Yes, according to a Bloomberg report published June 24, 2024: Apple rejected Meta’s proposal to integrate Meta’s AI chatbot into the iPhone. The reported talks were brief and preliminary, and Apple and Meta did not publicly confirm the private discussions. The reported privacy concern was part of the explanation, not a confirmed or exclusive reason.
What Bloomberg reported about the proposed partnership
Bloomberg reported that Meta had approached Apple about integrating its chatbot into iPhone software, and that Apple rejected the overture months before the report appeared. A contemporaneous account described a brief discussion in March 2024 that did not progress to formal talks. These details come from reporting based on people familiar with the matter, not an on-record statement by either company. Bloomberg’s June 24, 2024 report
Why did Apple reportedly turn Meta down?
Contemporaneous coverage said Apple reportedly did not consider Meta’s privacy practices sufficiently stringent. That is a reported factor, not a direct explanation from Apple, and the available reporting does not establish it as the sole reason for the decision.
Apple’s public privacy messaging offers context, but it does not prove the motive behind the reported decision. At its June 2024 keynote, Apple executive Craig Federighi said: “You should not have to hand over all the details of your life to be warehoused and analyzed in someone’s AI cloud.” That statement expressed Apple’s general privacy position; it was not presented as an explanation of the Meta discussions. What Apple announced for AI on iOS instead
At WWDC on June 10, 2024, Apple announced Apple Intelligence for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Apple said it was starting with ChatGPT integration and intended to support other AI models in the future. That public multi-model plan does not establish that Apple later reconsidered a Meta partnership.
Apple described the ChatGPT flow as permission-based: users would be asked before a request or information was shared with ChatGPT. Users with ChatGPT subscriptions could connect their accounts to access paid features. The keynote also said Siri handled 1.5 billion voice requests each day; that was a figure stated by Apple, not an independently audited measure of the Meta proposal or its prospects. How Apple described its privacy architecture
Apple said many Apple Intelligence tasks would be processed on device, while more complex requests could use Private Cloud Compute on Apple silicon servers. Apple said data sent to that system would not be retained or exposed. These are Apple’s descriptions and claims about its own system; they do not independently establish how Meta’s proposed integration would have worked or why Apple rejected it.
