ITR-4, also called Sugam, is an optional simplified income-tax return for certain resident individuals, HUFs, and resident firms other than LLPs whose business or professional income is computed under presumptive taxation. For eligible filers it can simplify reporting. It does not, by itself, reduce your tax. Whether it saves money depends on your income, your deductions, the tax regime you choose, and the law for the year you are filing.
What ITR-4 is
ITR-4 is one of the income-tax return forms the Income Tax Department publishes each year. It is written for taxpayers who earn business or professional income that is calculated under the presumptive taxation provisions instead of through full bookkeeping. The department’s overview for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 sets a total-income ceiling of ₹50 lakh for the form, subject to the conditions listed on that page. The form is optional. A taxpayer who meets the conditions may still choose a different form.
Who can use it
The department’s AY 2026-27 overview describes possible eligibility for three groups: resident individuals and HUFs, individuals who are non-resident but not ordinarily resident, and resident firms other than LLPs. Each must have total income up to ₹50 lakh and qualifying presumptive income under section 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE. Work through the following questions in order.
- Are you in an eligible category? Resident individual, HUF, non-resident-but-not-ordinarily-resident individual, or resident firm other than an LLP.
- Is your total income up to ₹50 lakh? The overview states this ceiling for AY 2026-27.
- Is your business or professional income presumptive? It must be computed under section 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE. Having a business is not enough on its own. Running a business does not make you eligible automatically.
- Do any of the exclusions below apply? If one does, the form is unavailable to you regardless of the answers above.
- If all answers are favourable, ITR-4 is a candidate. If any answer is unclear, use the department’s form-selection tool described later in this article.
Other income you can report alongside presumptive income
The overview lists additional income that ITR-4 can carry. Each item is subject to the conditions on the department’s page:

#1 Best Overall
- Salary or pension
- One house property
- Income from other sources
- Agricultural income up to ₹5,000
- Section 112A long-term capital gains up to ₹1.25 lakh
Situations that rule the form out
According to the same overview, ITR-4 is not available in several situations. The online manual also limits the form to one house property. The main exclusions are:
- Holding a directorship in a company
- Short-term capital gains
- Section 112A long-term capital gains above ₹1.25 lakh
- Unlisted equity shares
- Foreign assets or foreign income, including signing authority over a foreign account
- Deferred ESOP tax
- Brought-forward or carried-forward losses
- Total income above ₹50 lakh
These are screening rules, not a complete test. The department states that its overview is not exhaustive, so check the current-year instructions against your own facts before you commit to the form.
How presumptive taxation changes the calculation
Presumptive schemes let you declare income using a prescribed percentage of your receipts rather than your actual profit. The notified ITR-4 for AY 2023-24 shows the calculations below. Those figures belong to that year’s form. Confirm the rates for AY 2026-27 in the current instructions before relying on them.
| Section | Calculation shown on the AY 2023-24 notified ITR-4 | AY 2026-27 status |
|---|---|---|
| 44AD | 6% of qualifying electronic receipts and 8% of other receipts, or the higher amount you claim as actually earned | Confirm current rates in the current-year instructions |
| 44ADA | 50% of gross receipts, or the higher amount you claim as actually earned | Confirm current rates in the current-year instructions |
| 44AE | Not stated in the cited department pages | Eligibility listed in the AY 2026-27 overview; calculation not stated there |
The same historic form warns that if your declared income falls below the prescribed percentages, you may need a tax audit and a different ITR form. Treat the presumptive route as a rule-based calculation that has limits, not a default you can pick freely.

Does ITR-4 actually save money?
ITR-4 can make reporting simpler for someone who qualifies. It does not promise a lower tax bill. The tax you owe depends on several factors that the form cannot change:
- Whether your activity and receipts actually fit the presumptive section you are using
- Your actual receipts and income for the year
- The deductions you are entitled to claim
- The tax regime that applies to you
- The law in force for the relevant assessment year
Comparing ITR-4 with regular business or professional reporting means comparing eligibility, the income calculation allowed for your activity, recordkeeping and audit consequences, and total tax after deductions and regime choice. The department’s pages establish that eligibility and calculation rules differ. They do not show which method will be cheaper for any particular taxpayer, so run the numbers for your own case.

How to confirm the right form and file it
Use the department’s form-selection service
The Income Tax Department offers a service titled “Help me decide which ITR form to file.” Its wizard asks questions and recommends a form based on your answers. Its prompts include “Still not clear, let us help you.” Answer carefully, because the recommendation is only as accurate as the information you give. The department’s guidance on identifying the applicable ITR is available at the applicable ITR identification FAQ.
Choose a filing route
- Online filing through the department’s ITR-4 online filing manual, which is published at the ITR-4 online filing manual.
- Offline utility for AY 2026-27, which the department makes available alongside online filing.
- Third-party software, which the manual also mentions. Confirm that any software you use produces the current-year form.
The portal reported ITR-1 through ITR-7, including ITR-4, as available through online and offline utilities for AY 2026-27. Check the portal for updates at the Income Tax Department portal.

Check the deadline and the governing law
A portal update dated September 29, 2026 says a deadline extension applies to specified taxpayers. It does not apply to every filer. Confirm whether you fall in that category and check the latest official deadline before you file.
The department’s live portal also indicates that the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from Tax Year 2026-27 onwards. Some AY 2026-27 ITR-4 guidance still refers to the Income-tax Act, 1961. Do not assume that rules carry over between years or between the two Acts. Confirm the applicable law, notification, thresholds, and form version on the official site.
Verify the key figures for your own year
The figures in this article come from the department’s AY 2026-27 overview (₹50 lakh total income, ₹5,000 agricultural income, ₹1.25 lakh under section 112A) and from the notified AY 2023-24 form (6%, 8%, and 50%). The first set is current-year guidance. The second is historical. Confirm both against the official pages before filing, because thresholds and percentages can change from one year to the next.
Return applicability overview for AY 2026-27 is the primary source for the eligibility rules described above. The notified AY 2023-24 ITR-4 form is available at the notified ITR-4 form for AY 2023-24.
