Uber’s robotaxi partnership combines Lucid electric vehicles, Nuro’s autonomous-driving system and Uber’s ride-hailing platform. Uber initially invested $300 million in Lucid and agreed to a conditional minimum commitment for 20,000 modified Gravity vehicles. In April 2026, Lucid announced an expanded commitment of at least 35,000 vehicles, including future Midsize models, and said Uber’s total investment had reached $500 million. The companies planned to launch first in the Bay Area, but the available dated announcements do not confirm that the service was live by October 5, 2026.

What is Uber’s deal with Lucid and Nuro?

Announced on July 17, 2025, the partnership is a planned robotaxi fleet program, not a consumer car sale. Lucid supplies specially modified electric vehicles, Nuro develops and validates the autonomous-driving system, and Uber provides the app-based rider experience and access to its ride-hailing network. Uber or third-party fleet partners are expected to own and operate the vehicles, which are to be offered through Uber’s platform. Uber’s announcement described an intended deployment of 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro Driver over six years in multiple markets.

The division of work is meant to join three different capabilities: a vehicle platform, autonomy technology and a passenger-and-fleet network. Lucid is responsible for the vehicle and factory integration of robotaxi hardware; Nuro leads autonomy development, testing and validation; Uber designs the rider experience and connects trips to its service. Hertz Oro was also named by Uber as a day-to-day asset-management provider, supporting tasks such as charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning and depot staffing.

How much is Uber investing, and how many vehicles are involved?

The investment figures and vehicle commitments have grown since the original announcement. They are announced financing and purchase commitments, not evidence that the vehicles have been delivered or are carrying passengers.

Announcement Investment Vehicle commitment What it means
July 2025 $300 million private placement investment by an Uber subsidiary in Lucid Contractual minimum of 20,000 modified Gravity vehicles over six years after production starts The minimum guarantee is conditional on requirements including Lucid’s production capacity, quality thresholds and timely order fulfillment. Lucid’s 2025 SEC filing describes the commitment and conditions; the filing also records the investment.
April 14, 2026 An additional $200 million, taking Uber’s announced total investment in Lucid to $500 million At least 35,000 vehicles, including Gravity and future Midsize vehicles Lucid announced the expanded commitment and investment; they are plans and commitments, not completed purchases or deliveries. Lucid’s April 2026 announcement gives the updated figures.

The original SEC filing said production was targeted for late 2026. It also said the $300 million proceeds would support non-recurring engineering costs associated with Gravity Plus vehicle design, development, manufacture and delivery, as well as general corporate purposes. That use-of-proceeds description pertains to the initial investment, not necessarily the additional $200 million announced later.

What will the Uber-Lucid robotaxi be like?

The production-intent vehicle shown by the partners is based on Lucid’s Gravity SUV. The companies described a sensor suite combining cameras, lidar and radar, integrated into the vehicle and a roof-mounted halo. Its proposed cabin can seat up to six passengers and includes space for luggage. The announced configuration uses NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor computing hardware. These are company-described features, not independent findings about safety or real-world performance. The partners’ January 2026 update describes the production-intent design and testing.

  • Passenger controls: Interactive screens were described for comfort settings, music, contacting support and requesting a stop.
  • Trip information: An in-vehicle display is intended to show the vehicle’s perceived surroundings and planned path.

The companies have not established through these announcements how the final public-service configuration may differ from the production-intent vehicle or how the described features perform in service.

Where and when are the robotaxis expected to operate?

Bay Area: planned first market

The Bay Area was named as the intended first deployment market, with a launch expected later in 2026 and subject to validation. In January 2026, the partners said supervised autonomous on-road testing had begun in December 2025, alongside closed-course testing and simulation. Their update does not establish that the service subsequently opened to the public. Uber’s August 2026 prepared remarks referred generally to preparations for multiple U.S. launches, but did not specifically confirm a launch of this Lucid-Nuro service. Uber’s Q2 2026 results materials therefore should not be read as confirmation that these robotaxis were operating.

Houston: planned second market

Uber named Houston as the second planned market on June 17, 2026, with service expected to launch in mid-2027. The announcement described supervised on-road testing in both Houston and the Bay Area and a 50,000-square-foot Houston depot. That facility size is an announced infrastructure detail, not a measure of fleet size or service availability. Uber’s Houston announcement set out the timing and depot plan.

What does “Nuro Driver” mean in this partnership?

Nuro Driver is the autonomy system Nuro is supplying for the vehicles. In this program, Nuro leads its development, testing and validation, while Lucid provides the vehicle platform and Uber the ride-hailing and rider interface. The partners have described supervised on-road testing, as well as closed-course testing and simulation; the announcements do not establish a completed validation program or independently measured safety performance.

What the deal does—and does not—show

The headline numbers describe an ambitious planned fleet and a substantial investment in Lucid, but they are not proof of deployment. The distinction matters because the original minimum vehicle commitment is conditional, the later 35,000-plus figure is an expanded company-announced commitment, and the launch schedules remain plans. The announcements reviewed provide no deal-specific realized ridership or safety-performance statistic. The practical milestone to watch is a dated, partner-specific confirmation that service has opened, rather than a general reference to autonomous-vehicle plans or preparations.
