STEP up for Agriculture is a North American initiative announced by PepsiCo, Unilever and other major companies on September 18, 2025. It is designed to strengthen organizations that work directly with farmers—not to deliver one standardized farming package to every farm. Its planned support includes organizational strategy, staff and training capacity, measurement systems, implementation support, and help building partnerships or revenue streams.
How STEP up for Agriculture is intended to work
STEP stands for Supporting Trusted Engagement and Partnership. The companies describe it as a pre-competitive initiative: corporate and philanthropic partners are to support farmer-facing organizations so those groups can better advise and work with farmers. The launch announcement says trusted local relationships matter to adoption; that is the initiative’s rationale, not an independent evaluation of its effectiveness. PepsiCo’s September 18, 2025 announcement describes the program and its initial partners.
Planned support for participating organizations
The announcement lists areas of intended support, rather than confirmed completed deliverables or guaranteed farm-level results:
- Develop business and strategic plans.
- Expand staffing and training capacity.
- Establish measurement, reporting, and verification systems.
- Increase capacity to implement programs and work with farmers.
- Access new revenue streams and partnerships.
Which organizations were named for Phase I?
The launch announcement names three farmer-facing support partners. It describes their roles and service areas as follows:

| Practical Farmers of Iowa | Supports farmers across western Canada and the United States. |
| Farm Advisor | An Indiana-based, farmer-led initiative that pairs experienced conservation farmers with peers. |
The announcement also identifies PepsiCo and Unilever among the lead corporate partners, with The Platform for Agriculture and Climate Transformation (PACT) and the PepsiCo Foundation as philanthropic partners. It does not provide farmer eligibility rules, funding amounts for each Phase I organization, or a verified schedule for delivering the planned support.
How the companies’ agriculture targets differ
STEP is connected to broader company commitments, but the targets have different units and scopes. PepsiCo’s launch announcement says it aims to drive adoption of regenerative, restorative, or protective practices across 10 million acres by 2030. Unilever says it is committed to rolling out regenerative agriculture principles across 1 million hectares globally by 2030. These are each company’s stated goals, not a shared STEP target.

What PepsiCo’s 2026 acreage figure does—and does not—show
In a July 1, 2026 update, PepsiCo reported expanding regenerative, restorative, and protective practices to 4.7 million acres globally toward its broader 10-million-acre 2030 goal. The figure is company-reported progress across PepsiCo’s wider agriculture efforts. The update does not isolate acres or outcomes attributable to STEP, so it should not be read as a measured result of this initiative. PepsiCo’s 2026 progress announcement provides the company’s reported figure.

What farmers should understand about the program
“Regenerative agriculture” is a broad umbrella in the launch announcement. PepsiCo names soil health, emissions, biodiversity, watershed health, and farmer livelihoods among the outcomes it seeks, but those aims are not proof that STEP has achieved them. The available announcements establish the initiative’s design and companies’ goals; they do not provide an independent program evaluation or a STEP-specific acreage result.
STEP’s approach is to build the capacity of organizations already working with farmers. The named partners may be useful starting points for learning about peer support and conservation advice in their service areas, but the announcement does not set out a universal application process or promise that every farmer can access the same services.
