Upselling is an offer to move a customer to a higher-priced version, upgrade or service level of the product or service they are considering. A good upsell explains what the extra cost buys and leaves the customer free to keep the original option.

What upselling means

In everyday business use, upselling means proposing a more capable or higher-value version of the same basic purchase. A seller might offer a product with greater capacity, a more feature-rich plan or an upgrade to a service. The offer should relate to what the customer is already considering, rather than simply add something unrelated.

There is also a narrower legal meaning in the United States. Under the Federal Trade Commission’s Telemarketing Sales Rule guidance, upselling refers to soliciting goods or services after an initial transaction during the same telephone call. The FTC distinguishes an internal upsell, made by the same seller, from an external upsell, made by a different seller. That rule-specific definition applies to covered telemarketing; it is not a universal definition for every type of sale.

Upselling vs. cross-selling

These terms describe different offer patterns in common business usage. An upsell proposes a higher tier or version of the purchase under consideration. A cross-sell proposes a related but distinct product. For instance, offering a larger-capacity version of a device is an upsell; offering a compatible accessory is a cross-sell.

Examples of an upsell

  • More capacity: A customer considering a smaller storage option is shown a larger one, with the price difference and practical benefit explained.
  • A higher service tier: Someone comparing plans is offered a tier with additional features relevant to their stated use.
  • An upgrade: A customer considering a standard product is offered a more capable version, along with a clear account of what it adds and costs.

These are general illustrations, not claims about a particular product or the likely sales impact of an offer.

How to make an upsell useful and transparent

  1. Start with the customer’s stated need. Offer an upgrade only when its added features or service level address something the customer has said matters to them.
  2. Compare the real options. Explain the added capability, the incremental price and the total cost. Include relevant restrictions or conditions so the customer can judge the difference.
  3. Make the choice optional. Let the customer keep the original selection or decline the upgrade without pressure.
  4. Show mandatory charges clearly. Do not make an option appear cheaper by leaving required fees out of the price presented where price-transparency rules apply.

There is no sales-lift figure established here for these techniques. Treat them as ways to support an informed choice, not as guaranteed methods for increasing conversions or revenue.

Disclosure rules depend on where and how you sell

Covered US telemarketing

For covered telemarketing transactions, the FTC says sellers and telemarketers must provide material information before payment, including total costs, quantity and material restrictions. Disclosures must be clear and conspicuous. A restriction is material when knowing it would likely affect a consumer’s decision to buy, buy at the offered price or buy from that seller. The FTC’s May 31, 2006 staff advisory opinion discusses a scenario in which a completed customer-service call could count as the initial transaction for a later telephone offer. The details concern that scenario; they should not be treated as a blanket rule for all sales channels.

Applicable UK purchase invitations

The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s price-transparency summary, updated January 7, 2026, says prices must be clear, complete and accurate. In applicable invitations to purchase, the total price should be provided up front, including mandatory charges. This is UK guidance summarizing relevant provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024; it should not be generalized to other jurisdictions.

For other marketing questions, the FTC maintains an Advertising and Marketing Basics resource. The rules that apply to a particular upsell depend on the transaction, channel and jurisdiction.
