Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a U.S. dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple and designed to track the value of $1. Ripple says each token is backed one-to-one by cash and short-term liquid reserve assets, but that design does not guarantee RLUSD will trade for exactly $1 at every exchange or that every holder can redeem directly with Ripple. RLUSD is not XRP: RLUSD targets a dollar value, while XRP is a market-priced cryptocurrency.
What RLUSD is—and what it is not
RLUSD is a digital token intended to represent one U.S. dollar. It can be transferred on supported blockchain networks and bought or sold through services that list it. Its target value and reserve backing distinguish it from XRP, the market-priced cryptocurrency native to the XRP Ledger. Holding RLUSD is not the same as holding XRP, and neither token’s price behavior should be inferred from the other’s.

“Stablecoin” describes the design goal, not a promise that every trade will clear at exactly $1. Supply and demand, venue liquidity, transfer routes, and access to redemption can affect the price a buyer or seller receives.

How RLUSD is issued and redeemed
Ripple describes direct issuance and redemption as institutional services. Its documented process includes compliance screening; it is not a universal, identical redemption route for every person who acquires RLUSD through an exchange.
#1 Best Overall
Institutional issuance
- An eligible institutional customer deposits U.S. dollars to a transaction account.
- Ripple performs customer and wallet compliance checks and moves funds into the reserve account.
- Ripple mints RLUSD and transfers the tokens to the customer’s wallet.
Institutional redemption
- The customer sends RLUSD on-chain to Ripple’s redemption wallet.
- Ripple detects the transfer and performs compliance checks.
- Ripple burns the tokens and settles fiat to the customer’s bank account.
Retail holders generally obtain RLUSD through exchanges or preferred on-ramps, according to Ripple. Whether a retail user can sell, transfer, or redeem it depends on the provider, jurisdiction, and applicable terms. Do not assume an exchange purchase gives the buyer the same direct access to Ripple’s institutional process.
What backs RLUSD?
Ripple says RLUSD is backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars or permitted cash equivalents held in segregated reserve accounts. Its listed reserve assets include bank deposits, short-maturity U.S. Treasury bills, government money market funds, and qualifying overnight reverse repurchase agreements. These are issuer statements about the reserve design, not a guarantee against issuer, custody, operational, market, or redemption risks.

Ripple says an independent CPA provides monthly attestations concerning management’s assertions about circulating supply and reserve composition, under AICPA attestation standards. An attestation is not the same as a full financial-statement audit, and it does not eliminate the risks of relying on the issuer, custodians, or redemption arrangements. Ripple says reserve reports are published no more than 30 days after month end.

Ripple’s transparency dashboard reported $2,460.7 million in circulating RLUSD and $2,602.9 million in reserve funds as of October 8, 2026. These are dated balances and can change; they should not be treated as current indefinitely. Ripple’s product page also displays “103%” overcollateralized, but the cited page passage does not state an as-of date or calculation method. The dashboard figures imply a different ratio—about 105.8% when reserve funds are divided by circulating supply—and Ripple’s cited material does not explain how the two figures relate. See Ripple’s RLUSD product information and Ripple’s transparency page.

Which networks support RLUSD?
Ripple lists RLUSD on seven networks. On the XRP Ledger it uses the ledger’s issued-token format; on the listed EVM-compatible networks it is an ERC-20 token.
| Network | Token format |
|---|---|
| XRP Ledger (XRPL) | XRPL-issued token |
| Ethereum | ERC-20 |
| Base | ERC-20 |
| Ink | ERC-20 |
| Optimism | ERC-20 |
| Unichain | ERC-20 |
| XRPL EVM sidechain | ERC-20 |
Ripple distinguishes mainnet RLUSD, which has real-world value and reserve backing, from testnet tokens, which have no financial value and are not backed by real-world assets. Check the supported network and official token details in Ripple’s network documentation before transferring. A receiving wallet or service must support the same network and token; an address or transfer on one network should not be assumed to work on another.

Who can access or redeem RLUSD?
Availability depends on jurisdiction and provider. Ripple says direct customers are enterprise institutions subject to KYC/AML and sanctions screening; retail users typically access the token through exchanges or preferred on-ramps where it is available. A listing on one service does not establish availability elsewhere.

Ripple identifies Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC as a New York limited purpose trust company supervised by the New York Department of Financial Services. Ripple also announced on November 27, 2025, that Abu Dhabi Global Market’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority recognized RLUSD as an Accepted Fiat-Referenced Token. That recognition applies to eligible authorized persons using it in applicable regulated activities, subject to their obligations; it is not a statement of unrestricted global availability. Ripple’s product page describes availability as jurisdiction-dependent.

Wallets, custody, and transfer safety
A hosted wallet provider manages the private keys on a user’s behalf; an unhosted wallet leaves key control and protection with the user. Ripple’s wallet compatibility information lists Ledger and Trezor for RLUSD on XRPL and Ethereum, but compatibility can depend on the specific device, software, and network. Verify those details with the wallet provider and receiving service before sending funds.
- Confirm the destination supports RLUSD on the network you intend to use.
- Verify the token and destination details against the service’s official instructions; do not rely on a name or ticker alone.
- Check whether the transfer requires additional information, such as a destination tag or memo, before sending.
- Consider a small test transfer when appropriate and account for network and provider fees.
- For self-custody, secure the recovery information offline. Ripple warns that losing a private key can mean losing access to assets.
See Ripple’s wallet compatibility information and official network and token documentation. Never assume that a transfer can be reversed if the wrong network or address is used.
What to consider before using RLUSD
RLUSD may be useful to someone seeking a token designed to track the U.S. dollar and transferable on supported networks. It is still a digital asset with risks and practical constraints. Before buying or accepting it, consider:

- Price: the $1 target does not guarantee a $1 market price on every venue.
- Redemption: direct minting and redemption are described for institutional customers; retail access may depend on an exchange or on-ramp.
- Reserves and issuer: reserve backing and reporting are described by Ripple, and attestations do not remove counterparty or operational risk.
- Network: use only a chain and token format supported by both the sending and receiving services.
- Location and rules: access and permitted use vary by jurisdiction and provider.
- Custody: hosted services take on key management; self-custody places key security and recovery responsibility on the holder.
