2023. Microsoft now lists that Copilot license at $30 per user per month with annual billing for enterprise customers, while eligible Microsoft 365 subscribers can get Copilot Chat included. The right comparison depends on whether employees need AI grounded in company work data, not just web-based chat.
Where the $30 figure came from
On July 18, 2023, Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot would cost $30 per user per month when broadly available. The announcement named customers on Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Standard, and Business Premium plans. That was a historical announcement, not a statement that every business chat assistant cost $30 or that the same terms applied to every customer.
Microsoft also announced Bing Chat Enterprise in the same post. It was a distinct work-focused chat product, described as included with certain subscriptions during preview, with a planned $5 standalone offer. It should not be confused with the $30 Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft’s announcement said Bing Chat Enterprise provided commercial data protection and that chat data was not saved, was not accessible to Microsoft through “eyes-on” review, and would not be used to train models. Those were Microsoft’s claims about that announced product at the time; they do not establish the privacy terms for every current Copilot Chat feature or configuration.
What Microsoft lists now
Microsoft’s enterprise pricing page, checked September 28, 2026, lists Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month when paid yearly. It requires a separate qualifying Microsoft 365 plan. The page also distinguishes the included Copilot Chat option from the paid license. See Microsoft’s enterprise Copilot pricing for current eligibility and terms.

Business pricing is a separate offer, not a simple restatement of the enterprise price. Microsoft’s business page, checked September 28, 2026, showed the following figures paid yearly. Its displayed discount offer runs July 1 through September 30, 2026, so these are dated offer prices, not necessarily recurring prices after that period:
| Microsoft business offer | Displayed price per user per month | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business | Starting at $18 and $21 | Paid yearly; displayed discount offer through September 30, 2026. See Microsoft’s business pricing page for plan and eligibility details. |
| Business Standard with Copilot | $23.50 | Bundled plan, paid yearly; displayed discount offer through September 30, 2026. See Microsoft’s business pricing page. |
| Business Premium with Copilot | $32 | Bundled plan, paid yearly; displayed discount offer through September 30, 2026. See Microsoft’s business pricing page. |
Prices and available features can depend on plan, billing, offer, market, and tenant configuration. Check the applicable Microsoft page for the customer’s region and the exact subscription before budgeting; do not treat the listed promotional business amounts as universal or permanent.

What included Copilot Chat does—and does not—do
Microsoft describes Copilot Chat as secure AI chat grounded in the web, with file uploads, other chat tools, and access to metered agents. Microsoft Learn says it is not grounded in an organization’s files, emails, or chats by default. Users may provide or select content, work with open content in supported apps, or use an agent that has organizational access, but those are distinct ways of supplying work context rather than default grounding across company data.
A Microsoft 365 Copilot license adds chat grounded in work sources, Copilot in more Microsoft 365 applications, and broader agent capabilities. Microsoft’s license options documentation and Copilot Chat overview describe the differences. Feature access can vary with the license, tenant settings, and market; an organization should confirm its own configuration.

How to decide whether the paid license is worth budgeting for
Start with the work employees need the assistant to do. If web-grounded chat and user-supplied files meet the need, an eligible subscription’s included Copilot Chat may be enough. If staff need answers grounded in organizational work sources, more extensive use inside Microsoft 365 apps, or broader agent capabilities, compare those requirements with the paid license before assigning seats.
- Existing subscription: Confirm whether the organization qualifies for included Copilot Chat or for a Copilot Business offer.
- Work-data grounding: Decide whether answers need to draw on company files, email, and chats, rather than web information or content a user supplies.
- Application use: Identify which Microsoft 365 apps and in-app capabilities employees actually need.
- Agents: Check whether the required agents are available, whether use is metered, and what access or configuration they require.
- Billing and offer period: Compare annual billing with any monthly option and account for the end date of a promotion.
- Market and configuration: Verify regional availability and tenant-specific feature access with Microsoft’s business-user eligibility guidance.
Microsoft cited a Work Trend Index figure in its 2023 announcement: “70% say they would delegate as much work as possible to AI according to our Work Trend Index.” That is a figure Microsoft attributed to the index, not a measured customer return on a Copilot subscription. The pricing and product descriptions do not establish that a business will save money or achieve a particular return; the case for paid seats depends on the organization’s tasks, usage, and costs.
