The figure depends on which games you count, the country and currency, whether you mean list prices or sale prices, and when prices are measured. For a recent but narrower benchmark, a reported analysis of top-selling new Steam releases found that their mean first-month price declined 2% from February 2023 to October 2025, while the median fell more sharply. That sample is not the full Steam catalog.
Why there is no one average Steam game price
An average is only useful when its population and method are clear. A catalog-wide calculation would need to specify which products count as games, which storefront region is being measured, whether it uses regular or discounted prices, and the date of the snapshot. The available sources do not establish a current, globally representative mean or median for all Steam games.

It also matters whether “average” means the mean or the median. The mean adds all prices and divides by the number of titles, so a small number of expensive games can pull it upward. The median is the midpoint after prices are ordered and is less affected by unusually high or low prices. Neither statistic says what a particular player will pay during a sale.
A recent benchmark for popular new releases
GameDiscoverCo analysis reported by GamesRadar looked at the first month of sales for the top 50 new, non-free-to-play Steam releases per month from February 2023 through October 2025. It found declines in both mean and median price over that period, but the size differed by statistic and by how releases were ranked:

These percentages describe the selected top-selling new-release sample in the reported analysis, not every game on Steam or the amount customers paid after discounts. They are changes over the stated period, not a current average price in dollars. GamesRadar’s report of the GameDiscoverCo analysis was published November 24, 2025.
Why Steam prices differ by region
Steam’s regional pricing system means a game does not necessarily have one equivalent price worldwide. Valve says developers choose the prices they enter for each currency and region group. Steam lists prices across 37 currencies and four region groups, and its pricing explorer presents exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable conversion approaches. The multi-variable approach considers purchasing power, comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rates; the displayed conversion methods use public data as of January 2026. Valve’s Steamworks regional pricing documentation explains the options.

SteamDB’s account of Valve’s March 2026 pricing update says developers can choose among the conversion methods, combine them across markets, or set prices themselves. The methods can yield materially different regional prices for the same base-price tier, according to SteamDB’s March 31, 2026 explanation. This is SteamDB’s account of the update, not a catalog-wide price comparison.
How to judge the price of a specific Steam game
If the practical question is whether one game is a good deal, its own price history is more useful than a platform-wide average. Check the game’s current price in your storefront region and compare it with its earlier prices. Include the region and date when sharing a comparison, since prices and discounts change.

- Open the game’s app page on SteamDB.
- Review the price table and graph for the relevant region and currency.
- Compare the current price with earlier recorded prices, noting the date and region of the comparison.
SteamDB’s FAQ describes its app-page price table and history graph. SteamDB says its data is provided as-is, without guarantees of accuracy, completeness, or timeliness, so treat tracker records as a useful reference rather than a guarantee.
A separate tracker page describes daily recording for 100 games beginning July 2, 2026, alongside live checks in multiple regions. What a new game’s price can signal
Price is only one part of a game’s value: players may weigh genre, expected playtime, reviews, and the alternatives available at similar prices. In GamesRadar’s report, GameDiscoverCo’s Simon Carless offered a pricing observation specifically about new intellectual property: “We think if you have a new IP you’re making from scratch, isn’t a deep strategy game, and isn’t from a pedigreed team, charging >$25 is getting trickier, as players compare value to the $10-$15 indie titles that have brought them a ton of fun and playtime. Or to the $60-$70 megafranchise titles.” This is commentary on a particular pricing challenge, not a universal rule for what a Steam game should cost.
