“Fishing industry” covers four different kinds of work: catching fish at sea, raising fish and other aquatic life, processing seafood for sale, and a wider set of supporting jobs in distribution, charter operations, and government fisheries work. The duties, work settings, and pay of each differ, so the answer depends on which part of the industry you mean. The most detailed occupational data available is for the United States, and this guide uses U.S. examples throughout.
The four job families
Commercial fishing
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) treats commercial fishing as distinct from recreational fishing. Within commercial fishing, the two core jobs are deckhand and captain. Charter-boat workers are not counted as fishers; BLS places them under water transportation occupations.
Aquaculture
Aquaculture means raising and harvesting fish and other aquatic life under controlled conditions, such as in ponds or confined bodies of water. BLS states that it is “a different field” from catching wild fish. It is a related career track rather than another name for commercial fishing, and the day-to-day work of tending stock differs from hauling a catch at sea.
Seafood processing
Processing workers cut, trim, and prepare seafood, along with meat and poultry, for wholesale and retail sale. This work happens in processing facilities and does not require going to sea. For many people, it is the most accessible entry point into the seafood economy, though the sources cited here do not establish whether it is more or less seasonal than vessel work at a given plant.

Supporting and related roles
A broader view of the sector includes distribution, food service, and fishing-gear manufacturing, which NOAA Fisheries groups among the wider supported-employment categories in its Fisheries Economics of the United States overview. A job in these areas can be part of the seafood economy without being classified as a fishing occupation in labor statistics.
Regional materials also show local variety. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Careers in Alaska’s Seafood Industry points to fisheries-related government and private-sector roles, including fishing guides. These examples describe Alaska and should not be read as a national list.

Commercial fishing roles in detail
Deckhand
Deckhands do hands-on work aboard commercial vessels. Their tasks include baiting hooks, setting lines or traps, hauling and sorting the catch, and maintaining the vessel and fishing gear. The work is operational: deckhands carry out the plan rather than set it.
Captain
Captains plan and oversee the trip. Their decisions cover target species, fishing grounds, capture method, trip length, and how the catch will be sold. They supervise the crew and keep the vessel’s logs. Captaincy therefore combines seamanship with business judgment, and it usually follows experience on deck.

How the job families compare
| Job family | Typical work setting | Core work | Seasonality and physical demands (as stated by the cited source) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deckhand | Commercial fishing vessel | Baiting, setting lines or traps, hauling and sorting catch, maintaining vessel and gear | BLS describes fishing tasks as strenuous and notes that many fishers are seasonal workers. |
| Captain | Commercial fishing vessel | Planning the trip and sales, supervising crew, keeping vessel logs | Not stated separately for captains in the cited BLS profile. |
| Aquaculture worker | Ponds or confined bodies of water | Raising and harvesting fish and other aquatic life under controlled conditions | Not stated in the cited BLS profile. |
| Seafood processing worker | Processing facility; no vessel required | Cutting, trimming, and preparing seafood for wholesale and retail sale | Not stated for seafood processing in the cited BLS profile. |
| Charter-boat worker | Charter vessel serving paying customers | Customer-facing vessel work | Classified by BLS under water transportation occupations, not fishing occupations. |
Seasonal and physical realities
BLS notes that “many fishers are seasonal workers, and those jobs are usually filled by students and by people from other occupations who are available for seasonal work, such as teachers.” Seasonality is a feature of many fishing jobs, not a rule for the whole industry. Do not assume that aquaculture, processing, or management roles follow the same pattern without checking the specific employer.
U.S. employment outlook
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that employment for its fishing and hunting worker group will decline 4 percent from 2025 to 2035. It also projects about 3,300 openings per year on average over that decade. Those openings come mainly from workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force, such as through retirement, rather than from new positions. The projection covers a combined group that includes hunting, so it should not be read as a forecast for every job in the fishing industry. The BLS profile for fishers is at Fishing and Hunting Workers: Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Why the total-employment figures do not agree
Industry-wide job counts are less settled than the occupational projection. NOAA Fisheries’ Fisheries Economics of the United States reports page, dated February 2026, says a 2023 fisheries-related jobs estimate was revised downward from 1.4 million to 1 million after a code correction. NOAA’s overview page separately reports 1.7 million jobs supported in 2023. The two pages do not explain the difference in scope or version. Before quoting either total, check the revised report’s tables and definitions.

The sources cited here do not establish a general wage figure, a national licensing rule, or a worldwide qualification standard for these jobs. Pay and credentials depend on the job, the vessel or employer, and the jurisdiction. Choosing a path with your budget in mind
- Work setting: Decide whether you want to work at sea, on a farm or hatchery, in a processing plant, or in an office or customer-facing role.
- Income pattern: If a job is seasonal, plan for months with little or no pay. Build a cash buffer or identify off-season work before you commit.
- Physical demands: Vessel work and processing involve strenuous tasks, so consider your fitness and any health limits before applying.
- Local requirements: Confirm licenses, safety training, and permits with the authority in the place where you intend to work.
- Local pay and advancement: Ask employers for pay ranges and how people move from crew to lead or management roles.
Start with the job family that matches your setting and budget, then verify the local details. The outlook, the seasonal pattern, and the credentials all vary by role, so a single answer for “the fishing industry” would be misleading.
