Gandhi urged merchants to pair commercial success with generosity and to contribute to the society where they lived. At a 1927 address to the Reddiar Sangam in Colombo, a later historical account attributes to him this image: “Since you are earning your bread in this beautiful island, I would ask you to live as sugar lives in milk.” The metaphor suggests belonging through a positive contribution, not merely earning a living.
Gandhi’s 1927 visit involved several audiences
Gandhi visited Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, in November 1927. A chronology records his arrival in Colombo on November 12 and his return to Colombo on November 22, when he addressed the Parsis, the Ceylon National Congress and others. He also met a Chettiar community gathering on November 13; the High Commission of India describes his travels as extensive across the island. The Gandhi chronology and the High Commission’s account provide the visit’s context.

These were distinct gatherings, not a single speech to a unified Indian business organization. The audiences matter: the surviving remarks discussed here come from different occasions and should not be merged into one address.

In his November 22 address to the Ceylon National Congress in Colombo, Gandhi acknowledged the community’s business capacity and its ability to make fortunes. He then emphasized what he considered the stronger basis of its reputation: “You are known for your business capacity and your people have made fortunes wherever they have gone. But remember that it is not their riches but their large-hearted charity that made them famous.” The address appears in volume 35 of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, available through the Gandhi Heritage Portal.

The point is not that earning wealth is wrong. Rather, in this passage, wealth alone does not establish public worth: generosity is what Gandhi says made the community famous. Read as an ethical appeal to merchants, it makes prosperity carry a responsibility to others.
The sugar-in-milk image is a separate reported appeal
A 2024 Scroll.in historical article attributes the sugar-in-milk sentence to Gandhi’s address to the Reddiar Sangam in Colombo. It interprets the image as an appeal to live harmoniously and contribute to the society in which one earns a livelihood.

This wording should be attributed to that later account: the direct text of the Reddiar Sangam address has not been established here. The article identifies Mahadev Desai’s With Gandhiji in Ceylon as relevant reading, but the quoted passage is not independently confirmed against Desai’s original account here.
What the lessons do—and do not—say about business
Taken together, the two reported messages offer a compact moral principle: commercial ability and prosperity should go alongside charity and a constructive relationship with the surrounding society. The charity passage is in the Collected Works; the idea of social contribution is an interpretation of the later-reported metaphor.

These historical remarks are qualitative appeals, not a detailed program for modern corporate social responsibility, governance or financial management. They do not specify targets, policies or measures for businesses today. Their relevance is ethical rather than technical: they ask what a community gives back, not simply what it earns.
For context beyond these merchant and community addresses, the Archives of Indian Labour catalogs Gandhi’s Colombo Labour Union speech as published in The Ceylon Daily News on November 17, 1927. That record reflects the breadth of his visit, but it is a separate address and not evidence for the merchant-focused quotations above: Archives of Indian Labour.
