Yes. On March 11, 2025, President Donald Trump said people who commit violence against Tesla property would be caught and “go through hell.” Contemporary reporting said he also intended to label violence against Tesla dealerships domestic terrorism. That was a public characterization—not a court ruling, criminal charge, or proof that any particular incident met the federal statute’s definition.
What Trump said about attacks on Tesla
Trump made the remarks at a March 11, 2025, White House event with Elon Musk and Tesla vehicles. TechCrunch, citing a transcript shared by White House pool reporters, reported that Trump said he would label violence against Tesla dealerships domestic terrorism. He also said: “And let me tell you,” Trump continued. “You do it to Tesla, and you do it to any company, we’re going to catch you, and you’re going to go through hell.” (TechCrunch, March 11, 2025)
A president’s statement about how he will label conduct does not itself establish a crime or determine that statutory criteria have been met. Those questions depend on the law and evidence in a particular case.
What federal law means by domestic terrorism
Federal law defines “domestic terrorism” in 18 U.S.C. § 2331(5) through three elements. The activity must:

- Appear intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence government policy by intimidation or coercion, or affect government conduct through mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
- Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
The statutory text is available at 18 U.S.C. § 2331(5). Property damage or a political label alone does not establish every element; whether the definition applies requires case-specific evidence.
How the FBI and DOJ described Tesla-related incidents
FBI alert: a dated account of incidents
In a public alert dated March 21, 2025, the FBI said that since January, incidents targeting Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations had occurred in at least nine states. It described arson, gunfire, and vandalism, and said: “These criminal actions appear to have been conducted by lone offenders, and all known incidents occurred at night.” That is the Bureau’s assessment in that alert, not a current total or a final attribution of every incident. DOJ language and the charges it announced
On March 18, 2025, Attorney General Pamela Bondi described attacks on Tesla property as “nothing short of domestic terrorism.” (DOJ, March 18, 2025) On March 20, DOJ announced charges against three people accused of using Molotov cocktails to set fire to Tesla cars and charging stations. The release listed criminal offenses and potential penalties; an announcement of charges is not a conviction. (DOJ, March 20, 2025)
Las Vegas complaint: arson and firearm counts
In a March 27, 2025, release about a Las Vegas incident, DOJ said Paul Hyon Kim had been charged by criminal complaint with arson and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm. The listed counts were not a charge called domestic terrorism. DOJ said the complaint contains allegations and that Kim is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. (DOJ, March 27, 2025)

Later federal memorandum did not decide the March cases
On September 25, 2025, Trump issued a memorandum on countering domestic terrorism and organized political violence. It directs investigations and prosecution of federal crimes under applicable law and says the attorney general may recommend a qualifying group or entity for designation as a domestic terrorist organization. The memorandum does not document a designation of Tesla attackers and does not resolve the earlier individual prosecutions. (White House, September 25, 2025)

The cited announcements do not establish final outcomes for the prosecutions, a later consolidated national count of Tesla-related incidents, or a formal domestic-terrorist designation of Tesla attackers. A charge is an allegation to be resolved through the legal process, and official rhetoric should not be mistaken for that process’s outcome.
