Semrush is a subscription-based digital-marketing intelligence platform. Its core tools cover keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, backlink research, technical site audits, and content optimization. The platform also offers advertising, local marketing, traffic research, social, and visibility tracking for AI-generated search results.
Semrush collects and models information from search results, crawled websites, backlinks, advertising data, and connected services. It turns that information into estimates, comparisons, alerts, recommendations, and reports. It does not change your Google rankings, reveal a competitor’s private analytics, or guarantee traffic and sales.
What is Semrush?
Semrush is a cloud software platform for researching, monitoring, and reporting on online visibility. Although many people still write “SEMrush,” the company generally styles the brand as Semrush.
In practical terms, Semrush helps answer questions such as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →#1 Best Overall
- Which search terms might be valuable for a business?
- Which pages and topics appear to drive a competitor’s visibility?
- Which technical problems should a website owner investigate?
- How are selected rankings changing by location and device?
- How does a brand appear in conventional and AI-powered search?
Semrush describes its current platform across SEO, paid advertising, local marketing, content, market research, social workflows, and AI-search visibility. Its official overview is available at Semrush’s product guide.
It is best understood as a research, monitoring, auditing, and reporting layer—not a search-engine submission service, ranking guarantee, or replacement for first-party analytics.
How Semrush works
1. It gathers data from multiple sources
Semrush combines search-result observations, keyword databases, backlink data, website crawls, advertising intelligence, market estimates, and AI-search measurements. Semrush reports that its professional SEO data set includes more than 28 billion keywords, 43 trillion backlinks, and 289 million AI prompts; those are vendor-reported database figures, not independently audited measurements. See Semrush’s professional SEO page.
Large databases do not make every result equally accurate. Coverage and precision can vary by country, language, niche, device, location, and query type. Search volume, competitor traffic, ad spend, and many “authority” measures are modeled estimates rather than private business records.
2. It crawls and analyzes websites
Site Audit visits pages in a website’s crawlable structure and checks conditions such as broken links, redirects, crawlability, metadata, canonicalization, sitemap signals, internal linking, performance indicators, and structured-data warnings. A Semrush crawl is not Google’s indexing system: Semrush can flag something Google ignores, while Google can know things Semrush cannot see.
3. It estimates demand and competition
Keyword tools use observed search results and modeled metrics to show search terms, related questions, search volume, intent, keyword difficulty, competitors, and SERP features. These figures are useful for prioritization, not promises of future visits or revenue. Keyword difficulty is a proprietary indicator, not an industry-wide standard.
4. It compares domains and competitors
Domain and competitor reports can identify terms for which another site appears to rank, pages associated with that visibility, backlinks, paid keywords, ad copy, and gaps between domains. They cannot reveal a competitor’s private conversion rate, profit margin, exact traffic, or internal strategy.
5. It tracks selected targets over time
Position Tracking monitors a chosen keyword set for selected search engines, locations, devices, and competitors. The current SEO pricing page lists daily tracking limits of 500 keywords for Pro, 1,500 for Guru, and 5,000 for Business: Semrush SEO pricing. Trends are more useful than isolated rank checks, but rankings still vary with geography, device, language, personalization, SERP layout, and time.

Semrush can produce issue lists, content ideas, exports, scheduled reports, integrations, and client-facing reporting. Report add-ons listed on current pricing pages include Base Reports at $10 per month and Pro Reports at $20 per month for several toolkits: SEO and AI Search pricing.
Keep four concepts separate:
- Data: what Semrush observed or estimated.
- Diagnosis: what those findings might mean.
- Recommendation: an action worth considering.
- Outcome: what happened after implementation.
What does Semrush do?
Keyword research
Keyword tools help find related terms, questions, topic groups, commercial opportunities, and lower-competition queries. High volume does not necessarily mean high business value, and a low-difficulty term may attract little qualified demand. Search intent and the usefulness of the resulting page matter more than volume alone.
One comprehensive page can rank for many related terms. Creating one page per keyword can therefore create duplication or keyword cannibalization.
Competitor and domain research
Semrush can reveal apparent search competitors, ranking pages, content gaps, paid keywords, ad messaging, and domain trends. A “search competitor” may be a directory, marketplace, publisher, review site, or government resource rather than a direct business rival.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSite Audit
Site Audit is a triage system, not a universal repair list. Common checks include:
- Broken internal and external links
- Redirect chains and HTTPS issues
- Missing or duplicate titles and descriptions
- Crawlability, indexability, canonical, and sitemap signals
- Internal-linking and orphan-page problems
- Performance indicators and schema warnings
Prioritize issues that block crawling or indexing, break important user journeys, affect many valuable URLs, or have a clear business benefit. A high Site Health score is not a Google ranking factor, and a low score does not mean every warning deserves immediate attention.
Position Tracking
A tracking project normally specifies a domain or subdomain, country or local area, device, search engine, keyword list, competitors, and visibility features. Segment terms into brand, non-brand, product, service, location, commercial, informational, priority-page, and competitor groups. Do not change the keyword set and then mistake the resulting metric change for a performance change.
Backlink analysis and link building
Backlink reports show new and lost referring domains, linked pages, anchor patterns, and possible outreach prospects. Judge links by relevance, editorial placement, page quality, visibility, purpose, and whether they are followed or sponsored—not by raw count.
Semrush “authority” and “toxicity” values are third-party analytical signals, not Google ranking factors. A potentially risky pattern is not proof that a link is harmful, and disavowal should not be automatic.
Content tools
Semrush offers topic research, briefs, on-page recommendations, readability and terminology suggestions, and AI-assisted content workflows. A content score cannot replace first-hand expertise, accurate claims, original reporting, audience fit, useful examples, or human fact-checking.
PPC and advertising research
The Advertising Toolkit supports paid-keyword research, competitor ad analysis, Google Shopping research, and campaign intelligence. The current advertising page lists Base at $99 per month and Pro at $220 per month when billed annually: Advertising Toolkit pricing.
Seeing an ad does not reveal the advertiser’s profit or confirmed budget. Estimated spend can be regional, seasonal, experimental, or outdated and should be checked against the actual advertising platform.

Semrush’s Local toolkit includes listing management, Google Business Profile-related workflows, review management, posting, and map-rank tracking. Current annual-billing prices list Local Base at $30 per month per location and Local Pro at $60 per month per location: Local pricing.
That can suit agencies and multi-location businesses. A single local shop may get better value by maintaining its profile and reviews manually.

Traffic and market research
The Traffic & Market toolkit benchmarks competitor traffic mix, channels, markets, and trends. Its current page lists historical data, coverage across more than 190 countries and regions, analysis of up to 100 competitors, and Pro at $289 per month when billed annually: Traffic & Market pricing.
These are directional market estimates, not financial reporting or a competitor’s confirmed analytics.

AI-search visibility
Semrush markets monitoring for surfaces including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Depending on plan, reports can track custom prompts, mentions, cited sources, sentiment, and AI-related site issues: AI Visibility features.
AI outputs can change with prompt wording, user, geography, model, time, and session. A mention is not necessarily a click or sale; citation tracking is not the same as a traditional ranking; and AI-visibility scores are vendor-defined measurements in an evolving field.

|---|---|
| Finding possible keyword and content opportunities | Proof that estimated volume equals qualified demand |
| Comparing apparent competitor visibility | Exact competitor traffic, revenue, conversion rate, or budget |
| Prioritizing technical investigations | Proof that fixing every warning improves rankings |
| Tracking selected ranking trends | A guarantee of a position or future traffic |
| Investigating backlinks | Proof that a link is harmful or caused a ranking change |
| Monitoring AI-search mentions | A stable measure of AI traffic or sales |

- A price-sensitive user whose free tools answer the immediate question
For first-party Google performance, use Google Search Console. For owned-site behavior and conversions, use Google Analytics. For Google Ads-oriented planning, use Keyword Planner. A technical specialist may prefer Screaming Frog SEO Spider, which offers a free tier for smaller crawls.

How to decide without wasting money
Before subscribing, define three concrete tasks:
- Find 20 commercially relevant topics.
- Compare your site with three genuine search competitors.
- Produce a prioritized technical and content action list.
Then ask whether Semrush revealed information you could not obtain elsewhere, saved enough labor, produced actions someone will implement, and could plausibly justify its cost through leads, revenue, saved time, or client retention. Judge the plan by the limits your workflow actually needs—not by how many dashboards it contains.
Common mistakes
Calling estimates facts
Use ranges, trends, and relative comparisons for competitor traffic, ad spend, and search demand. Validate important assumptions with first-party data and customer or market evidence.
Treating difficulty as a verdict
Inspect the actual SERP: intent, content quality, domain types, backlinks, brands, freshness, and SERP features.
Recommended Free Tools
Fixing every audit warning
Address crawlability, indexability, broken journeys, security, and revenue-critical pages before cosmetic warnings.
Creating content from keyword lists alone
Start with audience need, intent, expertise, product fit, and the action the page should support.
Ignoring location and device
Configure tracking for the actual market, language, location, and device. National desktop data may be irrelevant to a local mobile search.
Assuming AI mentions are stable
Track repeated prompt sets over time and report AI visibility as directional experimentation, not a fixed ranking.
Buying the headline plan
Include extra users, report add-ons, local locations, APIs, additional toolkits, annual commitment, taxes, and regional currency in the real budget.
The Bottom Line
Semrush is worth considering when you need recurring, multi-site, competitive research and have the capacity to act on it. It is usually overkill for a single small site that mainly needs first-party analytics or occasional checks. The useful question is not whether Semrush is “the best” tool, but which recurring decisions it will improve enough to justify its subscription.
